the "magic" or the "xfactor" or whatever you want to call it interacts with LSD in a much different way than other psychedelics, and in a different way than LSD interacts with other bands. it's not totally unique to the dead, or even to jambands, but there is something very special that happens when listening to loud rock music with improvised elements played by a group of highly skilled musicians with a very deep musical and personal connection. i have experienced it with various phil/bob groups, tool, phish, nelson band, and JRAD. at a certian point in the show, which usually has to be worked up to, the music just "pops" and unfolds in this incredible way, and something about the unique effects of LSD amplify those feelings and cause a very consistent and repeatable change in the sound to occur.
i have had this experience but to a lesser extent with jazz shows. in some cases, like marc ribot/ceramic dog, for instance, i like the music itself better, but the unique sound and "magic" type experience are much less.
im sure the "magic" could be an experience that is seen as pretty silly by some, but i still experience it regularly and its still the main drive behind my interest in the dead and going to shows. JRAD brings it on the regular. i dont think its some kind of actual magic or supernatural experience, but it is a very very powerful and enjoyable feeling, and it is a very specific set of sounds and feelings that happen at every single show i go to where i drop L and the band and improv are strong. there can be many variables in the experience but the main points are far more repeatable than something would be if it were totally due to the effects of psychedelics.
Dead shows were timed perfectly for eating acid. Drop some LSD when the band hits the stage, the music coincides with the trip. Starts off mellow, then gets kinda groovy by the end of the first set, and then gets really freeky going into Drumz Space when the acid is peaking and you think you may lose it, but then it all comes back, toned down with the Jerry Ballad and Bobby Rocker to bring you back. They had 40 years to dial in the LSD - music dynamic and they did it well.

Dunno 'bout that. The differences between the effects of each dose of L, or of shrooms, or of mescaline are much greater, in my experience, than the differences between those three substances. In other words, set and setting are more important than which of those three you take.
Of course, the timing of the other two can be less convenient.
The big factor was the critical mass. If you can find another band where at least 60% of the audience is on the same ride then it's a good experience. That is a big reason I go check out Phish once a year. My worst experience was Crystal Method, I was not on the same page with the tweekers in that crowd, and it was at the Maritime Hall the night before Folsom Street Fair. Only years of experience got me through that one.

Hell, just about anywhere for me.....water parks are fun, I like to fish and freak too but tying knots are not so fun. Disney World is made for freakers. Scuba diving was great. Jury duty was a blast......

Personally, I always preferred an hour prior to start time. Made sure that you were already on the way by the time the band hit the stage.
"But then you still have 8+ hours to find something to do with your mind, lol. "
That's what after show parties were for.
