Glacier N.P. anyone?

Forums:

Anyone done any backcountry stuff up in Glacier? Thinking of heading up there later in August. AllTrails shows dozens to choose from.

Make sure you get an entry ticket or permit this year- as well as the entry fee. I got shut out in June when I went up there. They said I could have come back after 5 pm but I was booked elsewhere.

Some days you get the bear, and some today's the bear gets you.  Don't be the bear meat, Ned.  Enjoy Glacier, it's heavenly.  Wonder what they'll call it once all the glaciers melt?

Stayed here once for a couple days when my train got delayed in a December blizzard.

that's all I got

Current estimate is gone by 2030.

If I live I will be around Lesh's age.

No backcountry experience, but I did see grizzlies in the campgrounds. Bring bear spray for sure and make a lot of noise.

We have a couple of bear canisters, spray and bells. Trust me, I don't like the idea of being eaten alive LOL.

they won't eat you alive - they'll just rip your lungs out Jim.  It's a beautiful place - I'll be heading back.

My understanding is that grizzlies aren't that picky, Ned. They'll eat carrion too ;-)

It's very rugged land and vast wilderness. Keep your head and take the bear warnings very seriously. Stay safe & have fun.

Just keep a clean camp with all your food and dishes in a bear box or container or bear line away from your camp.  Bear attacks are rare but do happen.  .357 might be better than bear spray but hopefully it would never come down to that and you and the bears can keep a respectful distance.

If your are up in that neck of the woods, be sure to spend some time in Bigfork and Missoula.   Just beware of the Missoula Vortex.   Many a traveler stopped there "just for the night" and then woke up three years later on somebody's couch wondering what happened.

Upon further research, there's a fire in the west part of the park. No bueno.

We've had such a wet summer it would be a shame to head into a fire zone. As a result, we will be heading to the Weimenuche Wilderness south of Gunnison for a loop around Mt. Uncompahgre and Wetterhorn. Thanks for the info and hope to get up there next summer.

I imagine a bunch of firecrackers might send them for the hills.

>>>.357 might be better

I remember reading about the Lewis and Clark expedition and how surprised they were that it would take several musket shots to take down the grizzles the first time they encountered them. Reloading a musket while a grizzle is coming for you takes balls of steal.
