So, the Utah house members have introduced HR 4558, which would turn the new "Esclante Canyon" monument into a National Park, which would be utterly TRAGIC. There is already Zion, Bryce, Arches, etc with lots of development and traffic and flush toilets and parking lots. The beauty of this area is that it is still wild. In addition, they want to transfer Hole In the Rock Road, one of the main access roads, to the state. The people in the surrounding communities don't want this, they don't want to become another national park Disneyland. And god only knows what Utah would do if they had that precious artery that is Hole In The Rock.
When the National Monument was created, a land swap was done to compensate Utah for state inholdings, and they got valuable resource-rich land outside the monument boundaries that they have been able to use to make money. They don't have any "right" to Hole in the Rock and that should remain federal BLM land.
Please please tell anyone you can think of to oppose this. I have been recreating in this area since the 80's and it would be terrible if it became another zion or arches. America needs its wild lands, lands you can get lost in, lands that tantalize with things you may never see. Please save Escalante.
