Can we talk about how terrible Fake Jerry and the Golden Gate Wingmens cardboard wall of sound is?

If you’ve ever bought a ticket to one of their shows you’re partially responsible for this nonsense.

What an embarrassing time to be a Deadhead.

isn't that the skull & roses festival's cardboard wall of sound?

i don't think you can blame this on fake jerry and his pals.

I’ll give them a little bit of blame for the current state of the dead/jamband scene.

But you’re right.  The festival is to blame for the fake wall.

But in general the blame lies with Deadheads for what we let slide.

I feel like I know what real OG deadheads were trippin on visually man.

You're offended by a Wall of Sound backdrop at a Grateful Dead festival?

Not offended.  Embarrassed.

What a silly thing to be embarrassed by.

How do you feel about the Wooks and Flatbrims?

Boorish oafs that can’t do 3000 push-ups.

You seem a little unhinged.  Maybe you could try punching a pillow.

Thanks Dave.  You’re diagnosis is off though.  You’ll have to forgive me if I don’t take life or grooming advice from you though.  Music stuff’s cool though.

Good to hear.  Keep your sunny side up, and whatnot.

Here is a photo of the second stage. I hope no one finds the tribute to Pig offensive or embarrassing.

They’re actually just brilliant trolls putting that behind JK

That speaker is peeling.

this is wrong on more than one level.

im kind of offended.

i mean, im not dying on this hill or anything, but what a stupid lie of a prop.

As if anyone on that stage deserves a Wall of Sound.

I heard John K's wife has left him and he is now living in a van with a cat named Yoshi.

SHUDDER Me Timbers ! Glad I Was NOT THERE ! S&Rses = Cheese.

A festival at the Ventura County Fairgrounds with Dead music... What a bummer!  With "Real" Melvin Seals playing a Sunday afternoon JGB set 100 yards from the beach...

Pretty sure there are bigger issues than a "fake wall of sound" at a hippy festival at one of the coolest venues in the USA

>>>>>>100 yards from the beach...

Is it it really that close?

>>>>>Pretty sure there are bigger issues than a "fake wall of sound" at a hippy festival at one of the coolest venues in the USA

True.  The 72 hour drum circle is worse.

Wow. Thanks for sharing. Shit cracks me the fuck up

I think it's pretty cheesy. But I can't see how the bands or festival goers could be to blame.

What an embarrassing time to be a Deadhead.

I think it has always been a little bit embarrassing to be a Deadhead.

Ha ha. Good stuff.

I thought it a funny backdrop, I’m not embarrassed. Hoover you need to lay off the vanilla extract.

I saw the Golden Gate Wingmen last month, they played an original I liked, “With God On Our Side”

Reed’s vocals on Estimated really painted a picture, of course Jeff was playing in colors and JK was a waif like translucent vision at times  About a third of the set were Dead tunes

The festival ended on a beautiful upbeat Sunday afternoon and hopefully will become an annual Mecca for Deadheads young and old.

>>>>>>> I saw the Golden Gate Wingmen last month, they played an original I liked, “With God On Our Side”

Yeah, that’s a Bob Dylan song.  He was a pretty prolific songwriter.  Check him out.  I bet you’ll like him.

Personal attacks aren't a part of the Viva spirit Voodoo.

>>>The 72 hour drum circle is worse.

this.

and fake wall of sound is a bit sad, corny, and unnecessary.

72 seconds of a drum circle is enough to want to leave any festival.

It it can be funny sometimes to watch the master wook try to direct all of the other woolkie drummers though.

>>>>>Yeah, that’s a Bob Dylan song

Doh' I thought he introduced it as his

I know good shit when I hear it

Point takin' JR

<<<Point takin'

the opposite of point shavin'?

JK was a waif like translucent vision at times<<

Like . . . Japanimation?

I just don't' get all the JK hate?

I'd bet real money that he could best any of you pathetic losers in a side by side comparison of guitar and vocal skills.

Mando's Mirror

>>>>>>I just don't' get all the JK hate?

There’s a difference between not enjoying and hate.  There’s plenty of great players and vocalists I don’t enjoy.  That’s okay right?  Everybody doesn’t have to love everything.

He’s a pretty terrible songwriter.

The cardboard wall of sound/JK analogy is pretty good.  Unless you think he’s pretty much on par with Garcia.

Better than the million other backdrops we’ve seen..the old tie-dyed tapestry comes to mind...

I saw JK at GAMH last Friday.
While certainly far from incredible - it did not suck, he did not suck, the band did not suck.

There was plenty of great lead playing and singing.

You can "not enjoy," without publicly insulting hard working artists.

i'm ok with the cardboard wall of sound...

I gotta agree with Timmy Hoover on this one. A cardboard fake wall of sound is beyond stupid and ridiculous. It's like Benson's methball junkfest has become the norm.

>>>>>>You can "not enjoy," without publicly insulting hard working artists.

The threads about the backdrop not JK.  You’re making it about that.  I didn’t say a bad word about him until you mentioned “why all the hate?”  He’s not an original player.  It would be hard to argue otherwise.

There’s nothing wrong with saying you don’t enjoy an artist publicly.  Please.

I don’t even “not like him” he’s just low on my list of fake Jerrys.

We publicly insult guitar players all the time when we say they have no soul.

I heard that the cardboard backdrop of the Wall of Sound was a welcome playful sight to many at the Festival.

It was a nod to that past without trying to duplicate it. Kind of fun, and I like it.

“California,

a fake cardboard sound system 100 yards from the burning shore...”

what's that supposed to mean?

I don't really mind the FWOS, but I am a little embarrassed to admit I'm even a 'not-a-real deadhead'...

I just don't' get all the JK hate?

Isn't it more "ick"?

Sing it to the tune of Estimated Prophet, Turtle.

Here's how Furthur paid tribute to the Wall Of Sound at RCMH, which has an incredible screen at the back of the stage.

I was neither embarrassed nor offended.

>>>The threads about the backdrop not JK.  You’re making it about that.  I didn’t say a bad word about him<<<

I don't know Timmy, you kind of opened that can with your original post...

"Can we talk about how terrible Fake Jerry and the Golden Gate Wingmens cardboard wall of sound is"

Maybe you weren't commenting that FJ is a terrible player, but that's a little bit how it reads, especially because your entire original premise for the thread was wrong, since the backdrop isn't JK's or his band's.

As to the OP, for a harmless little backwater festival completely dedicated to the Grateful Dead that backdrop is harmless, and certainly no more embarrassing than all the over-the-top lighting & multi-media shtick the actual band used the last 5 - 10 years of their career.

>>>He’s not an original player.  It would be hard to argue otherwise<<<

I think it's actually pretty easy to argue otherwise, since like all FJ's Kadlecik plays off the cuff/improvises virtually all his solo's & jams, which automatically makes him "original". You can't fake improvisation (well, Holly Bowling has actually proven that you can, but what she does isn't what the Fake Jerry's do).

You can mock tone, technique or approach, and when covering another player's songs you're naturally going to play much of the original player's notes within the structure of the song, but when stretching outside the songs improvised ideas have to be your own, which makes them original.

And for a final word on this thread...

>>>I think it has always been a little bit embarrassing to be a Deadhead<<<

This.

Furthur > DeadCo

and, the only time I was ever embarrassed to be a deadhead was in the 70's when I kept trying to get people to like the Dead when they were not interested and/or capable to do so.

It's been a breeze once I stopped caring what others thought.

smh sad

Tie dye tapestry gives you something to look at.

^^^^ so does the  fugazi Wall of Sound...

^^ where’s that

Cardboard Wall of Sound...It's all just part of the nostalgic trip of dead cover bands and fans of the music. There will likely be more of both. People having a good time doing what they like to do. The black licorice thing still going strong for many.

I'm afraid of heights and being beneath anything very tall, that might fall on my head.

To me, I think I would feel more reassured that the shit isn't going to fall on me, in front of the Paper Mache Wall of Sound then the real one.

Ceci n’est pas une pipe...

The outrage is palpable in this thread.

are you trolling me china rider?

The outrage embarrassment of being known or thought of as a "deadhead" is palpable in this thread.

Learning From Las Vegas

its california bucky.

can't believe there's not mega mansions, condos or a golf course there...yet.

Never mind the negative vibes about back drops. There's something new a brewing check 'er out ........
