Friday Pet Chat

Forums:

Hello folks. Hope everyone's pets are well. My two are happy and healthy, although the the tri-color is not a fan of the chilly mornings. Black one had a growth on her rear foot last month, but luckily it was benign. Lately I've been grilling filet mignon for my wife and son, but dogs get a little too. They go a little nuts when it's being prepared, it's seems that they really enjoy steak.

I stopped eating beef 25 years ago.

When my wife cooks chicken in the oven my dogs all pay close attention. They associate the smell and treats. When I am clearing the table we save the organs and give them when we are done. The lungs are their favorite by far.

Once a week we buy a package of chicken hearts and saute them up. They sit so patiently in the kitchen watching my every move. I call them my 3 little sous chefs. The cool off period is the time between cooking them and feeding them is very hectic for them. Very little patience. When they are done eating you can tell it was worth the wait.

My father-in-law went from being the Controller of several Silicon Valley Start-Ups to a Calveras County based Horse Rancher with 40 acres of pasture and a facilities to board horses for income.   This was all due to the manipulation of his (female) partner who grew up in SoCal as a Rodeo Chick....

They took in abandoned horses (including Thoroughbred race horses) and paid for it via the income they received for bording other horses.

They wound up with an extended family of cats, a nubian billy goat up to 30 horse and 4 dogs.

Regrettably as time passed my in-law succombed to Alzheimer's and the ranch was shut down.

As of about a month ago me and the Mrs. were forced to take 2 of these ranch dogs in.

That's Benny on the left (he's 6 and about 60 lbs) and Cassie on the right (she's 8 and about 90 lbs).
He's a lab mix and she's a Lab/Newfy mix.

We already have a Rotty mix (Rufus) and a Tuxedo Cat (Calvin) so it's a fuckin' zoo in our little home in SF.

It's not a done deal yet, but Cassie has found a home in Cole Valley (SF) with a nice young lady from Minnesota.

We decided to keep Benny cause he's a total keeper - mellow, easy on walks and a love bug!

Here is my 20-year-old cat Keke, who passed away two weeks ago.

Bitchy Keke.jpg

Found her in a barnyard in Vermont living with a bunch of other cats when she was just a tiny kitten.

She was an indoor-outdoor cat all her life and roamed the neighborhood right up until her final days.  She was a champion birder, intimidated dogs, and once fought a raccoon and won.   She was obsessed with cheese and would steal your pizza right off your plate to get some.   But whatever she did, she did with style, poise, and grace.  She will be missed.

This is Charlie Pickles on a recent hike last weekend. He likes sticks.

RIP Keke.  20 years is a good long run for an indoor / outdoor Kitteh.

Lots of good-looking Pets here.

Hüsky has really been enjoying the Cool weather last few days.  With the thick fur,  he is sluggish in Summer.  Now he has perked - up quite a bit.

Apparently he slaughtered a Fat mouse last night;  I found the corpse this AM in his favorite backyard spot.

He doesn't eat the rodents.  Just plays with them until they stop moving.  The original  free-range Squeaky toy crying

Soon he'll be back in the Pine Barrens for Sled-Dawg training.  When it's under 50 degrees,  that's the time.

Tuolie at the the beach last weekend.  She's going to be bummed when she has to stay home this weekend.  No dogs allowed in the wilderness areas we'll be hiking in.

That is a harsh statement. They are different in their own way.

We have many of both and I would not be happy without either.

Y'all have some glorious pets. I only have squirrels and a lot of birds that come to the yard and the feeder. I'm so glad they like hanging out here - they remind me of Greg. He especially liked the squawky ones like the jays and the crows. Have lots of those and also finches, chickadees, hummingbirds, starlings and other small birds. Some afternoons and early evenings they all are talking (some arguments, as you can imagine with the jays) and it's the best type of cacophony.

((cacophony))

My puppy will have a restroom this winter.

This was a lot of work for one day.  Roto-tilling the soil, raking and shoveling, spreading manure and compost, roto-tilling in,  raking even and grading, laying the sod, watering it and cleaning up after.   I was toast afterward.

I feel  quite Blessed to share my Home with pet Hüsky.  He is Super - Kool Dog,  and takes me hiking,  biking and swimming.

Everywhere he goes,  it's Fun.  He loves going places.  Open a car door and He's In.  "Let's Go !! We are going !!"  Brother Hüsky holds a blessing;  Brother Hüsky holds a curse.

That hound has Harems at every retail outlet where Pets are allowed.  Lowe's or Home Despot have wide aisles with interesting Lumber to sniff.  The personelle there descend upon H.I.M.  and scratch his fuzzy belly,  kiss his snout and so forth.  He really likes the attention.

His favorite is  "Ross Dress For Less"  because the Gorgeous young Ladies fawn all over H.I.M.  and whisper sweet nothings in his fluffy Ears.

Hüsky has Groupies in many, many stores.  He is one Lucky Dog.

^ Such pretty blue eyes.

Mark, that's quite deluxe for your pup. No mud for her!

Her eyes glow red like a demon at night. It's frickin' awesome.

Hüsky has the one Blue,  one Brown eye (heterochromism).  At night when I go out with a flashlight to check the food / water levels,  the colors are reversed with the light in his eyes.

The other day at Dog Park,  three Northern Dawgs remained just before dark.  Samson,  all-white Husky-Samoyed cross + a new fellow,  Husky-American Eskimo cross + my hound.  They all had  the two-color eye thing going on.  It was a rare occurrence.

Paradise, your kitty looks like the Birman breed, is it?

Would love to find a kitten like that, though I'm now dealing w/ dental issues for our current 6 yr old grey tuxedo kitty, Daphne.  The surgery estimates are killing my budget!

Gotta get pet insurance.

She's a seal point "apple head traditional" Balinese https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balinese_cat

They're very expensive with papers, but you can find adoptable Balinese cats for much less money (around $200) through a Balinese rescue site. Unfortunately people breed them, then abandon the cats when they're no longer producing litters :(

Sorry about Daphne's health problems. My last cat was a tuxedo and I adored her, she was awesome.

Thanks Paradise, We are making the appointment soon, as we don't want her situation to turn into an abcess.

Yes, will seek out rescue sites.

Not seeking a registered pet, would rather take the time to find a rescue kitty.

Have a great day w/ your kitty!

Damn Nyxie keeps raiding the auto feeder! In the first day that it was set up, she had pulled out the tray, pawed up inside the chute and knocked the whole thing over! So I started on with fastening the thing down with screws and wire. Thought I had it all screwed down and secure, then she goes and rips off the feed tray! Well it's better than finding the whole feeder on it's side, but I had to then wire the tray down too! I'll see what happens with the latest set up, might go home and she'll have flipped the kitchen table over on top of the thing!

And after the kitchen table, the fridge...

"Clumpy Gus" chose the "Lion Cut" over our proposed "comb-out" treatment:
