Furious E's Mike Keneally CA Tour $ back guarantee!

Forums:

Alright, ya schmucks, one of the most advanced musical minds of today has some tour dates on the west coast including locations north of Los Angeles for the first time in a couple years.

I'm very disappointed to have scheduling conflicts that will prevent me from attending any of these, for this lineup of beer for dolphins is the classic Mike Keneally Quartet ensemble featuring 80's Berklee school of music performance graduate all stars including long time Keneally collaborators, guitarist Rick Musallam, Current Zappa vaultmiester and former ZPZ/Z/Duran Duran drummer: Joe Travers and heavy prog rock bassist executioner, Bryan Beller of The aristocrats/Steve Vai/Joe Satriani/ and Dethklok.

All these shows should be under $30 and will b blistering if u have any taste for early 90's flavored, fairly heavy, very progressive rock.

If that sounds even remotely appealing to u in a small, intimate, live context this is the Geek music u r looking for.

If you have a viva handle I recognize, stay for the entire show and post a brief but thorough review I will reimburse for whatever u feel Mike's, as FZ said, "particular splendor" was not worth to u, up to and including your entire ticket price

Obviously this compensation will only include ticket face price and not any additional expenditures you may incur such as: food & drink, transportation, parking, lodging, guests, therapy from having visions that turn your world upside-down, tear asunder your illusions and the bring sanctuary of your own ignorance crashing down around you, etc.

Any questions?

>>>a brief but thorough review<<<

No can do.

No worries, lance.

Overly thorough and verbose reviews will still qualify for partial or full refunds and b much appreciated!

Nice offer, E. Wish I could check them out.
Anyone remember on the old Zone when I offered to reimburse anyone who went to see Jackie Greene during his first tour? I said if you went to see him and didn't like his show, I'd reimburse any cover/ticket charge. Lots of pholks went, but no one asked me for their $$ back. Of course, that was a couple of years before Phil decided to take him under his wing and some Zoners apparently found it difficult to accept him in that project. smiley

 Good shit, Bill.

i forgot about that.

i guess I'm making this a sort of zone tradition then.

And nice find, robo

Nice gesture, E. I did the same for Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band on the old Zone and never had a taker.

It's the gesture that counts, Tony.

I'd love to see springsteen and E street with ya one day

i am going to try and hit the sf one, and im such a nice guy i wont even ask for a refund if i dont like it.

i know, what a guy i am. simply a stunning human being. i will give you all a few moments to just soak this all in.

Hats off to ya, Daylight.

U is on fire this evening

listening to a bit on the ol youtube and enjoying it.

what is the history of lineups with this group? does the lineup rotate often? or is this lineup a longtime formation with hundreds of shows under their belt?

Well, Beer for Dolphins has been around since the early 90's.

It has gone through a few configurations of different drummers, bassists, keyboardists and I think even a small  horn section for one tour.

By 2005 it had pretty much settled on the same quartet doing the current tour and started being billed as The Mike Keneally Band.

People really loved the Beer for Dolphins moniker though so just within the last couple years Mike's started using again, pretty much only as a power trio but it looks like Musallam was available for this tour.

Mike's had all kinds of other side stuff going on, live and studio, in the meantime.

Try checking out http://www.radiokeneally.com/ sometime, u can even locate and request obscure old live cuts from the archive

i'm not a prog guy....

thanks E! this band sounds really solid. i am hearing alot of what i like about the instrumentation of the GD and "jambands", but at the same time they dont seem GD influenced or like a "jamband" at all...much more serious, heavier, much more complex song structure. im hearing some great runs and interplay while the verses are being sung that would take most "jambands" the better part of a 6 or 7 minute instrumental jam to build up to. getting right to the heart of the matter, no noodles. cant wait to check it out.

turts, the songs themselves do not sound very "prog" to me, its more the instrumentation...heavy, sometimes dark, complex, lots of difficult key and timing changes...worth a listen. not the mystical yes or gensis sound...much more down to earth, real rock band sound. but idk ive only played thru a few songs so far

I think of Mike as the Buddha of prog.

it's certainly not for everybody but if you're at all appreciative of stuff like Zappa, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, Yes, latter day umphrey's mcgee, phish, ween, moe., planet X, Dream theater or any of those G3 type wankers: Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen, etc. u owe it to yourself to experience a Mike Keneally project in a live setting.

There really is nothing quite like it

>>>much more down to earth, real rock band sound. but idk ive only played thru a few songs so far

No, no, you're really getting it!

and after spamming Mike on the zone for years I'm excited to really b getting through to somebody.

This isn't the cape and dragons type prog.

Mike could write a song about checking the mailbox that would make your toes curl.

and yes, there's this heavy element of 90's, almost grunge, rock anchoring a lot of the material.

I can't recommend the official live Keneally releases enough, but u really gotta see it for yourself in person.

for people who love diverse, experimental, intricate live music u will not believe what these guy do in rooms of only a couple hundred people capacity for $20.

Mike keneally will rip your head off!

Will / do they ever tour east?

yep, tiny northeast tours mostly, usually once or twice a year.

Just did one a couple months ago in fact.

I didn't start a thread about it cause the thread I made for the northeast tour they did right before the philzone shut down got so little attention.

That one was special too, if for no other reason than they got as far south as N. Carolina which is very rare.

U gotta understand, Mike make's virtually no profit on these tours.

I don't think I've ever seen him with an audience of over 100 people, usually closer to 50, and these have been in areas where's he's better known.

He's even come out of pocket a few go rounds.

They're labors of love.

He makes most of his money playing keys and back up guitar for Joe Satriani these days.

That and by releasing an album mostly constructed solely by himself and a couple friends using protools once a year, or every other year, for his small legions of prog nerd fans.

These live shows r strictly for the love of the art, it's part of what makes them so special.

If you don't take advantage of seeing them when u can, you're really missing out.

A Wednesday night.

Sheesh.

In a little minor league blues club?

An hour+ away?

We'll see.

BTW, what kind of sleaze asks for his money back on an offer like this?

Maybe gas money.

We'll see.

I know, the middle of the week thing is brutal.

I want to hit that Thurs. Napa show so bad but between my wife's birthday on Weds, my work sched. and The Meters at the Fillmore on Saturday, it's probably not gonna happen.

I almost even bailed on the Meters for it, it's a 1/5th of the price too, but had to remind myself this will probably b my only time seeing the full original Meters lineup.

Still, I've never seen Keneally booked in Napa before and the effort that would save me from having to go into the city or, even more rarely, out to Humboldt where he usually plays combined with the fact that it will probably b another couple years before he's up here again makes missing this one sting.

I take some solace that I finally got to see him at the Baked Potato last year while down south visiting family.

That venue has really become his home base over the years and gets the best he has to offer, they're probably crushing it there right now!

baked potato has some killer shows ive been super jelly of that spot for years now

It's become quite the hub for that whole keneally scene: Rick Musallum, Jamie Kime, Pete Griffin, Brendon Small, Joe Travers, Ben Thomas, etc. are all featured in various projects that regularly perform there.

Seems to b a fairly trodden path of prog nerd performance majors graduating from Berklee, getting hired by dweezil, quitting or getting fired and winding up kickin it w/keneally at the potato.

So you're telling me I'm supposed to drive all the way up to SF on a Wednesday night, fight my way to a little dive club in the middle of downtown and check this guy out??

Game-time decision.

I'm saying u probably wouldn't regret that decision as unappealing a hassle as it seems.

U could also go on a relaxing drive all the way up to Napa on Thursday and saunter your way into a middle of the road wine bar to check this guy out, which is what I would absolutely be doing if I hadn't committed to the Meters at the fillmore on Sat, a decision I'm still a little torn about and I love's me some original meters!

But I get it, whole reason I started this thread is cause I wussed out.

However, if it's at all a feasible option I'm of the opinion it's usually always best to go to the show!

i don't drink sour beers either

I haven't really jumped on this whole sour craze either, turtle.

u should still probably get your head ripped off at the potato sometime though.

Here's but a wee taste of MK and Beer for Dolphins from last nights' Early Show at Biscuits and Blues in San Francisco.

If anyone can help with the name of this tune I'll edit the Youtube metadata to make it correct, please and thanks!

Regrettably, (to me) their was a sizable crowd assembled for the late show, and the venue didn't go with it's usual policy of allowing drinking patrons who attended the early show to stay for the later one so I bailed.  I did however get to chat with Scott Thunes (of the 80's Era FZ band) which was fun!

I thought this band was powerful but much like my recent experience w Crimson at the Fox - was more about sheer virtuosity then giving an audience a sense of feeling about the material.

Also - Keneally's guitar rig crapped out on him toward the end of the set.  He still sounded good but this was not easy to digest, blues based music.... (YMMV)

Heavily dug the bassist and drummer - seriously chops heavy - heavy hitters!

The name of the song in the first video is 'roots twist'.

sucks about the rig failing and the venue trying to make folks pay for the second set; That's not how Mike likes to typically do bizness.

goldstar $13 late show for me.(no refund demanded lol)

a lot of talent on that stage. There were quite a few 20-30 second windows where the talent coalesced to be music that moved me and made sense

but perhaps too much "was more about sheer virtuosity then giving an audience a sense of feeling about the material"

joe satriani came to my mind frequently, along with doses of Zappa!.

Travis Larson was solid as opener Mike Keneally was at times brilliant

The drummer: Joe Travers  was the star - super solid and tasty - and most consistent

I think Scott Thunes sat in for one tune on bass - very tasty and down! ( whoever he was he was solid, and was the reg bass player)

GTTS

That's rad thunes showed up!

(((88' fz band)))

Totally concur about the drummer - he kicked ass.   Mad and emphatic sense of where the 1 beat was in every tune.

Mercury was in retrograde for me - I brought the wrong HD Card for my cam (2 Gigs instead of my usual 32 or 64 so I got only a few songs on vid.)

Thanks for the song title!

Real special tour, glad some of y'all checked it out.

I know the compositions r over the top dense; at times almost as challenging to process, digest, and appreciate as a listener as they are to perform as a musician.

Thunes showing up to jam a little Zappa with Mike in SF is super cool, no idea when those guys last performed together.

Napa was a great show, they were playing it real loose which is rare for Keneally, even throwin in a couple brief meters jams ;)

His songs are so structured I love to see him stretching them out, re-working and adding to them.

There were some bust outs this tour he hadn't done for a while and as a long time fan I was very satisfied, real cool rendition of Inca roads too.

The input jack on his trademark green strat was acting up so he was unable to use it for the second half of the show which took a little bite away tonally when it would have been welcome, but other than that I had no complaints.

Travis Larson band was very skilled but didn't do much for me, my favorite part of their set is when Larson declared Keneally as the true torch bearer of the Zappa Legacy.

Amen, travis!

Music is the best, get some on ya!
