Story
"David is an incredible storyteller and historian of the Grateful Dead, and this book has the pictures to help make those stories come alive!" ~ Jay Blakesberg, March 2022"
I have been a musician since I was kid, a songwriter since i was 15, a Deadhead since I was 18, a journalist/author since I was 22, and a radio producer since I was 30-something. I got interested in photography at an early age, and I got my first real camera for my 21st birthday. When I started writing for music magazines in the mid-1970s, I sold photos along with my interviews and articles.
The book I am proposing here is a collection of photos from the first 13 years of encounters with the Grateful Dead, beginning at the Berkeley Community Theater in August 1972. My Dead-related journalism brought me into contact with the band members and their associates in a great variety of settings.
I published my first book, Playing in the Band: An Oral and Visual Portrait of the Grateful Dead (with Peter Simon), in 1985. I appeared on The KFOG Deadhead Hour to promote the book and later became the host and producer of the show just in time for it to become nationally syndicated. Ironically, becoming a full-time radio producer led to my attending fewer shows and doing a great deal less photography. The most recent images in this collection are from February 1985. (I got back into photography in a major way when digital cameras arrived some years later.)
Some excellent band photos in the video at the link. Looks like this will be another great entry in the GD photo/history book library
