David Byrne Night 1 of new tour

Forums:

I need to transform my notes into something readable and will post more details and thoughts tomorrow. For now, I would like to say that if you don't have a ticket for one of the upcoming shows, sell a kidney, your child, corner the crypto currency scene, cash out your 401k...just figure out a way to see the show. My mind was pretty much blown from the first song and oozed out into the Red Bank night during song three, I Zimbra.

More to come...

Ahhhhhh!

August 11th will be magical!

As luck would have it,  I attended DB tour opening night in beautiful downtown Red Bank.

However,  the man himself politely asked to refrain from photography,  as they are trying to work out the kinks from the presentation.

basie2.jpg

Lobby of Theatre photos are OK.  So above,  the chandelier and merch table below.  I did not see any posters.

20180303_205457.jpg

That one is of the Ceiling,  which has been nicely restored with grant money over the years.

Note:

The photos are not from within the theatre space,  but out in the "Lobby"  where people buy drinks & popcorn and visit the restrooms.

basie1_0.jpg

I like the positive message which the Lobby curators display.

The future's here,  we are It,  etcetera.

You can't tell from the photo above,  but the "Future Lobby"  with metal stands and velvet rope is a flat artistic rendering upon the wall.

Really very clever.  The actual 3D physical Count Basie Theatre carpet takes a journey into the Future Lobby...

basie5.jpg

I really like that carpet pattern.  It is obvious that the Pterodactyl creatures are fighting over the Crowned - Monkey figurines and Opium flowers.
This photo is actually a photo of the physical Carpet pattern.  No shit  !!

So about the actual Concert experience --

It's  a batch of all your favorite New & Old David Byrne compositions,  with an emphasis upon multiple rhythm inputs,  choreography,  theatrical presentation,  synchronized swimming frozen in 2D cookie dough.

Up to 12 performers on the stage,  sometimes not all 12.  I don't want to ruin anyone's  Surprise,  but expect one long set,  not two w/ intermission.

basie3.jpg

Celebratory concert attendees waiting for beverages,  not realizing the Pterodactyls are swarming around their feet...

After a few Fernet Branca on ice,  they think they are cute little seahorses or Lily petals.

set-list? did you like the show stu?

Get to the Freakin Show! It’s was excellent. Only a few new tunes (only played the good ones) Dance yer ass off all night. Some classic heads and most danceable solo stuff. Danced my ass off all night! (Except for 1or2 ballads)

Pretty much Drum and Cowbell Fury !

This tour is gunna be fun!

Do it !

stu lobbying up the thread.

Is there an opener?

No opener

Remember To HYDRATE !!!

really want to hit one of these gigs!  looking forward to your review skitony!

Thanks for the list !  Glad someone got a recording.  I must say, people were very respectful of DB's 'no-photos'  request.  I had a pretty good view from my perch in the balcony,  and it was tempting to snap a pic or two.

Also,  if you're in the orchestra,  some of the choreography and staging might be lost on you.  It's a very visual presentation.

So you've got DB and two co-vocalists / dancers dressed in matching suits that are beige/gray.  The other nine band members are the bassist and guitarist,  keyboards and many percussionists.  DB picks up a Strat or acoustic sometimes (actually they just appear).  Everyone is constantly moving around;   no one is sitting behind a drum kit or rack of keyboards.

The stage space is in constant motion;  there are no monitors,  mic stands,  clutter.  Besides being multi-instrumentalists,  all these people are skilled dancers.

If you can manage to get to one of these small theater shows,  check it out.  You'll be pleasantly surprised.

I saw this in the wee hours of the morning, and it was clear that minds were blown.

The man is bursting with music and creativity.

Thanks plf! Gonna play this on my radio show!!!

Thanks plf! Gonna play this on my radio show!!!

I consider myself one of the lucky ones when it comes to the musical career of David Byrne. From my first Talking Heads show at CBGB in 1976 started my journey. I saw the first expanded band show at the Heatwave Festival in Bowmanville, ON in 1980 before anyone had any idea that TH incorporated a world beat into its music. I saw the Twyla Tharp presentation of The Catherine Wheel. Solo shows…done that.A solo and together paired with Richard Thompson…done that. Singer/songwriter round robin song pull with others…done that.  Hell, I even saw a performance of his collaboration with Fatboy Slim; a musical based on the life of Amelda Marcos, Love Lies Here.

While Mr. Byrne has been known for exploring new musical landscapes and performing paradigms over the years, watching it all unfold showed me that even when seemingly new, each new phase was an extension of previous work. The new simple extended the old.

That’s exactly what I saw last night at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ, an extension of stagecraft and musicianship. For the past decade or so, movement/dancing has played an increasing role in his shows. So, it did not surprise me to get to my seat and see a stage barren except for a chair and a table with a skull on it illuminated with focused white light. At all the edges of the stage besides the front edge, was a curtain of what appeared to be the knotted material used in curtain sashes. Hippie bead curtains without the beads. As the first song continued with Byrne singing to the skull now in his hands, the first showing of his backing band transpired when a male and female pair of backround vocalist/dancers started weave about DB until the end of the song had them sitting on the chair and table the Byrne started at. In a concept immortalized by the Stop Making Sense movie/tour, musicians slowly started entering the stage during the second song. If one was expecting a classic rock band set up, they were disappointed. There was a keyboadist, an electric bass guitar and a guitarist, with the majority of the band being filled with drummers/percussionists. The music was all about the rhythm not the melody and the bass player was a total monster throughout the evening. If one could say there was a lead instrument, it was the bass. Of course up to 6 percussionists behind the bass make for a rather strong embodiment of rhythm.

The first two songs are from Mr. Byrnes new album, America Utopia, as where a number of others in the set last night. Before he started the show, he asked that nobody takes photographs/videos of the show because they hadn’t quite worked out the “kinks” in the production yet. He also said that in a week or so, take all the photos and videos you want.  I had taken two photos before he asked and immediately stopped taking any more. Most of the audience respected his wishes but unfortunately there were a few that didn’t. This wasn’t  some ego thing by some artist who stops photo taking because they simply have the power to, it was a simple request because the production wasn’t quite right yet.

Song three, the Talking Heads song, I Zimbra, was in my opinion, the absolute best arraignment of the song ever performed. The tribal aspects of that song soared with all the percussion. It also was the beginning of the dancing to kick it up a notch. Movement and lights were in full effect and the audience rose to it’s feet and roared it’s appreciation. There wasn’t a person in the house that wasn’t moving. By songs end, the applause was almost deafening and DB seemed moved by the outpouring of praise in the most humble of manners. With barely a pause, he launched into the second only solo performance of Slippery People. With that, the audience went into overdrive. Keep in mind that The Basie holds a little bit over 1300 people. At the end of that song the applause was so loud that I swore I was in Yankee Stadium during the final game of the American League Championship and the Yankees just beat the Red Sox in extra innings with a walk off home run. I could not believe the roar of the crowd. By this moment, I knew I was witnessing something special. I wasn’t wrong.

It is almost hard to focus on the songs/music because the staging of this performance was off the charts. As Disco Stu alluded to above, instrument seeming appeared from nowhere when needed. (Actually the were off stage and handed out to the musicians from the rope curtain. During one song, all the musicians remained behind the curtain but played their instrument in front of the curtain. It was as if disembodied instruments were playing themselves in some sort of Fantasia sequence.

There was some kind of amazingly programmed lighting rig that adapted to all sorts of tasks. Lights were on runners that followed the performers to where they were going while moving. Chances are the choreography was such that the dancers/musicians were following the lights but either way the effect was impressive. During Once in a Lifetime, David Byrne was doing a somewhat spastic pas a duex with a spot that looked like the beam itself was Byrne’s dancing partner, he would bounce off the beam as if it was solid. Seconds later, he was dancing with three beams and it looked like there were now four dancers on stage.

Although I am not sure, it appeared to me that the male background vocalist/dancer was also the choreographer of this production. He had the millisecond before everyone else movement that you see in ensemble work as well as certain snap to his movements that say, “Yeah, I created these moves.” One of the things I found extraordinary was when this male doubled David Byrne’s voice without any counter melody. When he was singing the exact same notes, even when he was across the stage with his back to the audience, he also mimicked Byrne’s movements to a T. I can’t even imagine how much work it took to achieve that level of synchronization.

As shown in the setlist that plf so kindly posted earlier today, songs came from just about every incarnation of David Byrne’s catalog. Almost all of them had something unique in their arrangement for this unique band instrumentation. I only had one musical disappointment during the evening and that was the chorus of Once In A Lifetime. It sounded good but just didn’t rise to the level of the rest of the night. The night went quickly and David Byrne ended the night with a solid cover of Janelle Monáe’s,  Hell You Talmbout. If you aren’t familiar with the original, do yourself a favor and check it out. Byrne’s read doesn’t stray far from the original.

In my original post I suggested you do most anything to get yourself to this show. I would now like to add robbing a bank to the list.

Great review, tony.

sounds like I've waited for the right time to finally catch him live

how was 'I should watch tv'?

that was my favorite song off the love this giant album with st. Vincent and I'm interested to hear how it's been arranged differently.

I just looked at Hult Center seat availability. There are a few seats left. Your review inspired my looking at seats, Tony. It sounds very special.

I doubt you'd regret it, Judit

I can't afford shows right now, but went ahead and paid to see him at the Hult (bucket list and all)....  after reading these reviews, I'm so glad I did, 2nd row mezzanine towards the center, sounds like perfect seats now for the visuals, Woot Woot!

(((Oregon Memorial Day weekend Byrne run)))

it was OK

mind not blown

how was 'I should watch tv'?

that was my favorite song off the love this giant album with st. Vincent and I'm interested to hear how it's been arranged differently.

The arrangement of that song was basically only changed by making it much more percussive sans the horns, except for a few horn keyboard flourishes,

I did miss one thing I wanted to post about in my review. A lot of the staging was ratio based. From the front to the back of the stage there were three zones. From left to right there were three zones. Most of the choreography used groups of 3 and 4 performers moving back and forth, left to right and back again. In media production this is referred to as The Golden Rule or Rule of Thirds. It is aesthetically pleasing to the eye to place subjects on or close to the lines separating the zones. This rule was used over and over last night. Also used was the  Fibonacci sequence variation of The Golden Rule which is a infinitely reducing spiral. Subjects are again placed near or on the spiral line.

I'm not going to go to the show, but I would love to pre/post game with you guys.

I was tied down with HS theater this weekend, so I wasn't able to get down to Red Bank. One of the other dads was raving yesterday about the show, and when we talked percussion, he laid this out for me.

Sad to have missed the opportunity.

Was last night one of the PA shows?  I think Allentown &/or Hershey are tour stops.

Hershey Wednesday night, I have a friend going and just sent her Tony's review.

Just picked up my Boston ticket breaking my no school night shows with a hour drive, but I really want to see this

How long was the show?  did it start on time?

730 - 915

Two new shows to this tour have been added.

Sept. 15th at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, NYC

Sept. 17th at Kings Theatre in Brooklyn, NYC.

Both shows go on sale on Friday March 9th at 10:00am EST

^^^Sounds like it's only the beginning of extended tour. nice!

Im pretty sure he slipped in NJ and said "This is the band all the way through October "

^ I heard him say that also.

As far as the timing,  the one I attended (Red Bank) had an 8 PM start on the ticket,  house lights down at 8:08,  10:28 end time.  About a 2:20 hour and minute length.

No breaks,  so have a pee before the show.  If it says 7:30 on your ticket,  get in your seat by then.

I will not read past Tony's first post until after 8-18...

A few cheap tixx for Hershey Pa.  and Waterbury CT are up there.

Weather's gnarly but if you have the 4WD...

So glad I got portland tickets!  Thanks for the detailed review, ski!  Looking forward to it.

David Byrne on the Colbert show tonight! (Friday)

<<David Byrne has added two New York City dates to the extensive world tour in support of his forthcoming solo record, American Utopia, out this Friday, March 9 via Todomundo/Nonesuch Records; he will also be interviewed and will perform on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert on March 9.>>

So, Forrest Hills site was a pain in the ass and with all the fees they wanted $177 for a seat in a stadium. X'd out and got myself in to see him in a small venue tomorrow night 20 minutes from my house.

Y'all convinced me not to miss this show.  Thank you zoners .....

New album is interesting. A bit like a broadway soundtrack.

Caught the show last night in Waterbury CT.

At the beautiful palace theater.

Crowd on their feet for I Zimbra,

And stayed that way the rest of the night.

Local Hudson Valley performer Simi Stone was chosen as one of the other singers.

Lucky lady.. it's one hell of a tour !!

I knew I better hit this up, while I had the chance.

Last time I saw DB was the Rei momo tour ...

Bottom line....

GTTS.

Glad you caught the tour, RRG.

Got out of the snow and went to Hershey Wednesday night. Good times with 710 & Fafa, ate and drank at Troegs Brewing pre show.

2nd row balcony was a sweet view, however everyone was in their seat for I Zimbra, so we quickly made our way to the orchestra and found a place to shake our bones.

The reviews above are on point, setlist shouldn't change much but I could see that the choreography and lighting will be adjusted for maximum effect.

The world is a better place when David Byrne is making music

Anyone know how it compared to Joan Jett and the Blackhearts at the westbury music fair

I somehow managed to tune into the Colbert show (not a regular watcher) and really enjoyed everything about David Byrne and the two of them interacting.

Yes, I like it when the musical guest gets a talking slot. Here is the Giant Suit Emporium bit, and Jared Kushner the musical.

The David Byrne shoe that I saw tonight will stand up well in stadiums later in the tour.

Rocks show and modern dance show all rolled into one.  All of the 6 drummers on stage MUST have had marching band experience.

5 - 6 Talking Heads tunes were nailed during the 2 hour show. Everyone stood & dances for those tunes but sat for the rest.

Great to see such a big show in a small venue

Sounds like a great show.

Do you know where you saw him?

Forgot about Forest Hills OS.angry

Only time I saw TH was there.

Going to show without the wife, fast food on the drive home. A show with the wife, if in tampa, Columbia Cafe, Hat Tricks, Taco Bus, grouper sandwich at the outdoor cafe by the arena and convention center, and always to cap it off some cornbread at Hablo Taco, they put some pinapple or something in it that makes it pastry like, so mf'n good

dumb ass

David Byrne and crew were at Ulster Performing Arts Center in Kingston, NY Bluelight

Thank you sir.

I'm happy too see that Many Zoners have enjoyed their local small Theatre shows,  from  Wilkes-Barre to Hershey to Connecticut to Kingston.

This DB tour is HUUUUGe,  going International and  big venues all over USA.

Happy I got to catch opening Night,  although the night before they played a Secret rehearsal in Trenton,  NJ,  which nobody invited me to crying

Trenton War Memorial theatre was my first Talking Heads show,  back in 1978.

I'm thinking that rehearsal was at another venue,  but Still....

Same choreographed show, with the same exact songs for a year, like Madonna. Pure genius.

If he spent a little more time on this tour's city's show's uniqueness and less time writing a play about Jared Kushner, ticket holders will be better served in the long run.

The only show that will probably not be scripted is the NYC Randall Island show in July, with St. Vincent that tickets are not selling well for.

Yes! Orlando Disney Theater, new venue that looks tits up, see ya there, onsale friday
