Duane Allman and Aretha Franklin

Forums:

So, I'm in sales which is mostly on the phone, and I become acquainted with the switchboard operators as time goes by, maybe even flirty. So one day at a big resort I'm talking to a woman named Stacie, who's very nice, and I mention I'm going to see a GD cover band tonight (this was last year), and she says "oh, I've seen them", and of course I say "really? where?", and she says "Winterland", and I say "gtfo, when"? She says, in no form a bragging, "I was Gregg Allman's girlfriend at the time".

OK- so now I'm digging away for some incredible dirt and rock history. She was an 18 year old Cali chick who met "Gregory" ("he was just a country bumpkin") while he was trying to make a solo career in LA on the Sunset Strip. Then Duane called and told him to get home that he's got a band together and needs a singer- which is when he packed up and brought Stacie with him. She said they moved into a small place in Daytona Beach with "Mama A", as they called her, with basically NO money, and the rest became history. Gregg asked her to marry him a few times, which she never did, but came back to her many times over the years between his 7 wives. She says "Melissa" is about her, and when she questioned him he told her "nothin' rhymes with Stacie"!

So I began to drag anecdotes out of her that ALL checked out historically, including one when they were in a Mussel Shoals studio when Duane was recording with Aretha. At one point , she was grumping at him that she wanted something played a certain way, and Duane pulled off his guitar and said- "then you play it"! I imagine Duane had a little old-school, deep South cracker in him.

PS She had nothing nice to say about a young Dickey Betts... btw- she's 70 or 71 years old now, and the resort in question is in Sarasota, Fl., where Betts still lives.

Cool story Earl.  From what I've heard, Gregg was quite the ladies man.  She probably made a wise choice not to accept his proposal.

I imagine Gregory had some "options" along the way, if you will. I was fascinated by her tales, though- fer' sher'.

cool story

Good work, Earl, Zone Reporter.

Gregg just showed his tattoo.

>>From what I've heard, Gregg was quite the ladies man.

I met a lawyer who told a story about defending Gregg in a paternity suit. Thing is he got the same woman pregnant twice about five years apart and didn't remember her from the first time.

^ Perhap's I was being a bit presumptuous, as reporter's go, Judit, re: Duane's conviction's.

Here's another YouTube of those nutty kid's:
