Bob Dylan Sells Master Recording Rights to Sony Music, Valued Over $200 Million
Bob Dylan has made a deal with Sony Music to sell the rights to his master recordings. According to Billboard, the deal is thought to be valued at over $200 million.
Dylan’s master recordings include 39 studio albums, 16 compilations from the Bootleg Series and many singles. Additionally, if any unreleased material is released in the future, it would also be included. The deal follows the bard’s $300 million publishing deal with Universal in December 2020. (Publishing rights are thought to be more valuable and include the words and music that make up a song while recording rights pertain to individual recordings.)
Dylan signed with Columbia in 1961, which Sony bought in 1988. The 80-year-old has released all of his albums through Columbia.
“Columbia Records and [Sony Music Group Chairman] Rob Stringer have been nothing but good to me for many, many years and a whole lot of records,” Dylan said in a press release. “I’m glad that all my recordings can stay where they belong.”
Despite his massive profits in recent years, Dylan keeps on “mixin’ up the medicine.” Yesterday, he announced the latest leg of his “Never Ending Tour” for Spring 2022. Find tickets here.

So, he'll now be paying royalties for playing "his own" music?!?
I suppose it could be argued that he is now more free to play when/where he pleases, just because, after that $350M catalog sale? Not that he had any trouble basically doing that before anyway.
^If you saw his last tour setlists he probably will pay very little. He performed new songs which I suspect were not in the contract. But I could be wrong.
But who knows if his deal was that he can never perform them again.
?? I only know that he sold his catalog for $350M and more recently the recordings thereof for around $200M? I apologize if I came across to more so "be in the know"....or, less politely, GFY.
