Fuck Facebook

Forums:

Fuels anger fosters hate, destroying our democracy from the inside. It may as well be a trump platform. I can't believe any person of conscience resides there. I've never been a part of it, never will. Everyone shoud take a stand and boycott it. Awesome 60 mins last nite, but I'm sure brain dead dumb all over amerika was glued to that brady patriot hogwash.

Too bad you don't know anyone who knows how to use Facebook.

Too bad you don't know how to process information.

Try to see what's going down
Maybe read between the lines

Amerika's falling falling falling - right before your eyes

We just processed a vacation. Shared pics and videos with all the faces.

You are doing what Facebook cons do. Making shit up.

ZERO FB presence, (or any social media for that matter ) all Social Media sucks, there is nothing redeeming about any of it what so ever. i give zero fucks about how many attendees of my grade school or HS are now either living " perfect lives " or are racists....

Note i did not say friends from the past. There's a reason i haven't kept in touch with nearly any one from those days...they are insignificant remnants of the past

I barely use Facebook but use Instagram (a FB product) often. Both are part of my photography career social media presence, which is essential these days. Because I was an AOL partner back in the day, I've always been aware of the pratfalls of over-sharing and conduct myself online in a manner that I consider moral. Facebook, or any online forum, can be evil...even the Zone. Use any of them with an informed view and caution and you are just fine.

If you have a Facebook or Instagram account, you're part of the problem.

i love instagram

because beth stern <3

Pics of our family are not a problem.

Sure they are. Your engagement with that platform is what makes it so powerful.

If you have a Facebook or Instagram account, you're part of the problem.

One can make the argument that having an account on any online site is part of the problem (your opinion, not mine)...including Viva/Zone.

Although I'm not a big fan of FB, it's not necessarily the platform's fault that Baby Boomers are so easily confused and manipulated when they venture online.

The TV Networks hate that FB has taken such a significant chunk of their ad revenue. Boo hoo CBS. Just as awful as FB, if not worse in many ways.

There's a reason i haven't kept in touch with nearly any one from those days...they are insignificant remnants of the past  <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Nice attitude --- jeez - pass the Prozac

Facebook and their subsidiary apps have all crashed today. Coincidence?

Hmmm... Facebook doesn't come up through my browser today on phone or computer. Coincidence?

Oh, I hadn't seen your post, Roarshock... even more widespread than just Facebook.

What does it all mean?

my crazy friend is off of it.

but listens to plenty of "podcasts".

podcasts are part of the problem.

Does the zone count as a social media platform

All

Yes, LLTD. Social media platforms are public places where users create and consume content.

I have a FB account.

I've unfollowed all my FB friends and I have my page locked so that nobody can post to it.

It's very problematic in my life.

The crazy aunt Barb's and Karen's of the world, now have more power than ever to influence, disrupt and divide.

Guaranteed fix for those that cannot connect to 'social media' .
1. In your phone go to settings - apps

2. Find facebook, then select 'uninstall'

3. Repeat for twitter, instagram, tiktok and any other 'social media'

So still down. Facebook, Insta, and Whatsapp. It has also been reported that employees badges couldn't get them into the building today and that their internal work platforms aren't working either. So far stock is only down 5% but this is pointing toward some very serious insider sabotage.

Is Amtrak hiring?

no slacker. due to costal erosion, they are closing the link between oc and sd.

>pointing toward some very serious insider sabotage.

Or Zuckerberg's deleting damaging files and improving security to prevent more leaks by denying  access to workers.

It amuses me that people who think social media is "evil" are complaining about it on a social media site.

That would assume they care about damaging information getting out. Nothing new was said last night on 60 minutes. Being down this long is incredibly damaging to their brand. You never want to give advertisers reason to think about where they are spending their billions.

Facebook is for old people.   I have an account and its been generally a positive experience.   Good way to keep in touch with folks, especially with a pretty hectic schedule.   As with any social media, not getting sucked into drama goes a long way to making it a positive experience.

And yeah. its weird that FB appears to be down.

Only certain sites are evil, not social media as a whole

It's like saying I don't like Phish, it doesn't mean I hate the genre

Lawyers care. The FCC care. And what was said on 60 minutes might not have been the worst. Could be Zuck's  brand of damage control.

Or maybe others who work at FB were as disgusted as the whistleblower and  took actions to sabotage the company. either way, Zuck is fucked. I don't expect we'll ever know for sure as Zuck will try and spin this to his advantage,

PS

we have numerous FB employees in our neighborhood who have been working at home since the pandemic, physically locking out workers isn't a big deal. Internet security breaches are a huge deal.. I will  bike over to the FB campus after lunch and see what's up, and circle back past Zuck's home..

Looks like there might be some life left on DNC if fb stays down. Not sure why DNC crashes so much but I suspect rh was bankrolling the site out of his own pocket, at least until Rhino took over the dead.net domain. Does anyone know if usenet is still up?

If fb ever comes back up check out the group called "the group where we all post like boomers" it's hilarious, although I think there's a "post like you're a trumpanzee" vibe blended in there too. GOBBLESSU

Watch China develop their own Facebook and market it to people worldwide..

Note: FB has been banned in China.

I joined facebooked when the real zone went away to stay in touch with zoners. That place gave me a headache.

I wasn't there long at all.

> It amuses me that people who think social media is "evil" are complaining about it on a social media site.

skifurthur, the word "evil" didn't appear in this thread until you used it.

I wouldn't say that FB is evil, but I do think they have an outsized influence in the world today, and I think their embrace of the idea that toxicity is good for business is a real problem. But evil? It's hard to say.

My only real social media was Twitter (yes, I realized I have this drug band message board handle), but they kicked me off in 2019 because I called Tomi Lahren a know nothing cheerleader bimbo.

FB is great for promoting a band / biz, without having to pay top dollar...   and it's good for networking with old friends.

But yes, easy to spread false everything on it, almost like the AM radio, lol.

My understanding was FB, and other social media sites, were originally suppose to be like the phone company / internet companies,  they weren't responsible for content, only provided a platform... as opposed to Radio and TV companies, who are responsible for content.  Now social media is being held responsible, not sure where that fits in legally, but it is curious to see them all down today.

Just to be clear, I am no fan of Facebook and hold Zuckerberg in even lower esteem. When it the word came out that even after Facebook went public, that Zuck has a super-administrator password (and only him) that allowed him access to every account, nook and cranny without oversight, I decided that he was a universe-class dickwad. In the article Nancy linked to one thing stood out that somewhat misleading.

Frances Haugen: The thing I saw at Facebook over and over again was there were conflicts of interest between what was good for the public and what was good for Facebook. And Facebook, over and over again, chose to optimize for its own interests, like making more money.

While distasteful, executives of a public corporation has a fiduciary responsibility to put the shareholder's good above all else. If they don't, they are usually sued and lose and end up on the hook for large monetary damages. Is it any wonder that they usually choose what is,  good for the bottom line of the company?

Basically the overall point I am trying to make is that social media is what YOU make it. Set your privacy/data settings a certain way and any large tech company doesn't get nearly what they can get if you go with the default. Blame yourself, the users, for the allowing the most egregious stuff to happen, not the public company that has to maximize profits or face other penalties.

I was too old for it.  Now I'm too young for it.

A bunch of shaky TXR streams aside, I haven't really engaged it.

I just heard Z-berg referred to as "a sociopath obsessed with the Roman Empire, which explains that haircut; . . . "smiley

> Sounds pretty nefarious

I like the sound of "nefarious", Nanc, meaning I like the sounds of the word itself, and its meaning also seems to resonate in this discussion too: (typically of an action or activity) wicked or criminal. "Wicked" is bad, but it's doesn't rise to a level of what I'd call evil.

> fiduciary responsibility

Fiduciary responsibility is one thing, skifurthur; aiding and abetting (and profiting from) an insurrection here in the US, or genocide in Myanmar, are different things entirely.

Maybe grimes did it

Or maybe X Æ A-Xii pulled the plug.

In Twitter news, I'm reading that Jack Dorsey is having a good day tweeting at FB's expense.

<< One can make the argument that having an account on any online site is part of the problem (your opinion, not mine)...including Viva/Zone.

It would be a pretty weak argument IMO, as viva is void of russian + chinese bots that flood the FB scene with disinformation of all kinds,, not to mention all their advertising bullshit. All we got for disinformation is one or 2 screwloose bastards that everybody knows are screwloose bastards. All social media sites are not created equal. Judit runs a clean machine over here, it's a clean machine.

I've been seeing a lot of unwanted right-wing troll stuff lately on FB, (maybe Russian hackers stirring the pot?). A lot of the posts are the same, but under different account names, so even if you 'hide' them or click the 'show less posts like this one', they still come up.

Yes FB can be very toxic, but is still a good way to connect with people for meet-ups, tickets, and goods. I've found some amazing deals on music gear, like 50 - 75% cheaper than ebay or Reverb. Of course, there is little buyer protection, but sometimes a deal is a deal. Case in point: I recently picked up a rare late 70's, fully functional Sunn bass cab for $125. I even saw a coveted Sunn model T amp, that usually goes for 2 - 3 grand, for $300 (missed it, alas).

[During a meeting in Washington, D.C. in 2019, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg agreed to not fact-check political posts if the Trump administration would steer clear of any “heavy-handed regulations,” venture capitalist Peter Thiel told an associate, according to a new book. The associate alleged that at the meeting—which was also attended by Thiel, former President Trump, Jared Kushner, and their spouses—Zuckerberg essentially promised to champion “state-sanctioned conservatism,” The Contrarian: Peter Thiel and Silicon Valley’s Pursuit of Power says. Zuckerberg denied the existence of a deal, saying that was “pretty ridiculous.”]

Thiel, FaceBook's original investor and Zuck's "mentor" (and still on the Board of Directors) is buddy buddy with Steve Bannon. He is currently giving lots of money to "Trumpist" candidates.

Roger McNamee was also an early investor in FB, and he's been quite critical of Zuckerberg in recent years.

All social media sites are not created equal. Judit runs a clean machine over here, it's a clean machine.

I agree that all social media sites are not created equal. That being said, all social media sites can have the same problems FB has. The potential is always there. As for Judit, the best evil geniuses are the ones that nobody suspects. :-)

And more than likely helps pay  for his favorite hobby/musical project

Just get rid of the three chipmunks please

I don't have fb on my phone. Never have.  I check in once a day on my desktop to catch birthdays and keep up with friends. And links to musical events I am interested in.  My page is mostly politics free these days.  It is a useful method of communicating with like minded folks and friends.

That being said,  I would be happy if it closed down. Too much chumpism bullshit and foreign influences.  One less checkin everyday.

<  as for Judit, the best evil geniuses are the ones that nobody suspects. :-)

Exactly,, good one,,, LOL

Back up.

Do psilocybin chat boards count as social media?  I hope not.

Insta-gram would be a great name for a weed delivery company.

Nobody will ever meet rasmatard the bot.

Back from a nice bike ride around the Bay. Was surprised that there wasn't one News truck parked outside FB Headquarters. They typically like to do their coverage in front of the 1 Hacker Way FB sign

The timing on the "maintenance" is just a tad suspicious, although I'm still inclined to believe that Zuck shut it down on purpose while he scrubbed incriminating evidence and communications. And also locked out most employees from accessing said evidence and communications. Yeah, a bit late for all that, but..

>..There was no evidence as of Monday afternoon that malicious activity was involved. Matthew Prince, CEO of the internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare, tweeted that “nothing we’re seeing related to the Facebook services outage suggests it was an attack.” Prince said the most likely explanation was that Facebook mistakenly knocked itself off the internet during maintenance...

It's back.

It's been somewhat entertertaining having Zuck's corp chumps out there attempting to engage in damage-control just like any other corp sewage receptacles typically do.

Facebook doesn't do anything illegal it just manipulates people for profit. It doesn't care what the consequences are as long as people spend more time on the platform and feed the $200,000 a second it gets in ad revenue. They have internal data that documents the harm. but making people angry, sad, and insecure is just more profitable so that is the content they push. It isn't really all that different than what the ad business has been doing since the beginning of time, but no one before has been able to do it at the scale they have - with the ability to crunch all that data and act on it instantaneously. They have built a scary machine that also happens to print money and we all know how this country works. The levers that print the most money are always turned to 11.

The government is the only thing that can reign them in, but they don't even understand the basics of the technology and mostly want to make sure that they don't lose any perceived advantage they are getting. All while technological change has never moved so fast and will never move this slow again.

You got it, kxela. Sometimes it seems like "tech" is or will soon be "the govt" as the one we actually currently have and the lame players within it have no clue how this (and many other things) actually work. They/It just gets their little piece or perceived competitive advantage and look the other way anyhow.

I went on FB at the request of several venues I frequent. When I go on FB, 95% of what I post there is music stuff.
The rest are B-Day greetings and the occasional obligatory response to life events where people expect a reaction from their FB "friends". This is especially true when I learn about the events from FB and not from phone calls as in pre-FB days.
About from the outset, I learned not to scroll. I found rather quickly a person could waste a lot of time doing that. Most of my FB friends are people who follow my musical endeavors and I have not even met most of them in 3-D.
Is Facebook harmful? Like most anything else, only if you let it.

McNamee on Democracy now! regarding fb.  There's a reason he dropped the stock.

Sless is More

"as viva is void of russian + chinese bots"

speaking of which....whatever happened to Byren?  Did Roger Stone stop handing out free coupons to Trump's golf courses to his Internet spam lackeys?  I need an update about when to expect Trump getting reinstated.

Judit, it looks like they are on to ya.

Viva does get quite a lot of Russian spam emails.

Just saw this message and it's definitely ironic that it was shared on FB

The Facebook Papers, chock full of reasons why it should be boycotted by anyone with a conscience. They stear you towards treason.

In the summer 2019, a new Facebook user named Carol Smith signed up for the platform, describing herself as a politically conservative mother from Wilmington, North Carolina. Smith’s account indicated an interest in politics, parenting and Christianity and followed a few of her favorite brands, including Fox News and then-President Donald Trump.

Though Smith had never expressed interest in conspiracy theories, in just two days Facebook was recommending she join groups dedicated to QAnon, a sprawling and baseless conspiracy theory and movement that claimed Trump was secretly saving the world from a cabal of pedophiles and Satanists.

'Company Over Country' is their motto for fucks sake. Zuckerberg should be lined up in front of a firing squad.

Adam Schiff is on it. He's prosecuting everyone.

Zuck is planning to address the allegations  by rebranding and renaming Facebook.
Everyone  understands the major  problems with his company's actions (and inaction) and why this tech company and others need to be regulated.

Rohingya sue Facebook for $150B, alleging role in violence | AP News

Lawyers filed a class-action lawsuit Monday in California against Facebook parent Meta Platforms, saying Facebook’s arrival in Myanmar helped spread hate speech, misinformation and incitement to violence that “amounted to a substantial cause, and eventual perpetuation of, the Rohingya genocide.”

It's doing the same thing here - Democracy Genocide
