We're told that being vaccinated protects us from the worst illness (including lessening the burden on the hospital and people who work there) and death.
I'm not protected from acquiring the virus. As I have underlying disease that could make me much sicker and have long-lasting effects, working to avoid it makes sense.
I think if everyone were vaccinated and the spread were reduced to the smallest number, it's possible it could be wiped out or nearly so. Not Corona virus, but Covid-19 and it's mutants. Think polio, small pox, etc.
Thank you for answering my question about your vaccination status.
I can care about them and be pissed off at their choice.
I care greatly for my step-daughter, age 48, who is unvaccinated. She's historically a very healthy woman, but didn't think she should get vaccinated. She got Covid-19 and was sick for a few weeks. She felt better and then went for a hike or walk, and found that her lungs were not fully functional. At this point, a month after that hike, she has no stamina, can't talk for more than a few minutes, is very limited in what she can do. I'm pissed off that she isn't vaccinated and love and care for her anyway. You can understand that, right.
I understand that, but we have the liberty to make choices. Sometimes we make good ones, sometimes not. Who am I to tell someone what to do, especially about their body? I can only care for my body thru choices of my own.
I understand your thoughts and statements, Racket, but I wonder, how do you feel about "childhood" immunizations being required for school entry, even some required for college entry, etc. Or those for travel (travel may be required for jobs), etc. It gets complicated, especially when very young kids are being given substances that obviously (and I say that knowing that maybe it isn't obvious to someone) keep them from spreading lethal diseases to others. It's just complicated.
All current vaccines required for schools in California are human disease, with no animal reservoirs. It has taken 40+ years to minimize the endemics caused by these diseases. Measles, mumps, polio, chicken pox, pertussis, etc....
As far as travel, that's a personal choice. Although yellow fever and rabies have animal reservoirs, typhoid, meningitis, and malaria do not. They are human disease.
It is very complicated and I don't need the government making complicated decisions for me.
I have never heard the term "animal reservoir" before. I just read a little but am left with the question, Why does it matter? I don't know enough to understand it.
Sars - Covid 1 was discovered in 2002, and they've been working on a vaccine ever since. (The research didn't just start last year)
If Trump had made it public when he did that Feb 2020 interview, we should have been able to do a national lockdown and starved this thing out, and if he coordinated with other nations, could have have really trainwrecked this virus's spread (If Hillary was president, we wouldn't be here, then again, the Republinuts would likely have impeached her). For one thing, Mardi Gras would have been canceled, which would have saved the lives of many a legend!
Once again, republicans show a total incompetence in all things science, by promoting the virus was a myth, by promoting anti vaccerism, and anti mask beliefs, etc...
They should sue all those leaders involved with civil suits tied to the death / murder of hundreds of thousands of Americans, due to their BS propaganda!
Thank you for that information, Racket. There have been corona viruses for hundreds/thousands of years depending on where one gets information, so it would be unrealistic to think they'd disappear in our lifetimes.
I'll read that Nature article, and Racket, please read the Atlantic article linked at 11:57 p.m. While long, it's good. I appreciate that we are sharing information that has meaning and will inform how we go forward.
>the others are presumably protected via vaccine or have turned down the vaccine and accepted the risk with not getting it, no? Complicated indeed<
You criticize the critical thinking of older folks on here, because of years of exposure to propaganda, but you seem unable to grasp the relatively simple concept of herd immunity.
BTW, I'd love to hear about the class struggles and discrimination you have experienced as a straight white male, Jay. ( this is regarding a past post in another thread)
^it may well be impossible, given vaccination rates around the world, the transient nature of our economy and society, and the frequency which the virus mutates. But it is clear that areas with higher vaccination rates have lower rates of disease. So, IMO, unless there is a serious medical risk involved with vaccinating, those choosing not to vaccinate are selfish, ignorant, or both.
Jay, regarding my comments on class... There is truth in your statement regarding those in power using a variety of issues to divide the rest of us, but instead of dismissing the real bigotry and discrimination that people experience based on their race, gender, sexual orientation, etc., you should acknowledge it. And if you truly believe that folks must unite in order to achieve real progress, then you should unite in their struggle to be treated equally as shitty as a poor, straight, white guy.
With all due respect,I won't take the bait and engage you on your request. As I'm a white male, nothing I could say would change the fact that I'm white and male and - by nature- am not allowed to have a nuanced opinion on delicate matters in current events.
<< others are presumably protected via vaccine or have turned down the vaccine and accepted the risk with not getting it, no? Complicated indeed.
You are correct sir. Maybe they have medical reasons for not getting vaxed. Just as long as the decision to ignore scientists recommendations was theirs alone, and not some republikan politician's coercion. That would be the absolute worst form of ignorance.
>>>With all due respect,I won't take the bait and engage you on your request.<<<
:engages:
>>>As I'm a white male, nothing I could say would change the fact that I'm white and male and - by nature- am not allowed to have a nuanced opinion on delicate matters in current events.<<<
this is actually white fragility right here in a nutshell. Like, all of it rolled up.
>As I'm a white male, nothing I could say would change the fact that I'm white and male and - by nature- am not allowed to have a nuanced opinion on delicate matters in current events<
What a cowardly, bullshit, cop-out. I'm a straight, white male, and I realize that others experience discrimination and bigotry that I'll never need to worry about. Not baiting you, but you sure showed me who you are... you're the victim because you're not allowed to have a nuanced opinion. Oh boy, that's some arrogant bullshit.
I had a relative send me a chart on time from discovery of the virus to a vaccine, and since this was only six months, she doesn't think it's been tested enough.
I asked her if they should've waited longer for more people to die and keep the country locked up. I also asked if she vaccinated her children while growing up.
I guess 160 million shots given with few side effects isn't enough, and risking COVID is better. I wish the insurance companies would deny coverage to hospitalized anti-vaxxers.
The whole, to vax or not to vax, all boils down to trump influence, that mutherfucking lying mutherfucker. The great majority of non-vaxers are republikan supporters. Wait, actually it's putin's influence that's caused all this shit since his bot actions on our mass media platforms like Twitter and Facebook allowed trump to get elected in the 1st place. putins laughing with delight while our country further implodes, dividing and fighting itself,, for a while iver BLM, but at the moment over this fucking covid plague. Now it's even trickled down into the zone, WTF.
Wasn't "flattening the curve" meant to alleviate all the pressure on the medical system? There are a few dozen ICU beds left in all of Texas, and Louisiana is begging for one of those Navy hospital ships. Four teaching staff in Broward County died in 2 days, 3 confirmed unvaccinated and the other suspected, and the fucking governor has banned masks in schools.
It seems to me that this isn't quite about "personal freedoms." We live in a society, and sometimes we have to do things for the greater good. Either get vaccinated or wear a mask. If not for one's self, for all those kids who are being hospitalized.
Save the "personal freedom" argument for guns, abortion and helmet laws. It doesn't hold water in a public health crisis.
I agree bk lots of people got their freedoms and their privileges all twisted up about this.
Folks actually dying in the hallways now in the town I live outside of, and the one down the road a piece as well.
Beds overfull, and our county (Josephine) in conjunction with the hospitals and the next county commission (Jackson) over, yesterday requested for the national guard to come and set up a field hospital. So that seems fun.
As I'm a white male, nothing I could say would change the fact that I'm white and male and - by nature- am not allowed to have a nuanced opinion on delicate matters in current events.<<
Absolutely correct, Bss. People don't know the difference between right and privilege, and somewhere along the line they forgot that there are responsibilities that come with both.
Does anyone have any question about our being responsible for sharing with our friends, families, communities as much help and safety as we can provide each other? What else are we here for? I hold you in my heart and hands.
MyPillow chief executive Mike Lindell says he was attacked in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on Wednesday night.
Lindell told attendees Thursday morning at an election fraud symposium that he’s hosting in the city that he was attacked at his hotel, the Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported. Lindell said he was in pain and he wants everyone to know about the evil in the world. He didn’t go into details about the incident.
A medical procedure most definitely should be a personal choice. If that choice causes you to die, that's on you. Vaccine hesitancy is world wide and is not an American political phenomenon.
it is becoming more and more apparent that vaccination is not going to slow down this corona virus. For reasons stated above it's not a surprise. It's time to attack the world wide pandemic differently.
>>It's time to attack the world wide pandemic differently.
Ivermectin seems very promising- super fascinating results with the countries who have rolled it out in mass. I think the solution is a combination of the vaccines and other therapeutic meds such as Ivermectin. Also taking measures to better your overall physical health & wellness through diet, exercise, vitamin D and sound personal hygiene.
FDA has not approved ivermectin for use in treating or preventing COVID-19 in humans. Ivermectin tablets are approved at very specific doses for some parasitic worms, and there are topical (on the skin) formulations for head lice and skin conditions like rosacea. Ivermectin is not an anti-viral (a drug for treating viruses).
Taking large doses of this drug is dangerous and can cause serious harm.
If you have a prescription for ivermectin for an FDA-approved use, get it from a legitimate source and take it exactly as prescribed.
Never use medications intended for animals on yourself. Ivermectin preparations for animals are very different from those approved for humans.
Throughout the pandemic, the anti-parasite drug ivermectin has attracted much attention, particularly in Latin America, as a potential way to treat COVID-19. But scientists say that recent, shocking revelations of widespread flaws in the data of a preprint study reporting that the medication greatly reduces COVID-19 deaths dampens ivermectin’s promise — and highlights the challenges of investigating drug efficacy during a pandemic.
“I was shocked, as everyone in the scientific community probably were,” says Eduardo López-Medina, a paediatrician at the Centre for the Study of Paediatric Infections in Cali, Colombia, who was not involved with the study and who has investigated whether ivermectin can improve COVID-19 symptoms. “It was one of the first papers that led everyone to get into the idea ivermectin worked” in a clinical-trial setting, he adds.
The paper summarized the results of a clinical trial seeming to show that ivermectin can reduce COVID-19 death rates by more than 90%1 — among the largest studies of the drug’s ability to treat COVID-19 to date. But on 14 July, after internet sleuths raised concerns about plagiarism and data manipulation, the preprint server Research Square withdrew the paper because of “ethical concerns”.
Ahmed Elgazzar at Benha University in Egypt, who is one of the authors on the paper, told Nature he was not given a chance to defend his work before it was removed.
...
The paper’s irregularities came to light when Jack Lawrence, a master’s student at the University of London, was reading it for a class assignment and noticed that some phrases were identical to those in other published work. When he contacted researchers who specialize in detecting fraud in scientific publications, the group found other causes for concern, including dozens of patient records that seemed to be duplicates, inconsistencies between the raw data and the information in the paper, patients whose records indicate they died before the study’s start date, and numbers that seemed to be too consistent to have occurred by chance.

I've made the decision to vacate my ZOTY Award and will not be posting anymore. It hasn't been any one particular incident, rather, just a collection of recent interactions that have me visiting this site and getting myself stressed out by sharing my opinions and reading the reactions to them. With my mental health in mind, I'm moving on and won't be on here.
I encourage anyone who's enjoyed engaging with me over the years to reach out via email so I can add you to my PZ email list. Peace, everyone- I sincerely wish you all health and happiness in these trying times. I guess this is my "Goodbye, Cruel Zone".
wha..? Jay wants to inject bugspray to get rid of Covid? Or at least entertain the possibility? I get it, life is hard and doesn't make sense.
Sounds like you got sucked into the easy-solution vortex. Stay off the internet dude and go to the library and read some books. It's what we used to do. Works.
<getting myself stressed out by sharing my opinions and reading the reactions to them.>
Geez.... lighten up. If I had a nickle everytime Jaz told me, "Alan you dumb bastard; your opinions smell like Louisiana mud, the Ravens cheat and your pictures suck..."
Is ivermectin the veterinary med Disco Stu claimed was a cure for Covid a few months ago? I'm too lazy to Google it, and don't want to be criticized for how many links I clicked if I did.
Slacker - the Dems are either pussies, distracted by the perks of power, or worried about poll numbers -- or all three. If the situation were reversed, Trump would be knocking on doors and dragging them to public floggings. His whole next term will be about vengeance.
“Under the Trump administration the Justice Department never actually substantively considered the evidence against Trump and whether or not he should be charged,” Maddow said. “The Justice Department never looked at it. There’s no reason why they couldn’t look at it now. He is only a former president now so he’s not protected by any Justice Department policy that would grant him immunity. So again. Any takers? Is this all just going to slide? What was this evidence collected for, anyway?” she questioned.
Jay don't do us like that. Far as I can see we're all a collection of damaged goods, except for Noodler,,, and judit of course.
The rest of us cretins in this place (no offense),, Lord help us.
You think you got it bad, my dog dug up my beautiful in bloom purple clematis this morning. I wanted to break his God damn neck but he's my dog, after a couple of "bad dog's" I have to just love him.
There might be a kernel of truth to what Slacker said.
Maybe it's just me, but over Covid I also caught a whiff of "I'm-a-nice-guy-and-work-my-ass-off-but-now-that-I'm-settled-down-a-bit-in-a-neighborhood-of-my-own-I'm-starting-to-get-annoyed-at all-the-lazy-ass-criminals-around-here-who-would-rather-break-into-my-house-and/or-live-off-my-hardearned-tax-dollars-than-get-a-job-but-I-can't-say-that-on-the-Zone-because-I'm-white-and-these-lowlifes-aren't-and-I'm-also-tired-of'all-this-virus-nonsense-so-hey,-maybe-I-am-starting-to-become-a-MAGAguy-and-it's-messin-with-my-head."
But no matter. "Fare The Well," as all the jamband promotors say. We retrieved JayBud's Zonie from the bottom of the thawed out hockey pond in Woonsocket where he tossed it.
We had it melted down and used all the gold to make a grill for Judit. I think the added bling suits her.
Thanks Mike. In a former line of work I actually had to know the diff between an en dash, and em dah and a hyphen. I like the hyphen.
And just because I don't keep up with wonder cures, I researched Ivermectin a bit and I'll go with the current synopsis in Nature, "Flawed ivermectin preprint highlights challenges of COVID drug studies." https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02081-w . Basically, not enough solid evidence, a whole bunch of articles already cited bunk research findings, and a whole lot of Covid patients aren't going to have scabies. If they survive.
But let's get back to the thread topic. Why is Trump and his family getting away with so much? Where are all the criminal charges Micheal Cohen, the MSNBC crowd, and all the other Dems / Never Trumpers have been crowing about for the past 4/5 years? Is the guy a genius, skirting the laws just enough not to get prosecuted? Is he buying people off like a drug cartel kingpin? Is he counting on Trump fatigue to protect him? And what about the henchmen? I mean Steve Bannon is still walking around a free man? Roger Stone? Micheal Flynn? They got nothing on these guys in spite of a pardon?
Mississippi officials warn against using ivermectin for COVID-19 amid spike in poisonings
Mississippi health officials are warning residents against using ivermectin, a horse dewormer medication, to treat COVID-19 infections at home amid a spike in poisoning calls to the Mississippi Poison Control Center
"At least 70% of the recent calls have been related to ingestion of livestock or animal formulations of ivermectin purchased at livestock supply centers"
Mississippi health official Dr. Thomas Dobbs said, "I think some people are trying to use this a preventative, which I think is really kind of crazy, so please don’t do that."
Slick - I wanna point out that my previous writing/editing career was very previous (20+ years ago) and I never took English in college. So I always deferred to the Chicago Manual of Style. But I would use a hyphen in there.
^ Like everything these days, it's complicated. I looked it up and first thought the answer was no -- no hyphen -- but then I read this again:
[The prefix post- means, “after” or “behind.” It is added to adjectives without a hyphen: postcolonial, postsurgical. ... Added to a noun to create a descriptor, however, post would require a hyphen: “Post-surgery care is vitally important.”]
Since you are connecting it to "studio," a noun, but it's really part of a description.....
I've been saying add a hyphen for months, but I've gotten resistance. And the person who makes the call is smarter on these things than I, edits and publishes for a living. But I still think they're wrong. Since I'm communicating through a third party, I may just call the decision maker myself to satisfy my curiosity. Damned Virgos just can't let shit go, ya know. Good thing it's not important.
trump also boo'd for telling the crowd to get vaccinated.
I cant believe repubs had the chance to flush this pos down the drain forever, all they had to do was have a backbone,, but nooooooooooooo. Now he'll be the albatross around their necks dragging the whole party down the drain in 2022 + 24.
A homeland security adviser to former Vice President Mike Pence accused the Trump administration of distorting the truth about Afghan refugees, writing on Twitter that the former president and Stephen Miller, his top immigration adviser, sought to prevent the refugees from entering the United States.
In an interview, Olivia Troye recalled sitting in meetings where Mr. Miller demanded restrictions on refugees, including those from Afghanistan and Iraq. She said the reductions in the refugee program during the Trump years hollowed out the government’s ability to bring the interpreters and others to the United States.
“Now we are in this crisis and they are saying Trump would have evacuated them,” Ms. Troye said. “But he didn’t in four years. You don’t get to play revisionist history here. There are people who know what the situation is.”
President Donald J. Trump and his allies have repeatedly claimed in recent days that his administration would have handled a withdrawal from Afghanistan better than President Biden, whom he criticized for failing to evacuate Americans and Afghans who worked with the United States. Top conservative commentators, including Ben Domenech, have tweeted in support of Mr. Trump.

As far as travel, that's a personal choice. Although yellow fever and rabies have animal reservoirs, typhoid, meningitis, and malaria do not. They are human disease.
It is very complicated and I don't need the government making complicated decisions for me.

The reservoir is where disease lives and grows. In short it's easier to isolate, minimize disease in human reservoir.
Corona viruses are not going away. They will continue to live and multiply in animals.

Sars - Covid 1 was discovered

Wasn't "flattening the curve"

I think the solution is a combination of the vaccines and other therapeutic meds such as Ivermectin. Also taking measures to better your overall physical health & wellness through diet, exercise, vitamin D and sound personal hygiene.

Here’s What You Need to Know about Ivermectin

OK Alan, should the phrase "post studio" have a hyphen?
If someone was to record something in a studio and then give it to someone to edit.....how would "post studio production and editing" be written?

^Racket, you do know that you're conflating things?
I wouldn't ask, but I'm genuinely unsure if you're aware.
Trump's a fascist and he incited an attempted coup.
Anti-vaxxers are ignorant, selfish, assholes, in general.
Granted, there is considerable overlap between those who support Trump, the fascist, and the aforementioned ignorant, selfish, assholes.

Slick - I wanna point out
Slick - I wanna point out that my previous writing/editing career was very previous (20+ years ago) and I never took English in college. So I always deferred to the Chicago Manual of Style. But I would use a hyphen in there.
The trick was/is: be consistent.

^ Like everything these days,
^ Like everything these days, it's complicated.
What was the question again? :-)

I've been saying add a hyphen
I've been saying add a hyphen for months, but I've gotten resistance. And the person who makes the call is smarter on these things than I, edits and publishes for a living. But I still think they're wrong. Since I'm communicating through a third party, I may just call the decision maker myself to satisfy my curiosity. Damned Virgos just can't let shit go, ya know. Good thing it's not important.
Thanks Alan and LCL for your thoughts and time.

NYT - Aug. 21, 2021
NYT - Aug. 21, 2021
Trump.
