Thanks Much, Noodler!!

I just watched that Scarlet Begonias opener, and damn.

It was really good, especially the jam out of the song. Mayer & the group nailed it.

I don't see anything wrong with any of this, with what this group is doing or why they should be doing it.

For two nights Wrigley Field was full of people of ALL ages, tonight listening to & loving a 15+ minute opening song with gentle, articulate, serious jamming.

Especially in this age of short/no attention span, what's wrong with that?

You don't like the tempos? Fine, but that's on you. 27 years he's been playing the tempos like this. It doesn't make it bad, just different, and really, after 27 years it's not even different... get over it!

And I really don't see Mayer wanting to give this up. He's too good at this music, and where else is he going to get the chance to play improvisational music like this? He still has his 3 - 5 minute pop song career, this isn't getting in the way of that. I think he loves this shit, he has no other outlet for it and will continue to play it.

And BTW, once again.... he is really good at it.

And for someone who was so certain that he would suck at this music, after hearing so many examples of being wrong over these years it's getting less & less difficult for me to admit that I was wrong about him.

Because I was.

Mayer slips into a pentatonic blues scale on non-blues tunes too often for my liking.

Don't like his voice either.

YMMV.

Two fantastic shows, thank you Chicago!

How is Jay Lane's schedule looking for the rest of the tour?   Is he on a retainer?

I'm with surf. The dude is a legit blues guitar player, but the constant riffing feels just so out of place in this music

that and he sings like he's always about to burst into tears at any moment

And I am actually thankful he has brought this music to a whole generation of people who wouldn't have heard it otherwise, it's just not for me

I generally like it and/but while basically agreeing with Lance AND Surf & Bss. It can feel a bit fabricated to me and maybe large-scale marketed to key money-spending segments of concert-goers, etc but they (especially Bobby, Billy, and Mickey) are up there doing it, they clearly don't have to, apparently having a full-on blast, as are the countless people there to enjoy and love it too. We don't have to fight about it but we all know that stern disagreement and friendly, serious argument has always been a part of this scene from it's inception.

"........St Stephen!! The omnipotent Grateful Dead!"

...would some more of 'you people' (lol) be on board if Phil were?

The one thing I will say and completely stand behind is that this band has gelled and developed over time, unlike Furthur, for example, to now regularly deliver some really nice high-wire act musical adventures. Say what you will and if you hate it that's perfectly fine. The Grateful Dead came to the end of their road in 1995 but the music lives on and takes on different players and formations, including whatever Phil is doing as well. Personally, despite all of the new players and such, I think I am out whenever the last remaining member of The Core 4 is out too but that's just me. Cheerz/Peace.

A shameless money grab (Dead$Co) by the band for people who want to pretend that they're seeing the Grateful Dead.

If you're into pretending, this band is for you.

Is it close enough to pretend?

Curious: so what is Phil doing and how is it much different?

To me, it seems like Bob imposes his vision of what the music should be on the music a lot more than Phil does. The result is that a lot of D$C's music sounds flat and lifeless to my ears, while Phil's music sounds fresh and vital. This isn't new though. It's been like this for the last 20+ years.

Makes sense and I get that. Weir does seem really stuck in trying to re-create his golden era of short shorts and screaming, almost regardless of what band he is with.

Now, the flip side of this is that a lot of folks criticize Phil's bands for being unrehearsed, but I think that's where he leaves room for the unexpected to happen.

Cool. As many do not like Mayer's singing voice, I have a hard time getting past Graham's too. We are where we are.

15,000 - 35,000 people a night are going to DeadCo, and 99% are enjoying the music and having a great time. Every single one of those people is a poser that doesn't know good GD music.

Nice shots, Woz!

Thanks! Man, both Chicago and Shoreline shows were killer! had a blast in Chicago, what a fun town!

>Mayer slips into a pentatonic blues scale on non-blues tunes too often for my liking.

same for JK in Further. I like both bands, and followed Further around the S.E one tour and have caught Dead Co once. I would take Further over Dead Co. but I had fun at Dead Co and would go back.

give me Jeff Mattson in either of those bands and the it factor goes up 10 fold.  Jeff is not a box scale player. His leads spiral, pulsate and breath. But beggars can't be choosy

I'm going to agree that if you don't like the tempo you have to get over it, but it hasn't been like this since 95

Hey Now! This is fun - I could probably listen to/watch these for a couple hours straight. Thanks!!

Amazing how packed these shows are and the range of ages in attendance.
A testament to the power of the old GD community and of course the music. All the youngsters excited about seeing their first "Grateful Dead Show" (shhh don't tell them) is a trip.

D&C is great cover band, I was a skeptic but was wrong.   But it is a cover band. And the big difference to me is the one or 2 times I experienced them...no lift off.   Which I do achieve with some Phil and friends music Sometimes.

it's all art and art quality is in the ear of the beholder.  It's like preferring the way one symphony interprets Beethovens music vs another at this point.  To each his/her own.

LOL. One of my friends lost his phone at Wrigley. They found it and got it back to him alongside their kind kick-down! Nice.
