Furthur Love

Forums:

Yesterday I decided to listen to Furthur - something I rarely do - so I pulled out 9-24-11 from the dusty back folders of my computer. This was the rain show from Cuthbert. And it was excellent!

Not the GD, but it did have a few glitches and boring parts, just like the real thing. Bobby is in fine voice, Phil is his usual bad self, and JK steps up - doesn't sound like he's reined in at all.

Check it out.

That was a great show!  I'll have to give it another listen.  I remember the Mountain Song being one of my favorites.  The Terrapin>St. Stephen was epic too.  The rain stopped on the first note of St. Stephen.

At the time all people around here did was bitch about how much they hated furthur...

but id rather have them around right now than deadco.

I liked Furthur.

Saw some good ones, saw some just OK ones.

Walked out of my fair share of Furthur shows but this show is one of my all time favorite dead music shows

I would take 2011 Furthur Music, Dead Co lead guitar mix levels, and Dead Co audience.

Furthur was a fun band and 2011 was a strong year. Had an awesome time at Radio City. Some clunkers of course, and too many times when the Bobby Brakes killed a good jam, but it was definitely Grateful Dead music at a high level.

I've never seen a single post from someone saying they enjoy Dead Co more than Furthur.

I loved some of the early Furthur shows.  2010/2011 with Furthur was possibly the most fun I had with Dead music since Phil was killing it between 99-05.  Will give this a spin later.

I think we went to all of the Cuthbert shows, but that was the one that was special. Perhaps the columns of stage lights coloring the rain above the audience was the clincher. That was magical.

I never bitched about them and enjoyed every show I saw (probably about 15).  There was even the occasional sublime moment.  And they gave us Joe Russo.

I'd go see them again in a second, and I will never pay money to see Dead$Co

One of the best post '95 shows I've seen.....

07/11/10 (Sun)  Mann Music Center - Philadelphia, PA

Set 1: Feels Like A Stranger > Shakedown Street, Alligator, Money For Gasoline, Magnolia Mountain, Lost Sailor > Saint of Circumstance, In The Midnight Hour

Set 2: Mountains of the Moon > St. Stephen > Blues for Allah > Terrapin Transit > At A Siding > Terrapin Flyer > Terrapin Refrain, Let It Grow, Morning Dew, Unbroken Chain > The Wheel > Not Fade Away, E: Brokedown Palace

I fucking loved Furthur with JK. Hit the first shows in NYC at the nokia I think. There were some absolute gems the 2 msg shows stand out second night was with an insane eyes a sweet cumberland in there somewhere too, Stroudsburg (good old sweatbox) and so many others had a great time and with JK I swear Phil looked and played like he was 20 years younger. Did skip one after Buffalo and RAGED a DMB show at Canadagiua made more cash than most of that summer Furthur tour hehehe. I would give anything to see that lineup again.

Some fun ones from Sweetwater on youtube as well!!

sorry they sucked.

got a slice of pizza during a viola...

furthur

smh

I enjoyed further when I seen them the hand full of times, even did a small souther run of 5 shows, but if I'm listening to this music, I'm going back to the source. I may of listened to some plf or ratdog shows I attended once or twice, but again I go ba c k to something with jerry playing on it, I'm just weird like that

Mr Phil Lesh and Mr Joe Russo. Worth the price of admission alone.

Sure, when Bobby started to become unstable, the shows decreased in quality pretty rapidly. Sad the way it ended. I haven't attended a show featuring Bob Weir since the Cap fiasco. It was a fitting goodbye.

Saw a lot of stellar and sometimes more than stellar shows on both coasts. The opening Fox run, BGCC New Years 2009, Shoreline (1st night), Radio City run (Owsley show). Others.

Loved them from 2009 - 2011.  After that they became, tired, boring, and formulaic.  Definitely had their moments.

I think the epic Eugene rain show was 9/17/2010.

The "inspiration, move me brightly" line in terrapin had some good X factor. This show was great.

the rain show was killer. one of the best

I was at all Furthur Cuthbert shows, and at this point they kinda blend together. I think it rained in 2011 as well.

Anyway, the one I listened to and linked is a hot show, rain or shine.

Last time I saw the Furthur was Red Rocks with Branford.

I think that's the last time I saw Phil live.

I've made my peace with that.

Here is one of the reviews of this show from archive.org.... (talking about a zoner???)

>>>i had a wonderful time at this show. even more so than the night before. but, one thing that i didn't like was during scarlet begonias, this man was masturbating. i thought it was pretty disgusting and distracting to say the least. other than that weirdo, the show was nothing but magical.

can confirm, was hilarious

my friend brought his young daughters, i think at the time they were 12 and 14ish, that was probably their favorite part of the whole show, they could not stop laughing. security drug him up the lawn by his arms, still erect and trying to touch himself

def not the only time i have seen someone openly jerking it at a dead show tho

lsd is one hell of a drug.....

my favorite furthur show was i believe night 1 of the tower run they did in 2010 or something, like 5 nights total.

god damn, i miss seeing phil play.

I've never seen a single post from someone saying they enjoy Dead Co more than Furthur.)))))))

I enjoy Dead & Co much more than Furthur...There you go Timmy

My favorite Furthur shows were The Greek 2013 I thought they were really good then they played LA & Mexico and packed it in.

Echo Thom2 quote "and they gave us Joe Russo"

Well rehearsed band who, certainly in those early years, had a ball with creating imaginative set lists. Having backup singers was worth whatever pennies they paid those two.

Chimenti and Russo!

Hoping that JK was smart and banked a bunch of whatever his take was. He was in a tough spot and thought he played as well as I expected. Hell, I loved JG playing, why would I not love JK channeling him? Who's truly doing something different that's worth it? Southern deal with Warren? Liking Mayer and truly inspired by his dedication to the music and scene, but realistically, he's not breaking any new ground especially on the unique sound songs like Estimated, Fire, etc. Although, must say his work in the acoustic Dark Star at Fenway was great. Again, ALL good.

Russo was a monster throughout. His Terrapins were off the charts. Not much in the way of "loping" drum playing.

Furthur also helped bring my piece of the "community" back together and out on the road. Forever grateful for that.

>>>>>"and they gave us Joe Russo"

He wasn't some unknown drummer before Furthur.

Velveeta  Cheese Nothing More

>>> He wasn't some unknown drummer before Furthur.

He didn't know much about the Dead though. Phil and Bob brought him into the scene, and he's made it his own with JRAD, which I think we're all grateful for.
