As I understand it, a "stun grenade" is like a normal grenade in that it is thrown by hand and is typically used in an indoor setting, whereas a "flash bang" is fired from a distance with a 40mm grenade launcher and is used outdoors.
The cops in this town use the flash bangs pretty aggressively. I was at a protest two summers ago and they started firing them straight into the crowd (as opposed to overhead) causing serious injuries in several people.
I was actually shot in the chest once with a live 40mm (high explosive) grenade launched from an m204 launcher at a distance of about six feet. It knocked me out cold. Didn’t explode, which is lucky, because we were in the back of a truck when this happened. Fort Irwin in 1998. Turns out, these things actually have some tiny little gyroscope built in that doesn’t allow it to actually arm until it has spun fifteen revolutions in air, which is about twenty five feet.
If you have ever been in a room where a flash bang or stun grenade has been deployed, it’s a pretty overwhelming thing, and yes it could kill (usually just severely maim) if close enough to the head or vital organs.
Here is a bike helmet with a unexploded flash bang stuck in it from that protest two summers ago when they started shooting them straight into the crowd:
I understand that the chap who was wearing the helmet has sued the city, along with a lady who was badly burned when a round went off on her.
Yeah we all just laughed it off and went and got drunk that night lol. Soldiers generally do pretty dumb things. I probably would’ve been pretty pissed if it went off though.
Minor correction however; it was an M203 rifle mounted launcher.
Yes, people would walk the streets of China minding their own business, when someone would approach and ask "frash bang?" Conservative Chinese women got tired of this and invented gun powder to fend off the hoards of pervs. And here we are today. There's no wiki source for this, but history continuously rewrites itself.

"Flash bang" sounds less
"Flash bang" sounds less frightening. Even though a flash bang blowing right next to you could make you blind and deaf for the rest of your life.
