A Great 80's Second Set

I was at this show, thought it was one of the best nights of the tour. Speakers in the hallway as I recall too

nice

I was at this show as a guest of Chuck Byrne. The Grand Son of Brendan Byrne, who the arena was named after.  My sister was renting a room to an engineer from Westinghouse, who worked with Chuck. A limo drove us to the show. We had the most luxurious  suite in the "Brendan Byrne Arena" facing the stage.

The place was rocking during the Cumberland Blues. The sound was amazing that night.

I saw a Grateful Dead show from a different perspective. Stone cold sober, with a group of geeks that had never seen Jerry Garcia before, but became huge fans afterwards.

lol

post your favorite second sets from the 80's here

Pamela Anderson

Wait...what?

lol

Actually haven't listened to that second set yet. Currently listening to the first set and liking it.

I liked the 2nd sets from that arena back in 83, the "stephen stills" shows, some great stuff...

honorable mentions, the Volcano show in 80 at Portland (Mt St Helens Rumble!),  and I liked 83 PTown too...    some good Sacramento Cal Expo 2nd sets too!

awesome second set (not including the Moan Baez set as a set)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvIhzMJwOm8

best show I ever attended

That 2nd set from the Meadowlands was pretty sweet. Pretty standard setlist for 1988, but very well played. The China>Rider, Estimated>Eyes & Other One>Wharf Rat combos cook imo.

No slouch of a first set either with a beautiful To Lay Me Down & the last version of Ballad of a Thin Man. It was good to see this released as part of the Road Trips series.

Was there as well for all three shows, I really enjoy Spring ‘88..

Mt St Helens Blows during the dead show, everything was covered in raining volcanic ash afterward;

The famous Portland Volcano Show, 6-12-80 (starts with the Mt St Helens Rumble)

Oregon Country Fair 8-28-82  (first Day Job, West LA Fadeaway, Ken Kesey introduces 2nd set)

http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1982/8/28

Boise Idaho 9-2-83  Simply off the charts, a lost gem of a gem of a show, bit of a rough start, loose and frenetic throughout, but explosive as all hell once slipknot comes around, Jerry smoking the shit out of his guitar, Phil carpet bombing, take no prisoners...  love the funk jam after eyes!  Cool jam into the old version of throwing stones (no Sampson and D type chords during the solo)

http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1983/9/2

The Stephen Stills shows at Meadowlands  (nice tight fiery Dead)

4-16-83

http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1983/4/16

4-17-83

http://relisten.net/grateful-dead/1983/4/17

Cal Expo 6-9-84  (Some brilliant interactive jams;  playin' > jam > china doll > jam > Phil + Brent jam)

I was at Manor Downs 1982 it was a really good show. The next day at OKLA City Zoo was meh. My first summer tour Ventura to Iowa City w some classic shows..

I don't like to split them up. Whole show or no go.

The next day was no ordinary day on the calender. Your expectations must have been Sky High. I remember your less than stellar review.

Roanoke in '87 was really fun. Stayed right across the street from the civic center. Both nights were rockin!

Couldn't recall Roanoke so I dialed it up. I like it when they can all just be in the current, mindlessly flowing together.

astro!!! Fine to see you.

I don't know Marcus. I thought the B'Day show was pretty good. You have to remember, the band played well past midnight in Austin, there were fireworks there, specially set-up by the promoter to celebrate Jer's birthday. The start time for the show on 8/1 said 2pm on the tickets. They wound up pushing that back a couple of hours. It was still fucking hot as hell in Oklahoma City in the late afternoon, 102 degrees. The Zoo Amphitheatre was dusty, parched and during the first set, Jerry looked like he was going to melt like the Wicked Witch of the West. By the second set he didn't melt. And we were off, back on the road to KC for that unforgettable show at the Starlight. I count seeing Jerry on his 40th birthday as a major highlight of my hardcore touring days.

This is where some of us miss Felina's participation...

We jammed the 2nd set a few times.  Never made the hit parade.

I remember all you guys saying how brutal the heat  was that day.

LMFAO.

I agree 110%. I miss his awesome commentary. The guy bleeds Grateful dead red white and blue.

Howard I  lived in Riverside the summer of 82. I could not go to those shows as i had to retake business stats that summer with Hari Salavitabar.  New Paltz was going through a summer heat wave as well.  I still remember seeing off Larry and Markus as they rove away.  I believe I got to hang out with your room mate Rebecca while you guys were on the road?  She was good company.

While Marcus & Cathy, Ethan & Jill were hitching their way across the Western to Mid-Western US and I was on a luxury tour in a brand new Toyota Corolla with Gary & Eliot, you were hanging back at Riverside taking a Stats Class mastering the Mean, Mode & Median and schtupping the babes back east?

Alpine Valley 8 7 82.  My first tape trade in the parking lot.  I was jamming my copy of the new Betty Board of the 5 8 77 show and playin hackey sack with friends in the parking lot across from the UIC Pavilion on 4-10-87 when this guy comes over with the Alpine 82 2nd set to trade for the tape playin.  I had another copy at home, so I said HELL YEAH.  I fell in love with this show.

Cap Center 9 12 87.  Jerry is locked in and ready to jam for this show.  One of the great times I had the pleasure of having in the presence of Jerry.  The Ship of Fools is one of my 2 favorite versions I heard live (Alpine Valley 88 being the other), and absolutely the best Morning Dew I ever witnessed.  I saw some other good ones, but this was the best.

Civic Arena 4-2 89.  My first of 6 in a row on this tour, and it was soooooooo much fun. Great seats, great friends, I had a new job and for the first time I was being paid an hourly wage to see the Grateful Dead.  My first ever use of Paid Vacation. I worked 2nd shift at a hospital, so from 3 to 1130 I was being paid.  It was just exactly perfect, except it was cold...and the following night there was a riot and stuff, but on THIS night, it was a raging fun bubble.  My favorite Shakedown St. I caught live.  The place was going bananas, the band was cookin, and Spring Tour '89 was off to a fantastic start.  The after Drumz of Wheel >Fantasy>Hey Jude (ouch)>Round n Round>GDTRFB>Lovelight is worth a listen as well.  I don't think they're on this video as it's only about 50 minutes long.  The Hey Jude is worth a fast forward though.

Richmond Coliseum 11 2 85.   I think I got this show in a trade as well.  Possibly Alpine Valley 88.  I had a bunch of stuff to trade, and did a lot of trading during the 5 days there.  It was a beautiful soundboard I was given, and it has some incredible playing and jamming and weirdness and beauty all up in it.  It's cool to have a video of it.  Enjoy.  I wish I was there for this.

Poplar Creek 6 28 83.  Loved the tape of this 2nd when I got it.  Still love it.  Top shelf Jerry throughout.  I saw the JGB at Poplar Creek in 89.  Orangest place I ever saw.  The Help Slip Frank is movin, but spot on.

10/8/83 Richmond. only Crazy Fingers of the year.

10/11/83 MSG Saint Stephen bust out.

10/15/83 Hartford... the second Saint Stephen of the week... opening notes out of space were huge moments of the decade.

6/24/85 Riverbend was another good second set.

MT!

Another great one I don't see mentioned much.  First set was spectacular as well, my all time favorite Lazy Lightning-> Supplication.

If memory serves me right this is the show where some naked guy ran up on stage at the beginning of the encore and ripped a bunch of wires out of Jerry's rig.  Parrish tried to patch it up but to no avail so you'll notice that Jerry's guitar is absent from the encore.

What time does the band start playing ?????

About 10pm.

All hail to set II
