Frozen Shoulder

Forums:

This one’s for you, Alan.

In one felled swoop I partially tore 2 of my rotator cuffs, the labrum and the bicep tendon. I babied it for 6 weeks before seeking medical help, so much so that the shoulder froze. That turned out to be infinitely more devastating and painful than the tears.

Bg advice: do not go to a physical therapist. They’ll manipulate it more than it should, which will increase the adhesion.

Try cortisone. It helped me.

To exercise it, find an overhead bar and “hang” from it for 30 seconds a day. Make sure your feet can touch the ground because you won’t really hang. At first, you’ll barely be able to put any weight on it. Do both a narrow and wide grip. Over time you’ll find you can start to hang.

Even with doing absolutely nothing, it will go away in 9-12 months.

Its a shitty injury. I’d move my arm while sleeping and wake up in searing pain.

can you play golf?

Just on the IPad. And putt putt.

Do those count?

putting is golf

I can’t play real golf, even with good shoulders.

But I couldn’t play mini golf when the shoulder was at its peak of being frozen.

I thought this was a Sheep or Goat recipe.

If one of their shoulders winds up in the Freezer,  my belief is to marinate first,  then a dry-rub,  smoke it slow & low for the proper length of time.

I Smacked My Right Shoulder Almost 2 Years ago - Still hurts___ Right side Sleeping and Woken forced to Roll Over to Left side no

Cortisone shots fucked up my eye sight, 2 eye doctors diagnosed - actually misdiagnosed me with macular degeneration. Wasn’t until months later when the effects of the cortisone wore off that my eye sight improved.

my lil sis swears by the cortisone shots for her shoulder and it’s the only way she can continue her job - teaching and performing circus arts. She only gets the cortisone injections using guided imagery which is the only safe way to go.

My doc just administered the shots in his  office. Never again.

I was cooking bacon when I had my first frozen shoulder and some grease flared up and hit my hand. I did the instinctual thing and yanked my hand back. Ended up on the floor in the fetal position. Worst pain I have ever felt. That was when my wife decided that this whole frozen shoulder thing wasn't just me getting out of helping her move couches around.

I have had both sides. Yes to cortisone shots they help a lot. No to PT, as one of my friends who is a physical therapist said it pretty much takes a year to go away no matter what you do. Had another friend who had the surgery for hers and that helped a lot, but she couldn't sleep at night.

Reaching thru the car window to push the ticket button in a parking garage.....like getting your arm stepped on by a bucking bronco... The drive thru ATM is a real challenge.

The weird part is they can tell you what happens (what it looks like inside your shoulder) but not why it happens or what they can do about it. Fairly common.

Because it's inflammatory in nature, I think there's some non-mechanical therapies out there that might be effective.

Today I brought in some wooden "swinging pins/Indian clubs" into PT to see if they would be good to use (one of my friends swears by them for mobility and flexibility), and my therapist said one thing and the therapist next chair down said the opposite. Use them. Don't use them. Stretch. Don't stretch.  Do it this way. Do it that way. I mean they want you to get better but they really have no idea. The best part about this place is that there is a giant (non-dead) dancing skeleton banner in the exercise room.

Reaching for the seatbelt, or getting a glass out of the cupboard.

Feel better, man. I have been getting the spinal cord steroid shots on L3.  They help tremendously this go around.

Waiting for the mmj to get up and going in Louisiana.

There is a treatment that helped my fathers knee and my sisters shoulder PRP platelet rich plasma . They take three vials of blood from you spin it and isolate the platelets and inject it into the  shoulder knee etc  costs 175 dollars .They were both blown away with the results

My wife had her life ruined by a steroid injection that caused irreparable nerve damage. Don't take the possible side effects lightly. They are listed because they happen to a small percentage of patients. It's all good until it's you..

Doc that sounds Frankenstein-ish.  I was hoping for a more hippy dippy acupunture-like remedy. Something that doesn't involve blood, surgery, or big injections.

I tried the cortisone shot and maybe it helped reduce background pain, but the not being able to move or reach (taking off a wet tee-shirt is impossible), is tiresome.

Regular shots I'm ok with, but I understand Nancy's point about proper targeting. My doc just went for it and maybe I was lucky or he knows what he is doing. Rumor has it he used a long-ass needle, but thankfully I was turned the other way.

Two weeks ago the doc hit the sweet spots. Easy to target the L3. Mixed results on the previous L4L5S1 injections It perhaps was too big of a target. Alf 360 S1 L4 L5 fusion REALLY helped. Now the stress is on the L3.

I have zero regrets about the two previous surgeries but I woul prefer not a third if possible.

Alan , like you I will try ALL the hippy dippy stuff next. Treatments are starting to be available and legal in my area.

Jaz I'm mainly into the "science-based" alternative ones - for instance the whole homeopathic thing is definitely full of shit -- though I respect the value of a placebo.

I've never tried acupuncture, but I'm willing to experiment with a couple thousand years of Chinese medicinal knowledge.

I know or have heard of too many bullshit artists who became chiropractors, so I'm not trying that.

Yoga ws good for me when I did it.

If frozen shoulder is so common, there's got to be some useful remedies out there.

I'm still focused on the anti-inflammatory path. It seems if something became inflamed, there has to be a way to un-inflame it.

Frozen shoulder is more than just inflammation, it’s adhesion. That’s why they can’t figure out a strategy, other than time. It’s like the glue just disintegrates and all is good.

PT worked for me

>>>>Frozen shoulder is more than just inflammation, it’s adhesion. That’s why they can’t figure out a strategy, other than time. It’s like the glue just disintegrates and all is good.

BK - Thanks for that succinct insight.  Actually makes sense to me. I wish my doctor was that straightforward. Hhmmmmm, exactly how does one acquire a disintegrator gun and are they legal to purchase in my State?

(Maybe I"ll ask that other Zoner how he becomes so "unglued" after his Zone visits -- no, skip that)

Agreed with the bullshit call,Alan. Quite a few years ago (in the old hep c folder)we had a quack across the border in Mexico pushing some bullshit hep c cure from injecting ozone into the bloodstream.

We through down the bullshit card.

My state will be CBD only dispensaries . I have high hopes I will qualify for a card.

Get well both of you , Alan and Brian d

One note from above that platelet thing is your own blood and it is being done all over the country no more invasive than that cortisone shot takes ah hr  .My sister has lupus and it worked wonders for her where nothing has ever worked .  Careful with those shots in the spine a local 28 year old is paralyzed from a neck shot  .Be careful out there ....I swear by acupuncture gets me upright when I hurt myself  and keeps me moving .It takes a few visits to get results but it works,It's a thousands of years old and works with all the electrical circuits in the body. Thats why I like it being an electrician and all that ..........I toast to a pain relief weekend to all  I also love my Cbd/THc Herb !

I have a similar thing going on w/ my left shoulder... continual low-level pain and occasional searing shriek-inducing shoulder pain when I move my arm away from my body

I first noticed I had a problem in January... first saw a doctor in early Feb., got an X-ray, then referred to PT in March... things got progressively worse in April & May and I'm really in a bad way now... got an appointment w/ an orthopedic specialist on Monday & hopefully I can get a cortisone shot which will hopefully give me some relief from the near-constant discomfort & pain

X-rays showed it's not a rotator cuff injury... but there's a calcium deposit 17 millimeters in diameter and a few mm thick WITHIN the bursa which is suspected of irritating the nerves or nerve endings

haven't had an MRI yet... I've been asking for one for almost 3 months, but they say I have to go thru the Physical Therapy thing first... PT has actually made the problem worse but nobody seems to be listening to me

I'm most comfortable when standing with my left arm hanging along my side... next most comfortable is sitting... and by far the most pain and discomfort is lying down... suffice it to say I'm hardly getting any quality sleep, 2-3 hours at a time max in recent days, and even then I've had to take Tramadol with sleeping medication in order to get that 2-3 hours at a time

I have one of those padded chair-like things that you put at the head of your bed, and I can sleep a little bit better partially propped up in that "chair" rather that lying down

when trying to sleep, the most comfortable arm position is for me to s-l-o-w-l-y maneuver my left arm so it's extended up and over my head... hard to hold it in that position for extended periods though

needless to say I'm in a bad way, not just b/c of the pain but b/c it's been so long since I've had a quality night's sleep

my hope is that my Monday appointment will result in some measure of relief at last... that would be a nice present, as Monday is my 65th B-Day, and Medicare kicks in that day also

wish me luck

forgot to mention that for the last 4+ months, I've been using every anti-inflammatory substance I can get my hands on... eating organic blueberries & raspberries, pineapple, broccoli, avocadoes, salmon, sardines, walnuts, almonds... herbal supplements turmeric w/ black pepper, ginger, arnica, and others... salve w/ THC & CBD... a prescription anti-inflammatory cream called Diclofenac Sodium Topical Gel, 1% (which actually helps quite a bit but for less than an hour at a time)... and the old standby ibuprofen

I'm sure, in total, most of the above are helping... but for the type of searing pain I have I suspect that surgery may be the ultimate treatment

Jeeez, you people and all your pains. I'm so sorry to hear it all. Luckily, I have no body pains right now. I'll count my blessings.

Lotta potheads with frozen shoulder. Coincidence? I think not. I think we found out where all the rolling paper glue from all the joints we consumed all these many years deposits itself. Damn.

the pain does suck, Gary. and unfortunately there is no magic bullet.  Most of the data indicates that the frozen shoulder and related pain typically resolves itself within 3 years. Not comforting, I know. in most cases the intense pain lasts 6 months or so. Of course if you have other shoulder issues, surgery or shoulder replacement should be considered. the surgery can speed up recovery time, but also comes with it's own risks. get a few opinions from different docs  since they're all over the map

For some reason, women are more susceptible to the condition, and some doctors blame "hormone imbalance"

When one doc told me that, I asked by Ob/Gyn doc and she said hogwash. Essentially they have no fucking idea of the cause and how to treat it properly.  Do whatever works for you (more CBD!) and either be patient and wait it out or find a good surgeon to look at your MRI. I'm regretting not having the surgery...

Hey Gary that diclofenac comes in pill form and I get great results over night with inflammation and pain taking it orally .I turned catch on to them for his hands . You have to be careful if you have any heart issues with that drug . The Pill form works good .

bump - any news from yesterday's appointment, Gary?

I'm researching acupuncture.

The aim of this study was to Investigation of the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of frozen shoulder. CONCLUSION: In the case of acupuncture and ultimately improve the overall look of all the movement of flexion and adduction of the shoulder, but the movement has been further improved, VAS index at three months after treatment compared with the control group had a greater improvement and finally, we perform acupuncture as a way to improve shoulder motion in patients with frozen shoulder offered

The Remedy for Frozen Shoulder That No One Talks About

Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, isn’t as official as it sounds. Frozen shoulder just refers to shoulder pain that leads to restricted range of motion. It is a catch-all diagnosis for shoulder pain and immobility for which the underlying cause is unknown.Janet Travell, the author of Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual, speaking of the medical literature on frozen shoulder, says, “When so many authors agree that the cause of a disease is enigmatic, there is good reason to expect that a major etiologic factor is being overlooked.”This major factor, according to Travell, is trigger points in the subscapularis muscle. Acupuncture can eliminate these trigger points, wiping out frozen shoulder for good and offering people an alternative to the common — yet usually only temporarily effective — protocol of pain killers, cortisone shots, and surgery....

Hang in there Brian. lol

Acupuncture worked very well for me, even with only 2-3 treatments.

Had some neck / upper back pain & stiffness.  Between the acupuncture and some massage therapy I felt much better.

The "Accugraph" charting machinery is quite interesting.  Look it up.  Great diagnostic interface.

Update:

on Monday afternoon I had an appointment with an orthopedic specialist who administered a steroid injection, which so far seems to be having the hoped-for positive results -- greatly reduced pain in my left shoulder (and no more shriek-inducing pain!) which allowed me to get a full, uninterrupted night's sleep last night for the first time in over 2 months!

Doc -- thanks for the info on the diclofenac pills... I'll check into that

Alan -- that's some good info you posted on acupuncture and frozen shoulder... thanks!

I swear by acupuncture as well...

A friend of mine is scheduled for the platelete/plasma injection treatment as well...think she s having /had it this week. If so, and i get any news i will share results etc...

Positive vibes for all those suffering
