Carlos Santana

Forums:

Seeing Carlos and his Santana band tonight at the Memorial Coliseum.   Haven't seen him since the Taste of Chicago in '94 and it was the one of the best shows I saw that whole summer long.   I assume his set lists are more Supernatural heavy these days.

I still love the story about how young Carlos got his first big break when Bill Graham personally caught him sneaking into a third story window at the Fillmore during an early Grateful Dead show (having shimmied up a downspout) and was so impressed by the kid's efforts to see live music, that he gave him a broom and a job and the rest is history.

Have a blast. 94 is a while, I think '97 for me.

He's on my wish list.

sneaking in for a CREAM show - not the Dead .    I woulda snuck in too

Should be a great show---   Toussaint L'Overture . . . . .

It's no coincidence his last name starts with Santa.  The gift that keeps on giving.

wish he would tour with the  Santana IV band

Well, Santana still brings it.  Show smoked.   Carlos and his eight piece band of young players started off doing all the Woodstock and Classic Rock stuff with the second half of the show heavy on the Supernatural material.  Most of the songs had a good amount of sick jams.  Some of the best songs I didn't recognize at all.   About a quarter of the show was sung in Spanish with hard driving polyrhythmic Latin grooves all night.  Carlos is still an amazing guitar player.   He has toned down the whole mystical stage banter somewhat since the last time I saw him, but the guy does give off some genuine heady vibes and gets away with a fair amount talk of universal love and joy without sounding hokey.

They played two hours straight through plus a 24 minute encore, which kind of dragged on and ended up being the weakest part of the whole night.  Seemed like the were phoning it in by that point and they could have called it good with just one quick, strong number to cap off what was otherwise one of the very best shows I have seen in a while.

Too busy dancing to take many pictures, but did snap a couple:

It sure was.  Lately, it seems that people at most shows are generally sticking to vape pens and edibles, but lots of good ole flower was being burned at the Santana show the other night.  Carlos even mentioned how good it smelled.

I had to blow off Eugene and Memorial- I'm sure it was a great show- always is.

Caught him last summer in Utah

Thanks for posting that set list.  I was wondering about many of the songs that were played.
