Not sure on CRB but you won't see the Crowes until Chris parts ways with his gf/manager. I think he found his soulmate. They both come across as assholes, it's a perfect fit.
im sure i would enjoy a GLR show, its hard to dislike any band that features a sizeable fraction of the DNB, but i really dont get why the rest of the DNB feels the need to fill in david's spot with other musicians to create new, semi-DNB type bands/one-off configurations.
nobody will ever be able to fill david's shoes, not even close. that california whatever band with the blond girl singing is downright depressing...as they jam you feel that DNB power starting to build, then right as it seems they are going to blast off, she starts singing again and you become painfully aware that david is missing from the situation, instead of just enjoying what should seem more like a new band than a tired replacement.
there are 2 things that make the DNB one of the greats - david; his perspective, and his songs, andthe second thing is the incredible improvisations/jams. nobody will ever replace david, at least nobody who would be willing to form a band with the rest of the guys...so instead of trying to find people to fill the "david slot", why not just focus on the other thing that makes the DNB great? THE JAMS. no new player is going to get in there and be on the level with these guys...they have an intimate group mind thing going that is tough to break into...even when phil guests, im still left feeling that the magic circle has been broken by adding another musician, no matter how great or how well versed in the psychedelic jam.
i think it would be really, really exiting to see a "davidless nelson band"...just barry, pete, mookie and john, playing instrumental DNB songs, instrumental covers, and huge improvisations, peppered with mookie or pete songs from DNB, and a few new covers that mookie or pete could sing...but mostly jams and instrumental DNB...although as i type it out, im not sure how well that would sell...sure im sure it sounds great to most zoners, but would the masses want to digest such a thing? idk, but i think its worth a try.
but i really dont get why the rest of the DNB feels the need to fill in david's spot with other musicians to create new, semi-DNB type bands/one-off configurations.
Too bad if this is true. I'm not a huge Chris Robinson fan, but he can sing a good rock 'n roll song and the CRB is/was a good bar band. Better some nights than others, but a good roots rock band.
I've not seen the GLRs, but I would imagine that band came out of the Robinson Hootenanny Heroes shows he did at TxR in 2017, where for the second show he used Molo, Sears & Sless.
Personally I wish Robinson would play more shows with the first of those TxR Hootenanny bands that had the guitarist from Earthless and some other fine players. THAT show just ripped from start to finish.
Woah, I didn't hear that about Neal :(, just Adam ! Sounds like a mess in the CRB camp.

If the woman who was with Chris Robinson at TXR on 4/25 is who you are calling Yoko, that's interesting. She was quiet, drank white wine, went where she wanted to, hung out and talked with him while DNB was on. I was nearby and wished they had been quieter...

I didn't even realize that he was onto another Yoko. Dudes got the mojo, can't deny that.
My first experience with Chris was on the Crowes first big tour opening for ZZ Top. Chris got pissed at a security guard and the band walked off the stage. They were fired from the tour at the next stop. He still thinks that HE was the Black Crowes. Rich was just kinda glomming onto him -- though Rich wrote all the songs. No doubt that his vocals, stage presence and general douchery helped bring them to stardom.
I really liked the Black Crowes version with Marc Ford. I’d go see them again if he was with them.
That ZZ Top tour must have been the one where Chris complained from the stage that the tour was being sponsored by Budweiser, which I don’t think went down to well.
Inside sources who cannot be identified due to concerns of retribution are telling me this morning that the animosity in CRB began when Chris stole poster-artist Alan Forbes’ girlfriend (Yoko) away from him. This did not go down well with the Brotherhood.
Alan was instrumental in designing the Black Crowes logo as well as doing the vast majority of the CRB album covers and tour posters. He got jumped coming home one night, went back home with two skull fractures and there were some benefit concerts held to help him out. https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Alan-Forbes-Benefit-San-Francisco-...
So I guess after he got better, Chris stole his girlfriend, Alan split and now the band is done.
Though I would never type or speak 'inside sources...' this sounds about right Bucky.
I played on a gig with Blue Floyd, Mark was supposed to be the guitarist but canceled last minute. Audley flew in, took the loss, filled in & blew away anything Marc could have done. Marc and Chris should start the Band of Dickheads.
Chris Robinson Brotherhood Part Ways with Adam MacDougall, Cancel NYC Show
Earlier today, Chris Robinson Brotherhood canceled their previously announced appearance at New York’s recently reopened Webster Hall, citing “unforeseen scheduling conflicts,” and the band has now confirmed to Jambands.com that keyboardist Adam MacDougall is leaving the band.
“The CRB and Adam MacDougall have parted ways. It was a great run with Adam and we wish him the best,” a statement from the group reads. “We are looking forward to releasing our new studio album, Servants of the Sun, on June 14 and will continue to tour through the end of July. Following which, the band will take the remainder of 2019 off.”
MacDougall, who has ben with the CRB since their inception in 2011, also played with Robinson in The Black Crowes and has been a member of Phil Lesh & Friends in the past. Along with the canceled NYC show, the end-of-2019 break seems to rule out the CRB’s schedule appearance at Virginia’s LOCKN’ Festival in August.
Robinson and company are set to play a show in Hermosa Beach, CA, this Saturday. See the band’s full schedule here.
Inside sources who cannot be identified due to concerns of retribution are telling me this morning that the animosity in CRB began when Chris stole poster-artist Alan Forbes’ girlfriend (Yoko) away from him.
Nobody "steals" somebody from somebody else. Regardless of the relationship, you do not own another, so it can't be stolen. Besides, the person that is supposedly stolen is pretty much gone before someone else comes along.
While I don't begrudge him and appreciate him as a musician, I thought AM was the weak link in CRB ... at least in so far as taking the ensemble "sideways" with his style/tones (someone mentioned theramin above). I'm all for psychedelic exploration, but more times than not he seemed to spin his wheels in the sand vs. propelling the situation into something more meaningful. This is not to say the latter never happened, or that he didn't do his part to make it happen ... it's just that on average, it didn't always work out as well as it could have.
"According to the announcement shared by the festival, CRB will no longer perform due to a “scheduling conflict”, and has been replaced on the event schedule by Midnight North. The band did not make any statement of their own, and has yet to share their plans for replacing MacDougall."
Whoa I didn’t know this about Pete Sears. He played piano on every track except one on Rod Stewart’s killer album “Every Picture Tells a Story”. Wow, I’m impressed!
>>> Crowes ZZ Top - Chris got pissed at a security guard and >>>
I was at that show in New Haven.
That Crowes set was one fucked situation. Was so looking forward to them. A couple overly enthusiastic girls wouldn't return to their seats swooning over the band who just started, and this asshole Coliseum security guard (not NH police) started dragging one away. Chris saw it got right on the mic and said, ' we dont play in places that beat up girls' , and the band walked off. I was in the 10th row and didn't see any beating take place, just a drunk fan being led away. But WTF.
It was like their 1st or 2nd song. I felt chris could have handled it differently.
He could have defused it, and save a fan from being tossed, but instead he was an all about me putz.
As fucking usual. He's such a primadonna asshole.
I got my revenge when his weak ass brotherhood opened for the mule in Kingston years ago.
I heckled him pretty good, calling his band soft and weak, and constantly asking where Rich was.
He also played on country comforts and cut across shortly on Gasoline Alley when rod was on Mercury.
and also legit jammed onstage with Jimi Hendrix (I could count the living ones almost on one hand)
backed freddie king
you know that Whitey Morgan song “bad news”? Pete. Original band he recorded it with was called Stoneground. Off the self titled album.
you know that Alembic “dragon” bass he had out for a while? It was built by Tom Lieber, who originally worked with Doug Irwin. The cocobolo slab it is made from bookmatches tiger. Same stump.
This album represents a triumph of integrity for this journeyman rock & roller (Rod Stewart, Stoneground, and most recently Starship). The whole album is thematized around promoting progressive political and ecological agendas and some of the proceeds will be donated to a wide range of groups working in these areas. The music is mainly in a folk-rock vein, with a stellar cast of supporting musicians, including David Grisman, Jerry Garcia and Mickey Hart, with vocalists Mimi Farina, Holly Near, and Kitty Beethoven helping out his own slightly strained vocals (appealing nonetheless). Andean influences and varied world music styles find their way into this music.
**The sessions are credited for restarting the relationship with Garcia & Grisman that led to their shows and recordings of the early 90's**
Pete Sears had a bit part in a Dracula movie. In 1972, legendary British film studio Hammer Film Productions attempted to revamp its Gothic horror series by transporting Dracula to modern day London in a film called "Dracula A.D. 1972." During one scene, a group of fashionable young people (who later resurrect Dracula in an occult ceremony) throw a party featuring Stoneground with Pete Sears on bass:
Here is a clip from the film of the party scene and Stoneground's groovy music:
Robinow should be great too. He used to play in Howlin Rain. Pete Sears is one of my favorite people on the planet.
Kinda curious how this all went down. Would be great if we got more GLR. I hear that Jackie Greene us now playing guitar for Chris' Faux Crowes Band. Jackie is good on his own, but sucked in TBC.
lets be real here. mcdoogs was and would be now a part time session musician that no one would have heard of without CR. He pretty much sucked in the BC, chunk a funking Wiser Time and other classic Ed keyboard tunes to also unlistenable depths. I'll admit he was pretty good on the piano tunes though. He was entertaining in CRB mostly because of his mannerisms, acting like some keyboard wizard while making guitar solo orgasm faces while playing.
Does anyone really care about him anyway besides bucky?
No...no...no..Portland Ken. While Pete Sears did play bass for Stoneground at a certain point in time, he was not with them when Dracula 1972 was filmed. The bassist in that clip looks nothing like Pete Sears at any age. That is Sal Valentino from the Beau Brummels singing lead though.
no worries, bud. I don't take anything here seriously. I just lol every time at dudes who get riled up by CR. I mean, the guy's been a dick since the late 80s. who cares? take comfort, you're not the only one in this thread.

While I don't begrudge him
While I don't begrudge him and appreciate him as a musician, I thought AM was the weak link in CRB ... at least in so far as taking the ensemble "sideways" with his style/tones (someone mentioned theramin above).

Pete Sears – Watchfire
Pete Sears – Watchfire
Label: Redwood Records (3) – RR-8806
Released: 1988

Here is a clip from the film of the party scene and Stoneground's groovy music:

lets be real here. mcdoogs
lets be real here. mcdoogs was and would be now a part time session musician that no one would have heard of without CR.
