If you didn't catch this on PBS last night, definitely check it out. They did Larry David and Bernie Sanders. At times it was sad as shit, and others it was funny as hell. Larry David's family history is really whacko.
That's no fun, China>Rider. People want to know about their immediate family.
Due to the Holocaust, I have almost no family tree to follow on my maternal side at all, nor on my paternal grandmother's side. There isn't a whole hell of a lot on my paternal grandfather's side either. I would love to know about my great and great great grandparents, but it would take experts and a show like Finding Your Roots.
Maybe I'll just co-opt Bernie's history. My grandmother was from Galicia, like his was.

Although it might sound cheesy, that Ancestory.com free trial is something to check out. I did and worked the free two weeks for all it was worth, cutting and pasting everything into a Word document, and was actually able to trace some lines back to the 1400s. Its run by the Mormons who are huge into genealogy because they feel its their God given duty to go back in time and be able to baptize all their dead ancestors. While the website is a very good tool, you just have to make sure you cancel before the two weeks is up, which they don't make easy and you have to click through about 20 "are you sure" prompts before they finally release you.

In terms of ancestry all living humans are related, our most recent common ancestor lived as recently as 5,000 years ago, maybe less.
