Hell yeah, man. I don't know Antibes, but I know that I should. Mingus and Dolphy were so well-matched.
I'm a really big Clifford Jordan fan, too, so that '64 band that he took to Europe is my favorite period. This is the same band, while on tour in Switzerland:
You guys should spend more time talking about people who are still sucking wind.
I'm thinking about seeing the Willy Jones III Quintet tomorrow. Jones is a killer drummer but I'm not sure if I've seen him before or not.
I am seeing the Kronos Quartet with Zakir Hussain joining them this Thursday in SF, which should be a full melt, and I'm seeing the excellent Vijay Iyer Trio in Half Moon Bay next Sunday.
Legends & recordings are great, but as always, to really "get it" you have to...
I consider myself to be amazingly lucky that I got to see Buddy as many times as I did.
But since video clips never fully satisfy or tell the true tale, especially from a big band with a power drummer like Buddy Rich, I get my live kicks by going to see this guy as often as I can...
The great Tommy Igoe and his band play about once a month at Yoshi's in Oakland, and also other places in the Bay Area (and in New York occasionally too). I just saw them this past week doing all Buddy & Basie songs. Needless to say I was glad to be in the room, and it got me on a Buddy kick.
According to Mingus's liner notes, the title song is a ten-minute tone poem, depicting the rise of man from his hominid roots (Pithecanthropus erectus) to an eventual downfall due to "his own failure to realize the inevitable emancipation of those he sought to enslave, and his greed in attempting to stand on a false security." The song's title translates into "Upright Ape-Man", which holds a dual meaning with "upright" referring to Mingus' bass.

Lance, are you familiar with Shabaka Hutchings? He just signed with Impulse! and is finally touring the US with his band the Sons of Kemet.
I like artists who inject something of a bit of social consciousness into their work.
