My west coast ventures were just beginning so this is the single NYE show I was able to attend. There wasn't much in the pomp and circumstance category and perhaps a touch of somber gloom exhibited by the more experienced NYE veterans. That being said if you can ignore the missing elephant in the room and view this show in singular fashion, it's a damn fine performance by the Grateful Dead, particularly from Black Throated onward...

I. Hell In A Bucket, Candyman, Beat It On Down The Line, It Must Have Been The Roses, Black Throated Wind, West L.A. Fadeaway, When I Paint My Masterpiece, Help On The Way-> Slipknot!-> Franklin's Tower

II. Not Fade Away*-> Eyes Of The World-> Estimated Prophet-> Drums-> Jam-> The Other One-> Wharf Rat-> Sugar Magnolia

Remember the mini movie of past New Years they played on a screen behind the band?

I pulled out a killer FOB of the night before ....12-30-91. - I thought that was a better show. - The Dec 28th show was excellent also- I ran my D5 and Naks that night down by the board. - Really good times.

the 28th was my favorite of that run.  the mind bending madness in that building during the Playin'>Same Thing was unearthly.

forgot Mickey brought the bones back for this run

That gloom permeated the entire event, front of stage & back stage. Bill Graham having died just two months earlier it all just felt wrong, and everyone knew that would be the last NYE show.

I always thought that they should have continued to do the show every year as a direct tribute to Graham.

But nobody listens to me.

This was my only NYE show, too.

I saw the preceding ones of the run (complete with the Pineapple Guys assistance).

Missed most of Bela and The Flecktones while picking up my girlfriend (now wife of 25+ years) at the airport.

Still missing Bill (and Jerry).

We raged the first three nights in our regular seats then partied in the city after. But 2 of us had no New Years tickets. So everyone with tickets left for the show as we decided if we wanted to head to the lot ticketless.

Another friend had come up from L.A. just for New Years Her dad worked at the Hollywood Bowl and through the Union she got a mega backstage pass. She could even walk on stage with her pass. Except when the band was playing. We sent her in early with clear instructions to save our regular seats that were in the Phil Zone.

Back at the apartment my friend of means makes a call. 20 minutes later he had 2 New Years tickets delivered to where we were at in Noe Valley

So we BART over to the show. Took a while to get in so lights were down when we entered the packed arena.

We walk down the stairs to our regular seats and our other friends are there but not my friend with the passes. On a hunch we walk further down towards the general admission floor.

My friend ended up saving us the first 4 "seats" just off the floor right at Phil's feet. Jerry looking over at us all night.

Thanks Jules

Remember there was a big tall security guy that worked for the arena. He had a badge and seemed to be at every show I saw in the arena.

He never smiled with all the mayhem he witnessed.

But on this night Olutunji brought on stage some traditional African women dancers to accompany him. They had to walk up side steps to get there .

Well, the security guard gave the crook of his arm and escorted  each and every lady on and then again off the stage

With the biggest smile on his face!

Blackrock, thanks for the stories. Great stuff.

These are the three NYE shows I made it to. (I went in 1986 to the first three shows, but got shut out of NYE).

At the 1991 show I was on the rail between Phil and Weir; my friend gave me the spot (I had been "second rail", good enough), but my

buddy said "it's yours, but if they go into Comes A Time, I'm coming up." Too funny.

My first New Years show in '89 was also the first time I (finally) saw Dark Star.

Quite the nights, thanks for helping bring up the memories!!
