JK has the stage presence of a can of paint. Even still, he can go deeper into the songbook than most others are comfortable, and he can play everything basically 100%. so this should be something of an upgrade for JGB and might also get them some bigger venues. I don’t think it’ll last long, but I will probably go out of my way to see this band at least once.
I really liked JGB with Stu and jimmy too. They were super cohesive and the jams were never forced. After Stu broke off to do the dark star orchestra tour, that was basically it for him and JGB.
I love the Jerry Garcia Band, mostly cause I love the catalog that Jerry drew from. Those songs he picked were amazing. That being said, after so many years of hearing Melvin and other bands (including the one my wife was in years ago) do JGB stuff, I really wish they'd expand and find new covers from those R&B catalogs similar to what Jerry originally picked and play it JGB style, and maybe try and find new interesting jams in them.
I think that would be interesting. I'd love to hear "You left the water running" with a nice jam in the middle.
Didn't Melvin and JK have a band called "Melting Pot" that played stuff outside th JGB catalog? Always felt Melvin calling himself "JGB" was a little weak. Dude is a good enough performer that he doesn't need that moniker. If somebody knows what "JGB" means, they are also going to know who Melvin is.
“Armchair critique is totally lame (ahem, PT), and ‘punching down’ is never cool, but you should know this: when you agree to get onstage as support (opening act) for a touring band who are literally risking their lives thousands of miles from home, you are claiming to be peers. You are no longer just a bunch of kids (or moms & dads) on youtube dreaming of making it… you are there.”
Good for JK. This is a good spot for him. He imitates Jerry better than anyone which I know people here hate, but it is what most people want to hear when they go see JGB. Always thought it sucked for him that he was pulled out of DSO because he sounded so much like Jerry and then told not to sound like Jerry. That has always been his thing.

Melvin is damn good, and makes a living - his bands are often impressive, with highs and lows for the lead guitarists - and a good time can be had ( mixing it up would be good, I agree)
idk, i really liked zach... feel like he has an amazing stage presence and clearly feels the music.. not sure i'm a huge fake jerry fan anymore esp after trash talking his opening band a few months ago..
Zach absolutely shreds and it's a shame that he and Melvin have parted ways. But the JK + JGB shows in the past have been pretty ripping as well and this is a good setup, at least for a tour or two.
I used to think that Zach was the mother of all fake Jerrys, but I’m pretty well played out on him. I think that I’ve seen him way too many times acoustic.
No, he can do long jams, and he can definitely rock.. The missing piece is acid. If he dosed he could truly be the #1 Fake Jerry. There’s just that one piece missing.
