The contrast between Phil and Bobby's musical journeys is...

Forums:

stark? odd? predictable? interesting? curious? humorous?... worthy of a Joel Selvin book?

Phil's playing in a wooden paneled basement under florescent lights for an audience of one camera, alongside a bunch of local musicians.

Bobbby's playing in a state of the art concert hall under millions of digitally controlled LEDs for an audience of thousands, alongside a multimillionaire pop star.

(the one recent overlap in the Venn diagram being Oteil)

Jerry sure attracted a diverse salad of bandmates back in his day.

Eight years seems like a very long time ago.

Their journeys were very similar until the one that is 7 1/2 years older with a transplanted liver decided to go into semi-retirement and skip touring with John Meyer.

Looking back, I'm sorry I missed that duo tour.

>>>>.......and skip touring with John Meyer.

I thought Mayo decided to tour with the Dead ( or what's left of them).

Would the band name Leftover Dead be a copyright infringement of Leftover Salmon?

mayer left pop-life

and the way it's been reported how the $ is being split up

I like Left For Dead (winky face)

Phil opened a supper club and gave away grilled cheese.

Bobby stayed out on the road and pushed Cheez-Whiz.

A Mission burrito vs. a 7-11 burrito.

to paraphrase Trump - The Art of the Jam

Both offer the opposite of what each other are doing.

I love seeing Phil at The Warfield or Fillmore because as others have stated he is Phil Fucking Lesh and he can still drop Phil Bombs and regardless of which dishwasher is in the band the music is typically good. I really liked Born Cross Eyed at The Warfield in Jan. and that was a nice show at my favorite venue.

Bobby still brings the Circus to town and now The Circus is in an awesome state of the art venue that allows one to feel trippy without having to dose which is no longer in the cards for me.

It's 2024 this is not going to last many more years and I love the choices they both offer. Pick one and go while you can.

Phil turned down a huge money grab and chose instead to play with youngsters like Bat Dude and Twang Guy.

Phil is the GODDAMN  MAN!!!!   Jus' sayin'..!!

IMO, at heart Bob has always been more of a simple troubadour, just wanting to travel the world with his guitar and sing a song, while Phil has always been more the intrepid explorer, the improvisational mad scientist always searching for the new.

Despite being very different types of musicians they have (almost) always played well together. Phil obviously helped Bob as a player, pushing him (and Jerry to an extent as well) into musical realms he never would have discovered, but I think Bob has also helped Phil, leading him towards a path that was more accessible to the "normal" world.

At this late stage they're obviously on very different paths, but they're both still doing what they love to do, playing live music for audiences, so I say !LONG LIVE! to both of them, because no matter how we all like to endlessly nitpick at every little thing that isn't just exactly the perfect way WE like it, they're both continuing to keep the music and the spirit of the Grateful Dead alive, which in 2024 is far out.

BTW, Terrapin Crossroads was many things, but it was never a supper club.

Just sayin', in case MikeW is lurking.

Nowadays there is no difference.  They are both cooked and unlistenable.

The contrast between Phil and Bobby's musical journeys is..

... the sound of Phil's instrument never puts me in mind of some poor ungulate after the Komodo dragon has started chowing down on it.

^^^that's about right

bobby is a libra. the og pretty boy of the band. he tells a nice story, knows how to sling his gitar just so, while also not being the brightest bulb or deepest thinker

Phil, piscean that he is, represented the soul of the band. started out as a geek on a trombone with visions of scoring orchestral pieces, and took the leftest turn into psychedelia and, even more than pairing with Jer musically, (leo heart of the band because duh, lol) i can only imagine the dawn chasing convos they had back in the acid test and beyond days.

also and as usual
