Grand Funk Railroad

Forums:

They were a rockin' band back in the day.

Here's a few early vids from 70 and 71. They had pretty rabid fans.

I still have a few of their 45's from the early 70's.

"The wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner? The bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher? The competent drum work of Don Brewer? Oh, Man! "

I enjoyed their "Live" album.

Homer knows

Meh.

My first thought, elf...

the wild, shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner , the bong-rattling bass of Mel Schacher and the competent drum work of Don Brewer

On a relatively recent GDRadio show re-play, in an apparent "threat" to a boisterously unyielding crowd somewhere back in the 70's, Phil says something along the line of, "OK, if you guys don't shape up, we'll never come back here and you'll be stuck with Grand Funk Railroad!"

I wish I had the date/link but I'm pretty sure some "Phil Sleuth" out there/here just might. Trivia Friday!

aaaaaaAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH! ----Gak!----

Per capita, Michigan has produced more than its share of American rock n roll and R&B.

Were they the American band?

Those guys are an amazing story, in that they flew out of the garage to that Shea Stadium gig in just a few years, a hard-jammin' trio from the mean streets of Flint, Michigan. I liked the first couple albums... but it was over when they became the above-mentioned "American Band".

We opened up for the current Farner-less version a few years ago- the new members were pretty nice, the two original guys were dicks.

Kinda similar to the Beatles but GFR sold out much faster than the Beatles/

according to Wiki:

By 1971, Grand Funk equalled the Beatles' Shea Stadium attendance record, but sold out the venue in just 72 hours whereas the Beatles concert took a few weeks to sell out.

An added tidbit. Joe Walsh was at that Beatles show and is now married to Ringo's wife's sister.

I bought the above live album -used- out of curiosity. - After listening once or twice I traded it back.- Still my curiosity drove me to buy a 2nd row ticket to their show at the Oakland Col Arena in 1971.- Surrounded by peach fuzz 14 year olds........ all I remember was the drummer banging his head on the snare during his big "drum solo".- Otherwise a major noise fest. - Finito.

^I liked those 2 youtube shows I posted above. High energy rock from Michigan. I dug it. It seems like they were the precursor to Nugent, Jim Dandy and David Lee Roth.

Butthole Surfers.....my roommates from Southern California when I was at Humboldt State were into them.

They also made bumper stickers that said

Archie Bunker Is A Great Man

with a picture of Archie with a cigar in his mouth....

One of them had what I called a "Rambo truck", a huge late-'70's Dodge that he got suck on the beach one night when

the high tide came in.

Bummer.

I enjoyed Grand Funk. I was in college in Cincinnati & they played there all the time, as did MC5, Alice Cooper, Iggy, & Allmans etc.

I saw Grand Funk at least 12 times. It was a good energy crowd with lots of young girls,

I liked them when I was younger. Still can listen to the red album on occasion.
Mark Farner is a genuine nice guy. Don Brewer is a dick. Mel S. is the quiet one.
