Did Dead Base Change Set Lists

Forums:

Did set lists become more varied night to night once Dead Base came out in the 80's and the Dead became aware of how closely it was all being tracked and how it was easily shared?

I see the 70s and early 80s tours as a lot of one-offs, moving from city to city. The more they set up multi-night runs (MSG, Spectrum, Byrne, Shorline, etc) they probably made more of an effort. Plus, a lot less albums to promote.

Doubt it had anything to do with DeadBase, but IMO setlists got more predictable from the 80s into the 90s. They did try to have no repeats in 3 consecutive shows during that time, if that's what you mean.

Before Deadbase there was Dupree's Diamond News.

And before that,

there was Golden Road magazine,

and before that,

The Mikel Newsletters.

And before that...

Who are You ?

Where are You ?

How are You...?

Who fucking cares!! Get a life and move on!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for digging up that Mikel info -- brings back memories... I probably have some of that stuff in a box somewhere along with the Cosmic Wimpout stickers found on every toll booth on the East coast

Broke this out last night

Killer DEW - only bay area version that year - place went NUTS.

Dumped a cheese broccoli egg roll in my lap during the set break. What a night.

DB didn't change jack shit- but it's still nice having an old copy around.

I have that NYE Civic Center Mikel in the Dead.Net story.  Last one I grabbed was the classic Hershey 6/85 show.

RIP

Hershey was a wet one LOL.

The Dead Base guys worked at DEC a company that was the Oracle of it's time. They had access to the best data base technology and computing power at the time. So yes there were set lists before but not easy access to things like last played. I remember coming out of the Landover Ripple encore show and overheard the conversation next to me and the guy was saying that last electric Ripple was blah blah blah I don't even remember, but he not only knew but knew that it wasn't acoustic.

I don't think that kind of detail didn't happen before Dead Base. Oh yeah and the guy walking out was right because I checked my Dead Base in the car when I got back.

I find it interesting more in a larger conversation of how observation changes things. I guess I've been watching to much Devs.

Thanks for the Mikel flashbacks, RRG.

I don't think that kind of detail didn't happen before Dead Base.<<

Are you sure?smiley

>>Are you sure?

No I'm sure it did exist in innie circles. Dead Base made it possible for a dumb teenager in New Hampshire to know too.

Couple more. I remember meeting him in Rochester and Toronto. I thought it was a great idea.

You are welcome Mr. Edwards,

Finding those articles, brought back some nice memories.
