Foods You Miss

Forums:

Any places go out of business you wish were still in business? Or food that was discontinued?

I was craving a Hot Sam's pretzel with cream cheese dip. Loved those!

Also, there was this place when I was growing up that had their own twist on a big mac that was sooooo good. It went up in flames and never reopened.

They were char-broiled? smiley

>Or food that was discontinued

Great sentence

A bakery in town burnt down completely a number of years ago and was out of commission for over a year, but they rebuilt a nearly exact replica (from the outside).   Likewise, used the same recipes for everything.   Was thinking recently that I had missed their doughnuts and such while they were away ... and the owner isn't getting any younger at this stage of the game.  Unless a new owner replicates all recipes, the "dosant's" days might be numbered.

The 'Howard Johnsons' of the 60's & 70's had pretty good Burgers, Fries & Shakes and were everywhere in the NE. All the food tasted real, and the ice cream was good.

I was thinking the other day that I miss Bob's Big Boy restaurants.

It is a great sentence as well as a great question!

Didn't Bob's Big Boy have that huge guy outside their places holding up a burger?

discontinued / extinct

but you're right

good question

thank god the Twinkie isn't extinct

a long ago local restaurant whose homemade chili consisted of some meat and beans marinating in a glorious pool of orange grease...yes

Steak tips from Dom's sausage company, Hilltop or New Bridge cafe. Boston, not available on west coast without mail delivery.

Chocolate jimmies (sprinkles) available at DQ in Mass but not in Cali!

WTF!

RibWich?

Doh!

Brigham's ice cream shops in NE. I guess you can still get ice cream in the supermarkets of the area that has that name on it, but back in the late 60s/early 70s Brigham's ice cream shops had the best sundaes and frappes (milkshakes) anywhere.

Friendly's fribble to but I hear ya on the Brigham's.

Not a food, but...LEMONHEADS candies.

Thought I might see them at Cracker Barrel with the other Stuff Out Of The Past, but no go.

Back in high school we used to take our dates to Uhlman's ice cream shop in Southborough, MA if you wanted a second date. Torn it down to build houses for two rich assholes who murdered each other.

Lance, lately I've missed BBB fried chicken, it was really good.

On that note, I miss Pioneer Chicken too. I guess they've been closed for well over 20 years now but I caught myself craving it the other day.

Charlie's Hideaway - the best Thai food I've ever had and absolutely nothing else comes even close.

There was an ice cream shop where I grew up that made a bittersweet chocolate ice cream that tasted just like dark chocolate.I've found a few other brands that sell that flavor but none taste like the real deal.

My aunt Pat (RIP) had a country bakery "Pat's Bakery" in Chruchtown, Maryland that made the best cinnamon buns and sweet buns I ever had.

Louis' Pizza in Wallingford, CT. The pizza of my youth.

New York Seltzer

H Salt Fish and Chips...........

I'm in Louisville KY this weekend and their is a Big Boy. Not sure if it's bobs but they have the statue.

ZZA's Trattoria in Oakland had my absolutely favorite dish of all-time:  Chicken-smoked mozzarella-cilantro pesto calzone.

Salty, smoky, tangy, chewy......   I had several of those before the place closed down.

I also loved their shirts and it was fun to see photos of people wearing them all over the world.

It was my first favorite neighborhood restaurant when we moved to Adams Point in 1992.  Had a surprise 30th birthday party there.  I miss that place.

They sell NY Seltzer around here. Is it not the real thing?

Cool. It appears to be the real thing. I wasn't aware they brought it back in 2015.

>Bob's Big Boy

Does anyone remember that shitty 80's scavenger hunt movie???

I always thought that the nerdy guy should have become a household name.

Grew up in Gettysburg PA. We had a Bob's Big Boy, very fond memories.

I miss the Nick Tahou Garbage Plate from Rochester

Me too Tim, Mom is the answer. Everything she cooked, was cooked with love.

In the grand concourse of the München Hauptbahnhof, what I want to do is go to Yorma's and buy a half liter bottle of Augustiner Bräu Lagerbier Hell, then go to the Bratwurst kiosk where I get the skinny dark spicy ones -- 2 of them on a hard roll with a dolp of German mustard. Eat that standing up with my beer while travelers come and go all around -- I miss that. Bonus points if it's happening during Oktoberfest.

Way back in the late '80's when the Arizona brand (iced tea) started out, they used to make Pina Colada and Strawberry Daquiri flavored "juice beverages".  I used to love to use these as mixers w/rum or tequila to make various mixed drink concoctions.  Now I know these were nothing more than High Fructose Corn Syrup, water, & flavorings, and at that time I had not yet gotten into the craft microbrew scene (which was only barely getting started), so yes, I was then still into "sugary chick drinks" that I mock nowadays (I've always hated Budweiser/other cheap commercial beer).  I will say that these Arizona drinks made much better flavored liquor drinks than the mixers commercially sold @ liquor stores (& were far cheaper).

There were also these granola bar type snacks which had a cream cheese/cheesecake type middle filling (in various fruit flavors) which were only around a year or so, around the same time frame, man I loved them too.

Knudsen's. Grew up at the top of the hill from them

Best ice cream evah

Chicken Delight. Used to be on the EC selling take-out fried chicken.   'Don't cook tonight, call Chicken delight'

It was pretty good. Also Cohen's Knishes, don't know if they're still around.

And Heinchon's Ice Cream on rt 22 in Pawling NY - only used to be open in the summer, really fresh ice cream, closed a year or so ago. I miss that place.
