DSO at the the Warfield Report & Vids

Forums:

I haven't been VLZ in quite some time but I returned to share some hi-quality Darkstar Orchestra live-vids I cap'd this past weekend
at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco.

Andy Logan, was in the house and loaned Jeff Matson his recently acquired Alligator Fender Strat and '43 Martin D-18.

Darkstar mesmerized us by performing 2/14/70 (Valentine's Day 50 years ago from Fillmore East) and 5/3/72 - Olympia Theater in Paris at the apex of the stellar  '72 tour.

Jerry's Martin sounded mighty fine in the hands of Jeff - alongside Rob Eaton and also for a terrific solo spin by Rob Barraco on Pigpen's version of Katie Mae!  Night one's set list was like some sort of freakish upside down set list with an acoustic sandwich that left my mind feeling like it was in a Grateful Dead Washing Machine of scrambled sonic intensity.  This was far from '80's autopilot format Grateful Dead and a delight to see and hear.

Two drummer - full strength psychedlia and sweet acoustic center of a delicious oreo cookie....

Night two was expansive to say the least but with just one drummer to cover the era - but with Lisa doing very capable Blues Harp coverage of Pig's expressions and key contributions from Donna  - (Slight tangent: I've read that Donna at the actual show was heavily dosed...)

The Alligator strat was literally the star of this show and the tones and intensity were striking, vivid and intense.  I believe this guitar has the sound Jeff Matson's been chasing for more then half of his life and there were a couple of occasions where he approached the mic and stated, "I LOVE THIS GUITAR," and later he held it up like a freakish rock star..... but dang it was fantastically good.

I took advantage of getting to the Warfield early - grabbed a floor seat at the Box office and road the rail all night vid capping for your pleasure - didn't get it all - but got a bunch of good s h i t if you like the DSO....

T

I was at Valentines show and had a better than average time for sure.
Thank you for sharing your vids and insights, Treblemaker.

saw that setlist. jeeezus. that's a lotta music.

they are going to be using one of phil's basses for the sd/la shows but I will be nelson bound to HI....would love to see the wiltern show...

Awesome vids here, thank you!!!

Great to see you again on the 14th.   (Second rail actually)

good energy and love   Glad to be there

Been too long (also nice to see the tree flowing)

Painted, you painted an accurate, loving and sweet picture of an amazing show and experience

JFC they were good   The front was more than tolerable, and many smiles erupted   along with a few leaps and spins as they delivered the goods

Headband pigpen did deliver the goods big time as highlights , as did jeff

They have it together After being together for so long

One thing that struck us driving home was that a replay on Sirius of the Fillmore East dead show (May 3 1970?) after the band was only around for like three years

it was just amazing how together and incomparable they were as babies  we are all so lucky for their gifts and love, commitment and inspiration

and slightly diminished what we had experienced    But GRATEFUL for both

Great to see you posting, T. And thanks for the videos.

Excellent videos. For the life of me, I don't understand why people think Dead and Company are better. I understand the original members are in Dead and Company. In terms of the music, though, this band is far more enjoyable.

Way better, yes

^
100% agree with that.

ymmv

Thanks for sharing.

And

then Phil played tonight in his living room

omfg!
