Eagles (the band)

No, I do not hate the Eagles. I like many of their songs, their harmonies, melodies, their music. They are unlike the Grateful Dead in many ways, although both bands were influenced by some of the same musical and cultural roots of American music. Good studio band. Live shows not so interesting. They mostly play the hits note for note similar to the recorded versions, without much improv or jamming. I also dislike some of their more commercial stuff in the era after Hotel California, but apppreciate the overall great song writers and musicians in that band, even if some of the band members may appear to be dicks. Imagine that, dicks in bands, writing memoirs!

I always loved the Eagles hits on the radio.

In my early teens, my father told me to listen to a cassette tape that he had received from some unknown (to me) source.  It was a lecture from a Christian evangelical, pointing out how Satan's word is spread through modern music.  The Eagles seemed to be the most evil and the speaker noted that it was the official band of the San Francisco Church of Satan.  I was a bit surprised.  Then he completely lost me when he started going off on John Denver - "Rocky Mountain HIGH" and "Looking for Space" (Sometimes I fly like an eagle, "That's not natural" - or something to that effect).

We do a version of Tequila Sunrise- actually a pretty good tune.

I don't think there are any legitimate reasons to "hate" the Eagles unless one simply embraces hate in general.

There are numerous reasons to not be a fan, or even to hate the fact that some (many) of their songs became so popular that they've been played SO MANY times that one is worn out by hearing them, but IMO that's not a good reason to hate the band. It's not their fault that they were so good at their craft or that they chose to present their live performances as closely to their recordings as possible.

In that light I suppose hating the Eagles is as legitimate as hating Paul McCartney/The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Chuck Berry, Michael Jackson, The Band, etc.

Ultimately I think many people just love to hate, and look for reasons to feed that Jones.

I had the same experience when I was in 8th grade as Johnny did, except I got the talk about the evils of Rock n' Roll live from the youth group leader at this charismatic Episcopal church my mom took me to.  That guy really didn't like the fucking Eagles.  

He told us how they were named after a Carlos Castaneda book, took peyote and dabbled in sorcery.  I thought that sounded cool.  He then went off on many of my favorite bands (Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyster Cult, Black Sabbath, Fleetwood Mac, AC/DC) and encouraged us to burn our records.  I remember that being the first time I thought these people were nuts.

While the Eagles had their biggest success when Joe Walsh joined them for Hotel California, I prefer their work before he joined.  

Greatest band to sing harmony with while alone in the car. What's to hate?

Love the Eagles. An integral part of growing up in the 70s. If you don't get the Eagles you weren't there is all I can say.

Is there a legitimate reason to embrace hate in general?

I don't hate the The Eagles.  I'm just kinda done with 'em.  Blame Classic Rock FM and '80s bar jukeboxes.  I've played Hotel California more (2X with Who Knows?) more than I've listened to it in the last 15-20 years (not counting "captive" situations where I couldn't change a station or hit PLAY).  Oddly enough, I'll let One Of These Nights roll if it comes on the radio.  I like the drum/bass groove and trying to falsetto along with it is always good for a laugh.

Same with The Who for at least a decade (excepting Boris The Spider and My Wife).

And The Wall.  I was always underwhelmed by it, but my kid's time @ School of Rock really drove the last nail on that box.

The Eagles in Oakland was the worst arena show I ever witnessed by a long shot (second place Jethro Tull). Slick album sounding tracks played without the tiniest smidge of energy or really anything that one might consider human. The crowd was even worse. I debated pulling the fire alarm when Walsh donned that yellow hard hat (watch out people, it's the time of the show when we feature wacky Joe!) but decided to just cut our losses and make a hot dash to Luka's to wash the evening from our memories. 

Weird that the Eagles couldn't just be a band instead of some type of Irving Azoff monolithic test-tube creature. Shivers. 

I love Walsh forever, saw his James Gang back in the day. Dug the eagles, till he joined. Hotel California came out and flush that band right down the toilet. I saw the eagles in the 70's kickin ass, then 1980 at the Yale Bowl, no longer were they the sweet ass country rock pickers, they were FM rock heros. I just can't stand em ever since.

Never got too excited about the Eagles. They wrote a few good pop songs pre-Hotel. That's it.
