They are huge animals and accidents can happen around them. Seen them from boats and the shore, but never in the water immediately next to them. Anyone here ever gone diving around big whales?.
I see whales almost every time I go out. Although the majority of Gray whales migrate to Alaska each spring to feed, and to Baja each fall to mate or give birth, a small number have taken up year-round residence in various parts of coastal Oregon. They feed around the kelp beds and shallow reefs just offshore. Usually they stay a couple of hundred yards out, but sometimes they'll come closer in.

I was surfing last fall near
I was surfing last fall near Newport OR and a Gray whale surfaced about 100 feet away.
