Farthest You Traveled For A Single Show

Forums:

For one and done shows, 7 hours up to Buffalo for me I guess. Ran into quite a few kind folks at the Mule show. A happy couple, a lady who was pushing her wheelchair bound husband back to the downtown hotel after the show, both smiling ear to ear, drove down 8 hours from Maine. Hope they made it home ok before all this snow n shit.

Philly to Charlotte for 10.23.89.

Philly to Alpine Valley and back for the 3 night run in 89.

Twelve hours, Burlington to Pine Knob in 91, for the 2 shows.

I ended up going to Chicago too, but it wasn't planned that way.

After 11-8, 9, 10 2001 shows...later that month I decided it was worth it to drive to Boston from Kalamazoo to see Phil for just the first night of the Orpheum run Thanksgiving weekend. decided to go Tuesday night at the bar and got on the road. Spur of the moment. i managed to talk a friend of mine into coming along for the ride who wasn't that into the dead but was into the adventure.neither had plans for thanksgiving so we just did it.

Got the keep on growin sandwich. ..but missed the darkstar...they played it at the next show Friday after thanksgiving of course. I had to work friday so we had to get back.  I did all the driving.

It was still worth it

Single show?

Traveled cross country multiple times for multiple shows in multiple places, but the furthest I traveled for the express purpose of seeing a single show was 633 miles (Portland to SF) for a single Furthur NYE show.   Longest distance traveled for the express purpose of seeing a single set of shows was 1,120 miles (Laramie, WY to SF) to see Shoreline shows on a couple of occasions.

The furthermost single show I saw was 5,460 miles from home (Pearl Jam in Krakow Poland), but I was already going to be there and the timing happened to work out.

^If we're talking multi night runs...

I drove to Vegas from Michigan for the 1995 GD shows with some friends

and in April 02 I drove out to see Phil in Denver from Kzoo saw 2 Fillmore and only one Vail (because 2nd night was added later after plans were made and had to be back for work))

My jetta didn't do so well in the mountains but we made it there and back aagain...

We couldn't get Warfield tix they sold out so fast. I was on the ball too and was trying to get tix right when they went on sale.  Got Denver /Vail instead.  Had to wait until sep 03

For a single show, was 1,170 miles (one way) to see the Grateful Dead at Mile High stadium while in college in Ohio. I was given a free ticket so I just had to go.

Nice

Its all coming back to me

In 93 from the thumb, drove out to Giants Stadium.then back.had a job but managed to make some local shows that were close enough to drive back home after (palace,'buffali, buckeye) but later also drove down to Louisville Freedom Hall shows then back . Missed Chicago but back on tour for deer creek> RFK vending grilled cheese and snapples all summer paid for it all.

I just remembered I flew out to vegas In 94 after my semester in college for the shows and my younger brother that lived out there was moving back to mich so I coordinated the whole thing and took some finals early. ..The shows were llife-changing and we drove back across country.

Also...

in summer 08 drove down from Thumb of Michigan to Charlottesville and Myrtle Beach to see Phil with my girlfriend, opting out of the closer show at Rothbury

Furthur

2010 Rochester>Brooklyn from the thumb,

Then later Lewiston&Philly shows (skipping allgood)

2011 Bethel>Jones Beach from the thumb, then later drove down to Greenville>Atlanta

2012 drove to the entire summer tour except the first show out east..instead jumped on tour in Canandaigua

Almost forgot and this one qualifies as a single show. ..from Kzoo to Atlantic City for Furthur spring 2013

Northern NJ to Greensboro, NC 3/31/1991. Stepped in puddle and got WAY too 'wet'. Couldn't make it to 04/01/1991. Thankfully, I had good friends to take care of me...

2more single shows I remembered..more Furthur

Feb 2010

Michigan>Barton Hall

Then a few days later thumb> Buffalo Shea but I went around and not through canada which is how I did it back in 93 its alot faster but in 2010 I didn't want to hassle with going thru Canada.  Took the long way around and boy let me tell you it was snowing.

Way worth it

...and dec 09 thumb> Asbury Park

I've logged some miles

Like Ken, I travelled to Stockholm, Sweden to see the Stones in 2014, but it was the start of a month long trip I'd planned there anyway.

For a single show, I think the longest miles wise was from D.C.>Oakland for the JGB/Kingfish show, Halloween 1986.  I flew my girlfriend out for her birthday.  Jerry was just back playing after his coma and went on first.  I zonked out during Kingfish.

Timewise, the longest trip I took was in the Summer of '85 when I hitchhiked from Eugene out to the coast and down the 101 to Berkeley where I met some friends and caught a ride up to Boreal Ridge for the one-off show. It took two days to get from Eugene to Berkeley.

520 miles each way. Salt Lake to Denver for Bruce. Sept 23, 1985, his birthday. Had tickets for the 22nd but it got sleeted out.

About 300 miles for a Saturday Sam Bush show at the Mangy Moose in Jackson, WY after seeing him here on Wednesday.

Grateful Dead- NYC to William & Mary & back right after the show. Last show I ever taped as Healy was in a piss ass mood that night and kicked our deck off the soundboard.

Philly to Kent Ohio for phish 11.12.94

Philly to Old Orchard Beach Maine for phish  7.3.94

Come to think of it summer 2001 I drove to indy from kzoo for Phil at deer creek..back that night after the show

and summer 02 I  used a bunch of vacation time to see phil and it includes flying out for greekfrost weekend then driving to..

Summerfest in Milwaukee then down to deer creek..back for work then hit hometown show back home that night.

Then down to Blossom and back to kzoo that night

Had to work in the morning. (,  this was early In tour when phil was doing one set  co-billing with Allman Bros

Then later that summer drove down to Hershey Park and Camden from kzoo...and finally down to Fabulous Fox in St. Louis for Jerry's bday show...got on the road that night after the show to get back home.

Same in 2001 from Fox St Louis hit the road after the show and drove all night back to wmich.

Had to get back for work and had to miss 1st night of family reunion at Alpine. But drove after work to and from alpine for the second show.  Still my only time at alpine.

Blew the clutch out on the jetta on my way home but made it cause I got skillz..had to be back for wwork next day baby.

Turtle only one shoe in Germany and at The Gaaarden?

Driving only:

32 hours for the phoenix 94 run - nonstop besides the run-ins with the law.

Otherwise for one shoe?   Probably 6-7 hours from middle of ohio to Toronto to see Phish in 94.

Lots of traveling in 94.

Few more..

GOTV 2002 from kzoo..

In 2003 drove down for the first 2 shows at Tower Upper Darby from kzoo...

In summer '06 after going to Chicago and Indy shows came back to get permission to miss a couple more days of work and with that ..

Drove down to Louisville for that show and hit the road after to get back

For single show,  not several or Tour...

USA GD -- NJ to Tempe AZ for a show at Compton Terrace.  Hitched there and it took longer than I thought.  Meant to see the Long Beach shows prior.

Non GD -- 1990 Frankfurt,  Germany for Pink Floyd.  I was goofing around NL and Germany anyway;  there happened to be a Pink Floyd show one night.

No Thomas they were both for gd tour

I'm not much of a traveler, but I did go from the Bay Area to Las Vegas in 1996 to see Phish at the Aladdin Theater.

A classically trippy Phish show, with Les Claypool, Larry LaLonde, a bunch of Elvis impersonators and other assorted weirdness involved in a very extended encore/3rd set.

"...Las Vegas in 1996 to see Phish at the Aladdin Theater..."

Went to that one also,  from Oregon,  whatever distance that is  from PDX to Vegas  (1100 or so ?) [[Edit -- not that far. Looked itmup; 700-something miles flight distance. ]]

That was actually easy - peasy in terms of logistics.  Plenty of cheap flights from Portland;  might have got the Southwest Air deal with flight/hotel for hardly any $$.

We stayed at the tacky Luxor (black pyramid) which was about the last building that end of the strip back then.  They've since built several other giant tacky buildings out there.

NY to Edwardsville, IL 8/16/80.  Left Friday night around 8 pm, got home Monday morning at 2 am.  Went to work at 7:30.

In 2012, from Oregon to Florida to see Furthur and Allmans, among others, @ Wanee Fest.

Humboldt to Rochester for the War Memorial Garcia Band show on 11-20-91.

(I had to burn a free plane ticket and had no money so it made the best sense).

SF to Maui to see Dylan for my birthday in '98; tiny outdoor amphitheater in the warm

September Maui breeze? Priceless.

Bahrain to London to see the Stones and Neil Young in Hyde Park.

Traveled much further for multiple shows.

Buffalo, for my last Brent show.

University Park, PA>>Santa Monica, CA for the Southwest/Berkeley Summer '81 Tour.

Per Google: 2,586.0 miles.

In a '77 Ford Granada w/3 speed manual transmission

Then back East for the Lehigh/Buffalo/Landover weekend.

Single show, not counting countless cross country trips for tours or multiple shows. One-off, New Paltz to East Troy, WI for the first ever show played at the Alpine Valley 7/11/81. A really nice venue the first time out, no security to speak of, walked into the shed, sat wherever we wanted.

Atlanta>Brooklyn (w/a side trip to PA) to see the Monks Of Doom. They played two nights and we saw both, but we would have made the trip if they'd only played one.

Been to the four corners of continental US for Phish.

San Diego

The Gorge

Tip of Maine for the Went

Big Cypress, FL (20 years ago!?)

Heading to Vegas in Feb to catch Van Morrison for my wife's bday.

(We did Maggie Rodgers in Toronto last year and David Byrne at the Ryman in Nashville the year before for the same reason)

Mozart's Requiem at church in Prague near the St. Charles bridge was pretty tits too.

There was also a foolish trip from philly to eugene Oregon for an awful Jack White show

L.A. to San Fran last Warfield show 83.on a whim.

Good thread!

June 1987, Santana at the Berkeley Greek, we were so amped by the music and dancing (and nothing else!), after the show we hopped in a VW van and drove through the night to Ventura to catch the Sunday GD show.  350 miles each way, thanks for driving, Eric!

September 1997, bombed up to Arcata from Healdsburg (210 miles) at the last minute, arriving just in time to use a friend's front row tickets for Michael Hedges at the Van Duzer theater.  Michael died a few months later, so glad I got to see him one last time.

> Michael Hedges at the Van Duzer theater<

I regret never seeing him

JGB - Seattle to Oakland for 10/3/92 800m one way. Then I drove to Tampa to see Dylan...

JGB - Seattle to Portland ME ..long way

((((tales from the road))))
