Dave Alvin LIVES! And is still great.

Forums:

Dave Alvin, one of the greatest bar band/honky-tonk/blues-rock guitar players alive is on the road again, with his Guilty Ones and Jimmy Dale Gilmore.

I saw him tonight at the new place in the BA, The Guild, and he/they tore it up.

Dave has quietly overcome cancer in the past year or so, and he's back on the stage again, bringing his great ability to get into your head & heart, after a long time and a lot of trouble.

And he was great.

Big surprise, but even after all his turmoil he was just smoking. If he/they come your way (Ranch Nicasio 6/26, The Chapel SF 6/28, Belly Up Tavern Solana Beach 6/30, Troubadour LA 7/2) make sure to check them out, as who knows when they'll play again.

BTW, Jimmy Dale Gilmore is pretty cool too. While I'd rather it be just Dave to get more of his great songs, JDG brings the classic Willie Nelson style country groove, and for all the Big Lebowski fans out there it's always cool to see him from that.

(A friend I was with tonight is a HUGE Big Lebowski fan and didn't know JDG had an important part in that movie. When I told him what part he played in the movie it made his night even better/Whoop!)

GTTS!

I really hope the window hasn't closed on the possibility of a run of Third Mind shows.

Great to hear. Dave Alvin is a treasure.

Jimmy Dale is a treasure. A multi talented artist with a body of work 50 years deep, a few movies, and multiple Grammy nominations along the way.

It totally chaps my ass when he's relegated to being the "big Lebowski guy".

Now go buy Downey To Lubbock and get your minds right

the man rules. good to hear reports lance. not sure i will catch the show, but he is one of the best californian guitar players of all time. pretty much my favorite.

hows that butterscotch strat!?

caught a show with jimmy dale a few years ago. he walked through the crowd to the stage and warmly patted me on the shoulder with a friendly smile.

Saw them last night in Menlo Park (by the way, 2 blocks for good ole Magoos Pizza Parlor, where on May 5, 1965, the first Warlock gig happened).  a fine rockabilly group called Red Meat opened up last night and did some great Jimmie Rodgers "California Blues" and a Killer "Streets of Baltimore" covered so well by Graham Parsons.  Jimmy and Dave were on.  Mostly tunes from Downey to Lubbock but fine, fine versions of Highway 61 Saw them last night in Menlo Park (by the way, 2 blocks for good ole Magoos Pizza Parlor, where on May 5, 1965, the first Warlock gig happened).  a fine rockabilly group called Red Meat opened up last night and did some great Jimmie Rodgers "California Blues" and a Killer "Streets of Baltimore" covered so well by Graham Parsons.  Jimmy and Dave were on.  Mostly tunes from Downey to Lubbock but fine, fine versions of Highway 61 and Bring It on Home To Me.  2 + hours of rock you don't get often anymore!and Bring It on Home To Me.  2 + hours of rock you don't get often anymore!
