On Monday, June 3, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real shocked fans with the announcement of an extended hiatus for the group, who will disband indefinitely to pursue independent ventures in the future. After more than 15 years of delivering top-tier country rock, sharing stages with some of the genre’s biggest names and contributing to such high-profile projects as 2018’s A Star Is Born–for Nelson wrote and produced music and the band featured onscreen–the dispatch confirms that listeners should not await any further material from the band in its current form.

However, continued collaboration may still be in the cards. In the message to its audience, Nelson and POTR emphasize a continued love of performing together and an intent “to work together again in the future, both individually and as a group.” Further, Nelson will write, record and assume the spotlight as a solo artist, just as bandmates Anthony LoGerfo, Tato Melgar, Corey McCormick and Logan Metz look on to their own independent ventures.

Despite its imminent departure, the band will continue its summer tour itinerary to completion, giving its public one final chance for a fond farewell. Listeners can find Nelson & Promise of the Real at a total of six further gigs in Texas, California and the Mountain West through August 30, including appearances at KHYI’s 28th Annual Texas Music Revolution in McKinney, TX on June 7, Sacramento, Calif.’s Cal Expo on July 25 and the JAS Labor Day Weekend Experience in Aspen, Colo. on August 30. Hmmmm. Jackson Hole in August sounds like a cool spot in summer.

nothing lasts

Just saw Lucas over Memorial Day weekend. He sure sounded like Willie at some points. I thought he was ok (cowboyish country isn't my favorite), but other people I hung with thought it was a special set.

"One of the highlights of the weekend was a special collaborative set between singer-songwriter Lukas Nelson and The Travelin’ McCourys. The fellow nepo-babies joined forces as the band led by Del’s sons Ronnie McCoury and Rob McCoury replaced Nelson’s usual Promise of the Real backing band. Together, the unique pairing turned in acoustic interpretations of Lukas originals, including a healthy amount of cuts from his latest album Sticks and Stones. After plugging the new disc and exploring Lukas’ expansive discography, Lukas and the gang also tipped their hats to country legends Roger Miller, Lefty Frizzell, and Lukas’ father Willie Nelson with a string of classic covers."

In my experience, Lucas Nelson and his band are OK but nothing special, and at least for me they were barely pedestrian (not good enough) as Neil's backing band.

Still, he's got fans, so condolences on your loss Slickrock.

I'm not teary, Lance. Just posting for music fans who might be interested. I've seen them a few times. I dig his energetic bass player. Not a ground breaking group, but I did like his song about getting off the news and social media and heading to your garden. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MPrPtDoaB3s

First time seeing him was back in 2014 in Park City, and I was impressed watching Lukas backstage interact so kindly with a young girl, getting on his knee to go eye to eye. He was very sweet.

They seriously rocked when the were Neil Young's backing band.   Haven't really been too interested otherwise.   Will be seeing Willie & Co. at the Gorge later this year and I imagine Lukas will be there.

Admittedly not a huge POTR fan (I think it's a band that has already run its course), but I am a fan of Lukas.

Unlike some famous rockstar kids, he's put in the work and always let his writing and playing speak for themselves vs getting propped up by pops and expecting fame and income from it.

He's the real deal and I hope he'll be making music for many decades. Excited to see what lies beyond Promise.

>>>I'm not teary, Lance<<<

Apologies if I came across snarky, I just took the "DAMN!" in the thread title to mean you were a big fan.

It's always a bummer when a favorite band goes on the dreaded hiatus.

Sorry I disagree with Lance.

always like potr.

I like them a bunch.  Saw them three times with Neil in Europe.  Their studio stuff is also easy on the ears.  Lukas has real talent so he will be around for a while.
