Flat water kayaking in the Bay Area

Forums:

Hey Now.

When we move to the Livermore area, we're bringing 2 kayaks and a canoe.  We can store them here at our house in Ohio, but I am betting that won't be the case where we're movin.  Even if we could, we probably wouldn't be able to park our trailer we use to carry them.  We're selling that before we move.

So, we are looking for cool places that not only offer great flat water kayaking, but a place to store the 3 boats.  We're not sure exactly where we're gonna be living, but it will be in or around the Livermore area.

We're googlin stuff, but I was wondering if anyone in the Bay Area has a nice place to recommend.  Thanks.

Lake Del Valle (crown jewel of east bay park district) is great for kayaking and scenery in Livermore nestled in between the hills. There a waterfall 12 miles in on the ohloan trail.

Boat storage look on the other side of altamont pass toward Tracy, Manteca or Lathrop. Allot of people decide on a reservoir like Don Pedro, New Melones & Lake Oroville and store boats there.

If you can, just pony up for a storage space so that you can grab it and go anywhere.  Tons of mountain lakes to get to up highways 88 and 4.

There’s a couple big bays in the bay area.  Lots of kayaking spots.

Thanks.  We'll check into those.  I have hiked at Lake Del Valle.  Beautiful spot.

I use to hang my kayak from the ceiling above my car. I just looped some rope around the ceiling trusses (had to cut a little drywall) at each end of the kayak and tied it off

Yeah, that would be an option if we only had one, but we have 2 kayaks and a canoe.  That's a tough balancing act on top of a car.

If you will have a little bit of garage space you could build a rack out of pvc piping from one of the box stores. I built this one for under $60. It holds my 3 boats and could hold more if stored on their sides. I glued some of the pieces together so it comes apart with only 12 pieces. That makes it nice for loading and unloading the top 2 boats. The bottom boat slides into place. I had the space, so I made this wider than needed, but you could build this for side storage and it would not have to be very much wider than your boats.

Schwa not talking about putting boats on the car, talking about suspending them from the ceiling with rope above the car to store them

We have that here.  We have a pretty cool set of straps that hang from the ceiling  have plastic latches like you'd see on a child safety seat that can store 3 kayaks vertically.  Storage isn't necessarily the issue for the kayaks, it's the trailer.  A lot of the places that we are looking at the trailer would be an issue.  I guess we could find a place where we could store the trailer, and then go get it and take the boats.  But, without the trailer, getting the 3 boats anywhere becomes a bitch regardless of what they're hanging from or stored in.

What I would love is a place to store the boats that is also at a pretty cool place to paddle so we could just go get in them and go instead of moving them.  If it looks like we have a place for the trailer, we may take it, although I think we're gonna sell it before we move.

Around here we have to drive an hour or so to get to some nice flat water lakes that are fun to explore, so that would be no big deal if we had to drive that far to go kayaking and canoeing.

Tomales Bay/Point Reyes area would be nice. Try calling or emailing some the kayak rental places around there.

Thanks.  Will do.
