Father's Day Echo/Alexa Users Advice Please

Forums:

My dad had a stroke a few weeks ago, and he's going to be finishing up his in-patient therapy just in time for Father's Day. I was thinking of getting him a voice remote controlled Echo device so he can listen to books on tape, music, watch TV hands-free. I'm not really sure the echo thing with Alexa is worthwhile or even works the way I think it does? Does anyone here use an echo setup with voice command/remote and how well does it work-for music will it play his music library or just pandora type stuff? My goal is for him to have as much hands-free/voice activated access to his stuff as possible and avoid commercial broadcasting between songs..please advise.

I've been wondering about how your dad is doing, Dise. Is he back home? (I don't know about the hands-free technology) I hope his rehab/therapy are getting him where he wants to be.

I have had one for 3 years now, I love it. It works better if you are a Amazon Prime member for more free books and music. You can can get lots of sports scores, weather movie plots etc. I do get updates every week for new things it can do. I am a light user but still get lots of radio stations. The more you poke around the more fun you have with it. The Jokes, recipes and drinks are a bit outdated but fun in the beginning. If you have wifi you are set to go. It has gone from 10 apps to hundreds. Some people like others don't. I happen to like it. I have the big one first gerneration not the little dot one. You can even listen to the new What a long strange trip it's been for this month's feature book.

J-He's improving but still an in-patient, mom says he's set to go home tomorrow if all goes well. They took him to Sam's Club yesterday as a field trip, he used the cart like a walker and did fine, and took a shower without an assistant this morning.

Thanks for the product review, Bart. My folks aren't exactly electronics savvy, but from what I can see it appears Alexa/echo is easy to set up. I think I'll have to tell them to que the jokes, seems like a good place to start for them and laughter is always a good thing. Looking at electrical outlets, dimmable lights, and a speaker right now. I figure the more dad can do on his own with voice activation the less stress there will be on him and mom, he loves his audio books so being able to call those up without fuxxing with buttons seems like a good thing, too.

After seeng my Alexa, my 80 y/o father got one. He loves it. You can set timers to remind you to do shit, add stuff to shopping lists, all by simply saying, "Alexa..."

Appreciate these comments on Alexa. We spent a weekend with friends recently who had one and we also got the idea to buy one for a father's day gift.

My in-laws have an Apple desktop...they do not have Amazon Prime.

Has anyone checked out the new HomePad device by Apple? Need to research that tonight.

Last minute shoppers, we are!

super creeped out on those devices.

they DO listen...and record. and send that....into the "cloud"...

80 yr old people probably don't give a shit and i could see it being more useful/easy than a computer for them to get info.

I have the Tap. It can't listen in because it's activated by physically pressing the button, not direct voice. It's not as convenient as the Echo, but it comes off the base so it's movable. It's kind of key to be able to bring it outside or into different rooms.

Yeah turts, I hear you, but the likelyhood of the CIA stealing my mom's cole slaw recipe is pretty low.

Lollo, my parents fricken' LOVE amazon prime. I've had a harder time selling them on netflix, they love the pbs dramas and amazon prime video keeps them content. It's not a bad deal if you order a lot of stuff online, you can cancel if you hate it (I have more than once haha) and re-up with no consequences if you want to save money on a rare order with shipping.

I don't know, Willows. The NSA may use his love for Perry Como and fish oil supplementation against him some day.

Dad prefers Dylan to Como, but he does have a "Smokey" Robinson collection..that might set off some triggers...

You know what my father listens to now? The fucking Grateful Dead station on Serus! He calls to tell me about a hot show he heard, or what the hosts were saying about the show. It's like the Twilight Zone!

Cool Dise, good to hear your opinion, thank you.

this might help and explain what you need to us for some of stuff you need to turn the lights on turn the light on and off

Staples use to carry most of the things you would need

no idea about the gizmo, but glad to hear your dad's doing better.

Thanks Bart for the information and links :) . I picked up a few dimmable light bulbs and a set of the mini outlets as well as echo2 and a portable speaker with battery charger. I think that should be a good start. Hopefully it's not too complicated to set up, since I can't be there to do that for them.

Thanks, Hall! I think he's determined to enjoy what's left of his vacation :)
