Friday Pet Chat...Harmonies coexistence

Forums:

Good morning, people.

Happy Friday! We've had our conure for about 6 months now and I am surprised at how much I interact with it. Figured my daughter and my wife would be the ones to play with it, but Kiwi seems to like me and he/she likes to ride around on top of my head. The big surprise is my dogs are great  with the bird, even had Kiwi on the one dog's back. Glad that everyone gets along as kiwi could live for 30 years.

That is awesome! We had a Patagonian Conure from 1984-2018. (34 years). When we got him they said he might have been 1 or 1.5 yrs old. He was a good bird as well. He loved my dad the most. If he was in the room nobody else existed. When dad was gone from the room or not at home he would let others pay attention to him. He loved peanut m&m's, just for the peanut in side he did not eat the chocolate. He also liked to sip on fruit juice from my dads cup. Funny bird.

Nice.

we have a six thousand dollar cat...

^That's crazy.  Bird was $600, but will live 25-30 years. Dogs are rescues.

Nellie is a good looking dog, Mark.

Jim, were you able to teach your conure to talk?

I was hoping the other Pet Chat thread, the one without the typo in the title, would get bumped, but no such luck.

He learned a few words but we were told (pre internet) that conures may or may not learn to talk. Once in a while he would say something and we would all look around and laugh. He could copy noises mostly. Whistles and bell dings etc... My parents still have a cockatoo, that bird won't stop talking. I stopped holding her when she bit my face, that one hurt for a while.

^I've read that about conures, Jim. I am curious if my dogs will obey commands from the bird, so I am trying to teach it to say "sit."  A bite to the face by a cockatoo sounds painful, read that they have a bite force of approximately 350lbs psi.
