Courageous Stand Against Putin

Putin Critic Alexei Navalny Detained After Landing In Russia

Navalny had spent the previous five months in Germany recovering from a nerve agent attack that he blamed on the Kremlin.

People like Alexi and Pussy Riot have the courage to risk torture and imprisonment standing up to a brutal dictator. Unbelievable. How inspiring.

When calculating his courageousness, I think we need to recall that Putin's goons secreted the toxin in Navalny's underwear in their attack last year.

Courageous, or foolish?

Putin's pretty entrenched. Is "standing up to a brutal dictator" getting him/them anywhere, or will he just get poisoned, or worse, again?

Sometimes it's better to cut & run.

I don't know anything about it, I'm just asking.

Damn, mad respect for his courage...    (pity what's likely to happen to his flesh)

His plane is routed to a different airport so his supporters, some of whom were being arrested there, can't greet him.

They set up a make shift court room near the airport and start a hearing with little notice to hs attorney. He stands to object and at least gets a delay so his attorney can arrive.

He streams from the fucking courtroom (!), asking his supporters to take to the streets. What balls. What courage. https://twitter.com/search?q=Navalny&src=trend_click&vertical=trends

Russia detains Navalny aides and warns over Saturday protests      Media told not to promote pro-Navalny rallies after poisoned Kremlin critic jailed on return to Russia

Russian police have rounded up senior aides to Alexei Navalny before a mass demonstration against Vladimir Putin on Saturday that could influence whether the opposition leader is released or given a long prison term.

Police have arrested Navalny’s press secretary, two lawyers and a top investigator for the opposition politician who helped prepare an investigation into a £1bn palace on the Black Sea they claim was bankrolled by Putin’s friends and state companies. As of Friday, the video has been watched 50m times on YouTube.

Navalny supporters were also arrested in Krasnodar, Kaliningrad, Vladivostok and other cities across Russia, as protest coordinators planned rallies in at least 65 cities and towns in a show of strength that could be the country’s largest demonstrations in years.

I hope it ends up BEING good news. Looks like the authorities are prepping for tomorrow. Courage to the Russian people.

Sorry I missed this.  Much better thread for it.

Tomorrow we'll see actual patriots in action. Hope it doesn't get too hairy for em.

>>>>>Tomorrow we'll see actual patriots in action.

Exactly Ras. These people face so many challenges and risk severe real-life consequences.

I was thinking of them and "Tank Man" while watching the sheeple go after the Capitol. What they would give to have our democracy, and here we have people trying to tear it down.

The anarchists in Portland get no respect, either.

>>>Sometimes it's better to cut & run.

I get your sentiment and the question.  Navalny is intensely passionate about his homeland and his heart belongs in Russia.  I find his steadfast passion to his country and people very inspiring over these years.

The word "patriot" has been overused a lot in the last few years, but it needs to be said that Alexei Navalny is indeed a patriot.

Jailed Kremlin Critic Navalny, On Protest Eve, Says Has No Plans To Commit Suicide

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny said on Friday he wanted it known that he had no plans to commit suicide in prison, as he issued a message of support to his followers on the eve of protests the authorities say are illegal.

Navalny was detained on Sunday after flying home for the first time since being poisoned with what the West says was a military-grade nerve agent that Navalny says was applied to his underpants by state security agents.

The 44-year-old lawyer, in a Moscow prison pending the outcome of four legal matters he describes as trumped up, accuses President Vladimir Putin of ordering his attempted murder. Putin has dismissed that, alleging Navalny is part of a U.S.-backed dirty tricks campaign to discredit him.

Navalny’s allies plan nationwide protests on Saturday to try to force the Kremlin to order his release.

The authorities have opened a criminal case into protest organisers, accused Navalny’s allies of trying to illegally encourage minors to attend, and warned that attendees risk catching COVID-19.

Navalny, in a message on Instagram via his lawyer, said he wanted people to know he was in good physical and mental health.

“Just in case, I am announcing that I don’t plan to either hang myself on a window grill or cut my veins or throat open with a sharpened spoon,” the post said.

“I use the staircase very carefully. They measure my blood pressure every day and it’s like a cosmonaut’s so a sudden heart attack is ruled out. I know for a fact that there are many good people outside my prison and that help will come,” he wrote.

The authorities have made it clear they will crack down on Saturday’s protests.

On Friday, Moscow courts sentenced Navalny’s spokeswoman to nine days in jail, gave another ally 10 days, and fined another 250,000 roubles for what they said were illegal calls to attend the protests.

Navalny supporters outside Moscow were also targeted and Russia said that TikTok and other social media had deleted what it called illegal posts promoting the protests.

Maria Zakharova, a foreign ministry spokeswoman, said on Facebook: “When minors are being invited to (political) meetings do not expect anything good. Because children are dragged into political battles when all other options are not working, which means that the ideologues of this process are ready to do anything to achieve their goals.”

Mannfred posted this video link this morning. Anyone know Russian??? What courage.  https://twitter.com/mediazzzona/status/1352988822263492610

Hey, I just had a Google translate box pop up, so I was able to read a bunch on that twitter feed. Thanks for the link, Mannfred.

my pleasure, I always liked snowball fights.

Some are saying over 1,600 arrested so far. And some said the temps in some areas are minus 50? And they still show up? Holy shit.

These latest protests in Russia are something.   Going on in 60 cities across the country right now and seeing reports that 40,000 came out in St. Petersburg alone.   No amount of online censorship can hide it.   Appears that arresting Navalny may have backfired this time.

Navalny's return seems to be a very strategic move coming as it does just when the US is resetting its relationship with Russia.

4,000 arrested last week, and the people rise again and 4,700 were reported arrested today.

From Huff PO -

The United States urged Russia to release Navalny and criticized the crackdown on protests.

“The U.S. condemns the persistent use of harsh tactics against peaceful protesters and journalists by Russian authorities for a second week straight,” U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said on Twitter.

The Russian Foreign Ministry rejected Blinken’s call as a “crude interference in Russia’s internal affairs” and accused Washington of trying to destabilize the situation in the country by backing the protests.

On Sunday, police detained more than 4,700 people at protests in cities nationwide, according to OVD-Info, a group that monitors political arrests, surpassing some 4,000 detentions at the demonstrations across Russia on Jan. 23.
