Inside the Long Strange Trip to Make (Legal) Jerry Garcia-Branded Weed

"...This is no ordinary group of Deadheads. The man with the beard is Jerry’s nephew, Reuben Garcia, a weed grower himself. The gray-haired woman, who bears a striking resemblance to Jerry, is his 45-year-old daughter, Trixie. And this is no ordinary late-night, East Bay, marijuana mind game. Trixie and her reclusive family are coming out of the shadows to make a Jerry Garcia cannabis collection arriving November 20th.

...The Garcias’ roots with pot run deep. In 1972 while Jerry was on the road, M.G. was living in their home on Stinson Beach near San Francisco, raising the girls and quietly becoming one of the pioneering growers of the wild west days. “We stayed below the radar as much as possible,” she says with a laugh. It started after a pilot who worked with the family gave M.G. four seeds from Thailand.

...It’s a wintry January morning in suburban Maryland, with shoppers milling around a bland, highway strip-mall. Inside a sprawling warehouse with jet-black windows, thousands of sweetly pungent pot plants glisten. This is the grow site for Holistic Industries, one of the largest, multi-state cannabis operators in the country. Their role is to spearhead the Jerry Garcia cannabis brand—from coming up with the strains, to growing, packaging, and distributing the product in a variety of forms. After five years of searching, the Garcias chose them because they understand both the legacy and challenges of the cause. “I've certainly done my bit of research,” Trixie says, “I’ve met a lot of growers, and smoked a lot of weed.”

Having sampled most of the Maryland strains, the only thing "bad" is the extensive packaging (which is really nice) and rather heavy glass jar it comes in (you can only have so many of these recycled into spice jars in your kitchen).

Oh and the price. You'd better be using your points.

It's been out a few years now. Never seen any in Maine, but most dispensaries around us are smaller independents, not boutiquey.
I have seen an empty jar. Heavy glass.

does anyone have any real info on what garcia's cannabis use was actually like? im sure he smoked plenty of the stuff, but it seems to me there is a huge cultural perception of garcia as associated with cannabis, but from what ive read about him and heard him say, it seems like that association isnt as strong as some make it out to be. i cant ever recall hearing and interview where he talks about his cannabis use in any meaningful way, and i honestly cant think of much thats concrete besides pictures of him smoking a few joints floating around. obviously as the leader of the GD he had a MASSIVE indirect influence on cannabis culture, but i dont really think of garcia as a major cannabis figure. however i do think of mountian girl that way. doubt she's getting any of the $$$ from this venture.

personally id rather buy cannabis thats branded by the farm that grew the material than this type of celebrity white label trash.

slacker says mickey's got the stickier nugs.

Among other I'm sure, I know for a fact he purchased (actually his manager purchased) lots of really good week from Redway on a regular basis from 85 -95.

basically what daylight said

From a 1972 Rolling Stone interview with Charles Reich:

Reich: I have a question right off one of the evening talk shows, and that is, "Dr. Garcia, how do you stay so high?"

Garcia: I smoke a lot of dope.

Reich: Do you think that's . . .

Garcia:: Would you like some?

Reich: Do you think that that's it?

Garcia: Well, in reality I don't really stay that high, although I get high a lot, smoking a lot of pot, is what I'm trying to say. That's what it comes down to, but that doesn't necessarily mean that I'm high.
