Foxboro 7-14-90

Forums:

Summer tour '90 doesn't receive a ton of high accolades but RFK->Foxboro->Buff->2x Deer Creek presents a band that continued to harness the juju of spring tour.

Mr. Phil Lesh crushes the Eyes.

Only time I was shut out.

Hot as hell that summer.  They even brought out the water guns for this one.

Can't believe that it's been 27 years.

Show that my friend Sheri and i left in ambulance from patriots locker room, as during opening notez to Eyes....(we were just to right of soundboard area) Sheri dropped to tarp w severe de hydration....

But, i did score a Buffalo miracle at hospital from wonderful gentlemen who had broken his leg at show....;)

Autzen/Shoreline Summer 90 were pretty hot.

Cal Expo as well

all those shows are pretty sick.

my short-lived prime time

ps foxboro crowd and mud lot were the worst of the tour.

Fear and loathing on tour.

.....those were the days my friend

Ah, the show with the bright blue tarp on the ground around the sound board....

and the large puddle of bright yellow, chunky puke lying on it in the simmering summer sun.

On the bright side, I remember Jerry hanging out on the side of the stage for Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians' entire set.

We've talked about the contents on that tarp Tom.  My dipshit friend at the time....  Healy was fucking RIPPED!

Last show that I saw Brent.  I remember him looking like a skeleton on the keys --- straight out of the Touch of Grey video.

I was there an can't remember a single thing about that show.

Spring/Summer 90 some of the best Dead music  ever made..

Well, def. the best GD music that version of the band made.

68-78 a whole 'nother story.

IMO.

Ikr, Jonas!!

I enjoyed this show

"Last show that I saw Brent.  I remember him looking like a skeleton on the keys"

I saw RFK though Buffalo, every time he came on the big screen it looked scary.  Big bug eyes popping out of his head.

I get you were just shooting this response out there but if you are going to break them into periods, say 68-74 cause it's more precise and more illuminating, at least to my way of thinking.

(I guess you could say 68-75 but I think 74 in my own head.)

Then 76-79 if you want to compare it to that period.

Then 79-86 and 86-90 and 90-95.

This Foxboro show has Lesh sounding all rubbery--the sound he has going on is pretty sublime.  I've never done heroin but if I was to do it, this is the show from this period I think I'd take out--due to the sound of Phil's bass and the way he's playing it.  It's a kick ass show, as we all know, the only thing lacking was a post space Garcia ballad.  The show would have gone even further with one of those I think.

The Bid U made it so no one could gripe about it though, on that night.  But now everything is allowed---quite obviously.

Good to see a Felina post. Spot on as usual.

Nice to see you too Tatters...hope you are doing well.

Same for the rest of yous.

To my way of thinking there are 7 versions of the GD.

1.Orig. quintet - 65-67
2.Mickey (and TC for a year in the middle) 67-70
3.Keith (and Donna, for most of this time), w/o Mickey 71-74 (first 2/3 of 71 I consider an "imter-regnum")
4.K and D, plus Mickey 75-78
5.Brent, pre-Jerry coma 79-86
6.Brent, post-coma 87-90
7.Vince, sometimes Bruce 90-95

My point was, IMO, bands 2 through 4 were usually more interesting than 5 and 6, although 90 was the peak of the Brent era.

YMMV.

I definitely agree with Surf's breakdown of eras.

I got your point Surf...hence me saying I get you were just throwing something out there w/out taking the time to be more specific.

Everyone can have their own version of eras but I was breaking them down in the most general sense in which they should be broken down, cause otherwise, it's apples and oranges and pears and grapes all over the place intermingling and fucking up any point one is trying to make.

To me, your eras are fine other than this:

>>>4.K and D, plus Mickey 75-78

Should really be this:

75-79

Was Keith really in the band in 1979? I swear, I don't think I can hear him on one tape. I know he was sitting at the piano, but did he even play?

Thought this thread could use a summer '90 Garcia photo.

He looked good. All trimmed up with smiles to boot.

Yeah, I know Keith did a tour in early 79, but I was generalizing, year-wise.

But Brian is correct; you can barely hear him most of the time.

This was the period when Jerry (or Bob?) said about Keith "At this point we were just trying to lose him in the mix."

Keith was a shadow of himself in 79 as well as in many shows in 78.

It's irrelevant to eras/periods though.

You need to get better ears then, Brian.  He's listless as hell for the most part, especially compared to his playing in '73 and '74, but he's there (excluding the times he's nodded out).
