Cave in California Holds First Evidence of Humans Taking Hallucinogens, Study Says

https://www.sciencealert.com/trippy-californian-rock-art-might-depict-ha...

[Just before going into a hallucinogenic trance, Indigenous Californians who had gathered in a cave likely looked up toward the rocky ceiling, where a pinwheel and big-eyed moth were painted in red.

This mysterious "pinwheel," is likely a depiction of the delicate, white flower of Datura wrightii, a powerful hallucinogen that the Chumash people took not only for ceremonial purposes but also for medicinal and supernatural ones, according to a new study. The moth is likely a species of hawk moth, known for its "loopy" intoxicated flight after slurping up Datura's nectar, the researchers said.

Chewed globs that humans stuck to the cave's ceiling provided more evidence of these ancient trips; these up to 400-year-old lumps, known as quids, contained the mind-altering drugs scopolamine and atropine, which are found in Datura, the researchers said.]

Wow. This cave is pretty much in my backyard, but I've never heard of it. It looks like Wind Wolves Preserve is open, so I'll have to check this out once my semester is over.

Insane Clown Posse graffiti?

what ever happened to Wind Cave?

they were a good band from the area.

Cool stuff.  Is 400 years really considered ancient?

I painted that after the 82 Ventura shows man. 82 ain't that ancient.

I spent about 3 hours yesterday trying to triangulate this location and was unable. It's not on USGS maps nor in any reference atlas. There is a topographic diagram of the exact location out there on researchgate but with no context. If someone had a detailed enough contour map I suppose it would be possible to overlay the diagram and match contours to determine location. I am proficient at land navigation and have done a lot of this kind of thing hunting for petroglyphs and abandoned mines in the past. Best advice I can give is bring a drone to scout. This would be a cool place to find, but sky rock is still higher on my list.

Thought they had evidence of Vikings taking hallucinogenic mushrooms in the 800 ADs

Didn't shamans in Siberia and the Amazon do that shit for millennia?

^ yes of course, but this article only deals with "hard evidence" found in CA (that can be analyzed and dated).

Article doesn't say it hasn't gone on for ages there -- just that they have found old art and drug spitballs -- and that these are probably related.

I wonder if Across the Great Divide still lurks here. Seems like he'd be all over this.
