Chicken Of The Sea == Hüsky...

Forums:

Poor Hüsky.  He's scared of the Ocean.

I took  H.I.M. to the Dog Beach in Asbury yesterday.  It's the Northernmost stretch of AP's  public beach and Dogs are allowed,  on or off leash after 6 PM.  Many other Dogs were there enjoying the sand & surf,  so we waded in a few yards before he sketched out.  I picked H.I.M. up and carried him back in,  but he just would not take to the Oceanic life.  Sat firmly in the sand and wouldn't budge. Stubborn Hüsky !!

Then he slipped his collar and ran through the sand, past the "No Dogs Allowed Beyond"  signs.  I gave chase and eventually nabbed H.I.M.  but he has Wave anxiety,  so no more Ocean for a while.

I tried explaining,  "Look at your Labrador cousins over there,  having a Blast fetching stuff in the Surf !!" but he was having no part.  Too bad; he likes swimming in creeks, rivers, lakes & canals.  Good way to cool down in Summer.  He's been in the Bay, so it's not salt water fear.  I guess it's the waves.

That one is not the Atlantic Ocean,  but rather one of the canals near New Hope / Lambertville / Washington's Crossing.
Obviously,  he likes to go for a Swim.

My goal is still teaching H.I.M. how to ride a Surfboard.  Biggest obstacle is overcoming Ocean Fear.  He does not need a wetsuit.

His thick fluffy coat makes H.I.M.  impervious to cold temperatures,  although unlike the Labrador,  his coat is not as Oily and waterproof.  But Labs are more stinky and need to bathe more often.  Hüsky is a clean,  hypo-allergenic Dog.

When I look at H.I.M., I instantly think "Wolf". He's beautiful.

Fark,

He has similar coat colors as Canadian Timber Wolf.  Most of the Huskies I see are Black & White or Orange & White.  There's a Malamute w/ identical colors at Dog Park.

However,  the genetics are very different,  and Siberians are bred for Domestic qualities.  Great baby-sitters and working Dawgs.  Wolves will not thrive on a Kibble diet.  They eat rare or raw Cattle, Fish, Poultry or Pig.  I give my domestic Hüsky some of that stuff,  but generally added with the Grain-Free kibble.  So I'm happy that the fancy dry-food is full of vitamins & minerals,  but a few chunks of actual Meat mixed up with that makes for a balanced diet.

Anyway,  Siberian Huskies and Wolves have a different lineage and genetic profile.  They look similar,  but Wolves will get sick on Alpo kibble.

There's a Wolf-Rescue place not far from me,  and I've met the owners.  Have not visited yet.

DS ~ I am not sure if you aware of Yappy Hour at The Wonderbar. My guess is that H.I.M. might find a good support group there to help him with his adversion to waves...and you can get a cold one during his meeting.
