Between the two, Florida at least has the Keys and an unnatural level of weirdness going for it that keeps it entertaining.
As for Texas:
"Why pick on Texas? Because it typifies, concentrates and exaggerates most everything that is rotten in America: it's vulgar -- not only cultureless but anti-cultural; it's rich in a brazen, vulgar, graceless way; it combines the bigotry and sheer animal ignorance of the Old South with the aggressive, ruthless, bustling, dollar-crazy brutality of the Yankee East and then attempts to hide this ugliness under a facade of mock-western play clothes stolen from a way of life that was crushed by Texanism over half a century ago. The trouble with Texas: it's ugly, noisy, mean-spirited, mediocre and false." - Edward Abbey.
"How to Avoid Pleurisy: Never make love to a girl named Candy on the tailgate of a half-ton Ford pickup during a chill rain in April out on Grandview Point in San Juan County, Utah." -- Ed Abbey
My sweet friend Gail Hoskisson, an incredibly devoted wilderness activist who was taken by that fucker cancer way too soon, bought Ed's truck at the auction to benefit SUWA.
I had the honor to play guitar in front of it at the 1998 event.
This is the amazing Gail Hoskisson. What a spirit. Quite the lady.
And you'll see Seldom Seen Smith himself (Ken Sleight). In case you hadn't heard, Ken's archives at Pack Creek Ranch got burnt up this summer by a fire started by leaving a campfire unattended. See the pictures, so so sad. Even had Ken's Lake to draw water from but did the firemen listen? Hell no. Days later in the effort, they DID come and take water from the lake. Ken had one of the best collection of archives in southern Utah. He had quite the history. All documented. And now gone.
When the shit was hitting the fan in the mid 90's, Gail organized volunteers to go out and survey and map the Utah Wilderness Coalition's proposal. And kept it all together so when it was challenged, the Coalition had the best information, even better than the BLM's, making it extremely difficult to challenge. What an effort. LOVE YOU GAIL.
Kinda disappointed that rich dink (who owned a ski company) made her pay so much.

My bet is that Cactus Ed
My bet is that Cactus Ed would hate today's Moab or Salt Lake City just as much as he hated the Texas of the 1970s.
On the other hand, he'd probably like the Big Bend area:

He was anti-people in general, but yeah, his views on immigration caused a bit of a schism in the Earth First! community.
