"In 1492, Columbus got us a day off school."
Aside from not getting any mail, is anybody doing anything special for Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day? Defacing statutes? Going to a pow wow? Watching Indians square off against Italian-Americans (that happened in Denver a while back)?
Although it sure sucked for the locals, it really was a momentous day and kicked off the Columbian Exchange - the largest movement of people (including lots of enslaved folks), animals, and things in human history. If anyone hasn't read it, I would highly recommend the book "Guns, Germs, and Steel" which explains how the respective geographic layouts of the Americas and Eurasia insured that the Europeans would come out on top in the clash of civilizations.
I understand its also Canadian Thanksgiving, so happy Thanksgiving to folks up there.
