Favorite Jerrry Garcia Band Show

Forums:

In honor of Jerry.

Of unofficial shows, it's toss up for me between:

8/16/84, Good Skates Roller Ballroom, or 11/4/81, Palace Theater, Albany, NY

What are your favorite Jerry Garcia Band shows in any variation?

6-16-82

I like some of those 1980 Keystone gigs, too.

Poplar Creek 1989 - last show of tour that C Clemons was sitting in, they absolutely blew the doors off in the first set. Jerry doing super aggressive distorted playing all through the set. Let it Rock and Let's Spend the Night Together both WAAAY over the top

First show back after his coma, 10/4/86 at the Stone. That was a time! Intense happiness...

Im looking forward to listening to the shows people are gonna post in this thread. Thanks for creating this one, Bluelight!

Weird, Bluelight. After reading the Montauk thread I was going to ask

you if you went to that Good Skates show. Sounds like a barn burner in

a strange venue.

It's too hard for me to pick one show, but one of the most intense I attended was the

4-30-92 Warfield "riot" show. Just a wild vibe in the air that night which led to some

heavy music. An unforgettable night.

2-13-81 Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ

A question that begs for complex answers...

East Coast (for me):

6/16/82 Music Mountain, South Fallsburg, PA
I: How Sweet It Is, Catfish John, That's What Love Will Make You Do, Valerie, Let It Rock, Deal
II: Roadrunner, Love In The Afternoon, Don't Let Go, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Run For The Roses

^Absolutely epic formative experience.  Like a Mini Woodstock with folks abandoning their vehicles and waking in due to traffic.
Incredible - show but damp with rain falling when JGB finished and Bobby and The Midnites took over.
My memory + the tapes validate the amazingness of this one ....

(Late) Sugaree, They Love Each Other, Love In The Afternoon, It's No Use, Let It Rock, Simple Twist Of Fate, Dear Prudence, Run For The Roses E: Deal

I've tried in vain to find a video of the It's No Use from this amazing show at the Passaic Capitol.  I grew up seeing shows here.
Besides the incredible performance, and all the great songs, my best pal couldn't hold his "L" and much to my surprise - during "It's No Use," he stood up in our 10th row orchestra seats and without saying a word, walked down the center aisle, past the sizeable security goink, hopped up onto the stage and politely patted Garcia on the back.  He was gently ushered to a backstage door and ejected by security.   We found him after the late show in a gyrating tizzy in a dark alley behind the theater.  I asked him WTF was up?  His simple answer was, "It's No Use, so I left..."

Me and my peeps hopped in the car  - Saturday afternoon after Thanksgiving and headed to Binghamton, NY where we bought orchestra tix at the Box Office prior to early (and late) sets.  We literally sat on the Kettle drums in the orchestra pit at Garcia's feet and had our minds blown....

E: Tangled Up In Blue

An incredibly fun one in a goofy amusement park near Wilkes Barre, PA.
The gig took place on a floating theater in the middle of the Amusement Park Lake.
I kid you not - it was 90 degrees at 10 PM and tripping heads were literally doing back flips into the water from the floating docs of the theater.
Garcia was smoking the joint with heavy jams...

West Coast:

My first 4 shows in a row as a new resident of CA:

5/27/87 The Stone, San Francisco, CA
I: How Sweet It Is, They Love Each Other, Forever Young, Run For The Roses, And It Stoned Me, My Sisters And Brothers, Deal
II: The Harder They Come, Simple Twist Of Fate, Evangeline, Think, That Lucky Old Sun, Tangled Up In Blue

5/28/87 The Stone, San Francisco, CA
I: Cats Under The Stars, Mission In The Rain, Think, Let It Rock, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Tangled Up In Blue
II: I'll Take A Melody, Stop That Train, I Shall Be Released, Love In The Afternoon, Crazy Love, That Lucky Old Sun, Midnight Moonlight

On the 27th - my first actual day as a citizen of CA I took Bart from Oakland & the 7 Haight Bus to Haight Street.
Like something out of a Grateful Dead Comic Book I was literally dosed by a Haight Street Head (free of charge).
I wandered into GG Park and got lost amongst the prehistoric ferns - when somebody asked me, "are you going to the shows?"
Having no clue I asked which ones?  I was informed Garcia would be playing the Stone on Broadway and with no idea how far it was from GG Park to
North Beach - I literally walked the 4 miles to Broadway. When I got online to buy a ticket, the guy in front of me was a kid I knew from my elementary school in NJ!
You could, and I did, literally walk up to Jerry and shake his hand in thanks - as the stage was only a foot high!

8/29/87 French's Camp, Eel River, Piercy, CA
I: Deep Elem Blues, I've Been All Around This World, Friend Of The Devil, Trouble In Mind, Little Sadie, Diamond Joe, Spike Driver Blues, Oh Babe It Ain't No Lie, I'm Troubled, Ripple
II: How Sweet It Is, Forever Young, Get Out Of My Life Woman, Run For The Roses, And It Stoned Me, My Sisters And Brothers, Deal
III: The Harder They Come, I Shall Be Released, Think, Evangeline, Gomorrah, Let It Rock, That Lucky Old Sun, Tangled Up In Blue
(JG Acoustic/Electric Band)

I pinch myself every time I think about this show - just as I did when I was there - amazed to be in Humboldt - seeing Acoustic and Electric Jerry during harvest!
This was the dream I had moving west - that life could be this fun and the musc this good!

For me no contest 10/31/92 Grate show Grate vibes. The 92 comeback show!!!

I was at many of the other JGB shows listed above and loved em all but the emotion at The Oakland Colliseum on 10/31/92 was so think you could eat it with a spoon. Jerry was bopping on stage and truly looked happy to be alive and playing music again after the break he took.

First one I went to still stands out sentimentally -- 05/23/81

So grateful I got in at those little Bay Area clubs before Jerry got too big to play them.

Not a particular favorite due to the NY Rage and Sardine Packed Factor - but the Roseland Run in '83 was pretty off the hook performance-wise.

Great photo Hed.

I also loved my first JGB show.

5-26-83   Rochester Auditorium Theater.

Jerry at the Tower was always a good time......................something about that building.........

Jerry at the Tower was always a good time......................something about that building.........

had to say it twice!!!

My first Jerry show was at the Tower in '84. It was Garcia/Kahn acoustic, with Bobby & the Midnights and Steve Morse Band to open (I think?).

Jerry was in horrible shape, and probably played less than 90 minutes over the two sets.

My first JGB was at the Orpheum in SF circa early '89ish? They broke out Let's Spend the Night Together. Good shoe. Stayed with friends at the San Franciscan Hotel across the street. Sketchy sketch!

Caught another run at the Orpheum later that year with Clarence Clemons sit in.

Last ones for me were Easter weekend '95 at the Warfield. I remember a very good Positively 4th Street and He Ain't Give You None. Both surprises.

>>> every warfield show >>>

Good answer,Turtle.

That said, NOTHING ever topped Boston Orpheum 2-15-80 for me. The  After Midnight > Eleanor Rigby Jam > After Midnight  that was later made famous by the Kean College CD release was played here and BLEW OUR MINDS. The Harvard chemistry students selling their purple wares in the men's room certainly enhanced the experience considerably...

http://jerrygarcia.com/show/1980-02-15-orpheum-theater-boston-ma-2/

It was also the first time I ever heard a cassette of a show being played back immediately after the performance as we walked through the Boston Commons...

The (recent release) Milwaukee 1991 show was a fine performance as well as Poplar Creek 1989.

Squaw Valley 1991 was my first time visiting California and the second day was my only acoustic show. Too bad the wind on the mountain messed with the sound.frown

I wish i could remember the date, but a Keystone Palo Alto show that was advertised on the wrong date in the Pink Pages (early form of internet). There were 50 people at the most.  People lined up for the payphone to call friends. Funny little Palo Alto night.

did anybody see this one?

Thats What Love Will Make You Do !!!!        11/23/77 Waterbury Conn.......!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S4kqQbKJfoM   How Sweet It Is

Agree with Turtle on the Warfield shows. Caught about 20 and each one was like wow, an experience you cannot buy.

Most fun was the Halloween '92 show in Oak. GD energy combined with welcome-back-love mixed with Halloween weirdness.

Before my time but if I had to pick a set, 2/29/80 Calderone Hall in fucking Hempstead NY. It's everything JGB should be. Step up. Yes indeed.

Interesting to see that prime JGB comes about ten years after prime GD.

Very good thread with some damn fine links. Thanks

I love...love...love... this one.

The 13 night Broadway JGB / Almost Acoustic run at The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre in 1987 was "Magic"

Not sure if solo Jerry counts as JGB, but 4-10-82 was extra special

Oh yeah, 4/10/82.

I knew it was history in the making that night.  I mean, it was solo Jerry. What else could you ask for?

Another non-band show that was pretty fun was Garcia and Kahn acoustic at South Eugene High School, June 1982. I think it was 6/5 and 6/6, I only went to the first one.

My first JGB show in college. No lying to my parents or asking for permission just dose and go!! I met spanishjam A.K.A. KK at this show.

Also my first show or shows , not sure if early and late show count as 1 or 2 lol....2/29/80 at The Calderone in Hempstead were rippers plus had the Hunter sit in for Tiger Rose-Promentory Rider which was really good.I had no idea what to expect so when he played songs like Dear Prudence and Tangled Up In Blue (favorites of mine by the Beatles & Dylan) I was stoked!

I went to a lot of the shows highlighted here on this thread. Hands down, the Chance shows in Poughkeepsie. Or as Rick said during his opening solo acoustic sets, welcome to Jerry's livingroom.

What up Howie!! I would not have been The Eggman if it was not for you. Hope all is well in your world...The Eggman

I don't think this show was mentioned, I was not there (I was at JGB on the Eel river 8/10/91 though!) but it is an *amazing* show for the time period. 8/13/84 Hampton Beach Casino

5/31/83 "Heat stroke" show at Roseland.

That 93 MSG show with David Murray.

An 80s Felt Forum show that I literally remember no specifics of, except what a great time I had.

When I first read the thread title I thought of the Good Skates show.  The New Haven show with Bobby and the Midnights opening mentioned above was great too! Acoustic with John Kahn in Oswego NY was a great one.

>>>The Good Skates show was actually played on the 18th.

No it wasn't. Jerry was in Chicago opening for Frank Zappa on 8.18.84

I was at a Jerry Garcia Band show on 8/16/84, so was he.
