Donna and Maria JGB>Gloria and Jackie JGB

Forums:

I like it a little more right now but I've only heard a little of later era J&G JGB.

I'm currently listening to Nov/Dec 1977 JGB.

When did Jackie and Gloria join?

1988

I saw both groups, and while Jerry was certainly (IMO) a deeper, more alert player in the '70s, the late era JGB with Melvin, Jackie & Gloria was much better rehearsed and had more of a groove & sound of their own - an actual band.

It seemed to me that immediately after their extended run of shows at the Lunt-Fontanne Theater in NYC in '87 they were more of a unit and less of a loose group jamming, and that group feeling continued for me until the end.

I haven't listened to '94 or '95 JGB at any length, but I can't imagine that the same cohesion could have been present as when David Kemper was in the band? I've always wondered: was there any noticeable change in their sound following his (completely perplexing) dismissal?

Here we go again with my particular ear for drummers.

Since you asked I'll give my opinion, but I'm betting it won't be a prevailing one.

I was never a big fan of Kemper's in Jerry's band. He was too heavy-handed for me, and did the same things in the same places all the time.

He was a good player though and definitely helped create that more cohesive group sound.

But Donny Baldwin was/is a very good drummer as well and was more gentle and I didn't have any problem with the change, but I know many did.

It was a bit more noticeable with Baldwin when Jerry would disappear from the music though; maybe Kemper's stronger playing pushed Jerry to stay awake at times, but for me any significant issues with JGB those last couple of years had far more to do with how Jerry was feeling (how good the stuff was) on a given night than who was playing drums.

i was not a fan of the last drummer.

also, the 'band personnel' chart above is incorrect. Phil played bass in the JGB at least twice. very early eighties.

I was referring to the last time the Dodgers won a championship...

Nice, Lance.

Hall, you really don't understand today's game, do you?

If Shaq was on the current Dodgers they'd never lose a game.

BTW, how was old man Ponty?

lol

Jean Luc was a pretty good show... he's slowed down since I saw him 30 years ago, but then again, so have I, so I appreciated the more subtle part of his game.

And we hurried in when the doors opened and snagged front row seats just in case Shaq showed up and tried to pull a Walton.

Glad to hear Jean Luc Ponty's still sounding good thanks Hall. Gonna try to catch one of his 2 NYC shows @ BB King's. First time I saw him was 2007, so it sounds like I'll def still enjoy (not that there's really any doubt).

As far as vocals in JGB, I only got to see Gloria & Jackie, but I do prefer them when choosing. I do enjoy Donna & Maria too though.

hope you enjoy it, Chuck.

I will say it kind of bugged me that he brought up not one, but two young violinists who played multiple songs and, IMO, were given too many jams considering it wasn't that long of a show to begin with.

How bout some goddam links in this m f ing thread?

Here's Jerry, John, Keith, Donna, Maria and Buzz 3-19-78 Pittsburg

Dave Torbert also subbed on bass on one or two occasions, great player and singer.

i loved kemper

Kemper was awesome with Dylan too.

Add me to the list of Kemper fans, big time.  Obviously Jerry liked his sound too.  Ive heard all the stories about his dismissal but I bet dollars to donuts he dared to suggest Jerry get clean. Just a theory of course.

I LOVE Jackie and Gloria.  True professionals.  I stood in front of them at an "Electric on the Eel" event and blew kisses to them. They winked at me and finally giggled a bit.

I loved that early Fall JGB tour. I think I saw 8 or 9 shows. There were times that all i could think was, 'Holy fuck, this is loud! Why don't the Dead play like this?"

1989 fall JGB.  What a great tour!

This was my show...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDPy-YFt4ms

Dead center right in front of Jerry and locked in the whole show.  Probably my favorite Jerry memory.  I get chills thinking about it.

Loved the Maria/Donna lineup.  Saw a bunch of those at the Keystone, "I'll Be with Thee" was always a standout.

Pretty good one, IMO.  More plausible than being dismissed for suggesting there were "too many mid-tempo tunes".
