They probably saw how restaurants are already opening in other parts of the country and said "fuck it, its mother's day, let's go out to eat."
My mom decided not to deal with the crowds flocking back to restaurants in Florida yesterday and moved her mother's day dinner to this evening. They are going to a place out on the beach with outdoor seating.
My take on it is - Flag waving patriots take a stand for freedom. The business has signs up alluding to their "tea party" or "don't tread on me" stance. Fine. But Holy Covid, Batman, it's so selfish to risk exposure and then take it all over exposing others. It's just entitled and selfish. Just like their dear leader. So now I understand. We're so screwed.
As for me, I'm 66 and reasonably healthy. Seems I have two choices: 1) find a right wing wacko crowd and buy some food and cocktails, or 2) wait for a vaccine. At my age, getting older before I catch this seems like a bad plan.
when do we cut our losses and reopen? im cool w the lockdown measures now, and even a ways into the future, but i dont think its unreasonable to discuss the possibility of opening without a treatment or vaccine, in the event that there isnt one at all.
if there is not going to be a treatment or vaccine, when do we just move on with life and accept that more people die now? or do we change our entire lives and culture forever to avoid a very slim chance of dying from an infectious disease that is very manageable for the vast majority of people who catch it?
if we could just have this discussion and say "ok, in 1 year we will take the fatalistic approach if there is no treatment or vaccine", or whenever thinkers and community leaders around the country find appropriate, i think alot of folks would be more accepting of the lockdowns - at this point it feels futile in that there may be no tangible end goal. at least having a timeframe to look towards reopening with the fatalistic "i guess more people die now"/herd immunity approach as a last resort would give people some kind of reopening to look forward to.

Eddie, I heard that some young people are holding "Coronavirus parties" where the guests of honor are people with active infections and the goal of the other attendees is to catch the virus, be done with it, and then be immune and not have to worry about travel restrictions, wearing masks, etc.. I don't know where you can find one of these events and at age 66, you might be pushing it, but maybe some of your college age relatives might know.
I say we have lock downs until the people who are risking their lives in hospitals every day say it's OK to stop. Or maybe once you can walk into a store and buy some Purell. Or how about when we have the kind of testing and contact tracing that is happening in the Whitehouse right now.

You mean they are going against the absolute wisdom of the CDC, WHO and our brilliant government officials?
They will all be dead by morning.
