Dave's Picks 29 - 2/26/77

Forums:

It came today, first of the 2019 installments.   smiley

Its excellent

Don't own it, but heard it 4 times last month on XM, who took the time to somehow make it sound real good.

Perfect release, in sequence to what has been released. No?

They put so much work into these releases,  was happy to se a No Brainer get approved.

I suggest they release every soundboard portion of February 1973, in a Mini Box Set

Got mine, about to check it out after TDIGDH.

Enjoy everyone.

Sounds great. I, like many, have listened to this show a *ton* .....back in the early 90s the tape a set 2 stayed in my car.

It's very nice to hear the Morning Dew from 2/27/77 in SBD form. Actually, that was the first thing I listened to.

On the playin' now going deep...

^ Playin > Wheel > Playin  sandwich

Magnificent is the word here, just an outstanding performance by the band and an incredible recording and remastering to boot.  This will be getting a lot of air time.

I watched Dave’s chat about this release.  Some interesting trivia - It was first show of 1977, Terrapin is set one opener and  first time played, no drums in this show.

You could rearrange this first set and have a song list that beats a lot of actual second sets out there.  This show really is two second sets in terms of improvisational quality and quantity.

Sugaree, Mama Tried, They Love Each Other, Estimated Prophet-> Terrapin Station-> Playing in the Band -> The Wheel-> Playing in the Band -> Deal

Encore: Minglewood Blues

The band had spent a lot of time recording the Terrapin Station LP in LA in late '76 and early '77 hence the tightness. The ooziness of that 1976 sound melted away and formed into a prog-rock-like beast

I've listened a couple of times to the clip on dead.net from when it was announced and love it. What a band, what a time!

I've been bored with 77 for years.

Memo to "Dave"   :  Start releasing more 1982

thnxxx

I'll always love the '77 sound.

I moved to SF in Sept. '76, I had seen three shows in June and was frankly a little disappointed with the mellow, soft edged approach that they were using.  The spacey bits were great but there wasn't much punch.  My first Bay Area show was 10/10/76 and I thought that they were getting tighter and the tonality of the band was better, especially Jerry who was now playing the Travis Bean TB-500.  Next up was 12/31/76 and that was another major step in the right direction, and by the time I saw 3/17/77 they were in full sail and cruising at altitude.  It was really interesting observing the coming together of the band and their sound over that nine months.

But if it's 80's you want, I want more '83 and '85.  9/12/85 is begging to be released.

I'm all for more 85, and 80, 81,83 ...and throw in a little more 1979 while we're at it.

I listened to disc 3 yesterday driving back over Mt. Tam from Mill Valley.

The Morning Dew from SB with the mist on the mountain was pretty damn cool.

I agree re: more releases from '81-'85.

Please.

I think that most soundboard masters from the 80s were recorded onto cassette and have mixes that are uneven (compared to reel to reel recordings from the 60s/70s). A common issue with them is that the vocals and keys are loud, Jerry's guitar is not loud enough (a famous example - 7/13/84. They could never release that) There are some that have pretty good mixes, like the recent Boise '83 show.

Ultimately, there is still an entire archive of soundboards to listen to online for free..... it's not like the stuff isn't already out there

Frank- you are correct - there are not enough high quality masters from the early 80's.

The only official release that I know of from 1980 is the Go To Nassau set.

Those shows were recorded for the King Biscuit hour- so I'm guessing there were reel masters done- and it's really good stuff.

Dick's Picks and Dave's Picks are only 2 track master recordings, not multitrack recordings such as Go To Nassau (which is killer).

There was a download series release of 9/3/80 which is a real good shoe.....

The 30 Circles set has an official '80 release, 11/28/80.

Dick said that there were major gaps in the collection for these years as well.

Dick’s Picks 6, 13, 22, 32 and Dave’s Picks 8, 20, 27 are 80’s shows.  Also several official releases like Nassau, Nightfall of Diamonds, Formerly the Warlocks, Crimson White & Indigo, View from the Vault vol 4, Truckin to Buffalo, and probably more.  But yes bring on more 80’s!

I think he meant 1980 specifically.

But I'm often confused.

I did but only bc you mentioned 1980. I did forget about the Fox '80 release. Obviously there are releases from the 80s....that was not the issue

But the Fox release kinda proves my point. The official release is a matrix not just a straight soundboard. There's also cuts in lots of 80s soundboards since they used cassettes for the masters.

The audience recording part of that Fox matrix is really really good (it's in the Fox, natch). Had to fatten up that thin soundboard with true ambience and depth!

THE POINT: Don't expect your favorite 80s show to be released because the sound quality might not be up to snuff. More will be coming. Who knows? Maybe a 7/13/84 matrix

4/21/84!!!!!

But yea, I'm not holding my breath.

I am really enjoying getting these as they are released. A great value.

Watsonville 1983

Random dream Dave's Pick.
