Careful Feeding Duck Liver Pâté to Your Dogs...

Forums:

So normally Hüsky likes to sleep late.  If I get up at 7AM,  he might lounge until 9 or 10.  Pretty lazy for a 'Working Dog'.  He sleeps in his crate,  one of the sturdy metal kind with a cushy dog bed and some old quilts.  He likes it in there;  it's cozy.

About 6 AM today I hear 'bonk thump thump'  which is the Dawg bumping the door with his snout.  Not the crate door but the bedroom door.   It opens 'in' but there's no latch;  he's figured out how to maneuver it open.  Anyway if he's up that early,  it means he really  has to go.  I brought him downstairs and outside. Sure enough he had to let loose a runny dump. Very unusual for this dog.

Now I'm pretty conscious of the hound's dietary input and 'toilet' habits.  His food is pretty consistent:  high-protein kibble and grain-free canned food,  raw meaty bones a few times per week.  Right now his kibble is 'Solid Gold' and 'Nulo Medal Series'  which are good quality products,  grain-free,  no 'by-products' or other BS.  The canned stuff is 'Simply Nourish',  made in USA,  no krap filler or by-products.  This one is 'Seasonal Beef and Vegetable Stew'.  I got a few cases of it when he tried and liked it.

When I feed raw meat & bones,  it's usually Turkey Leg,  Chicken Wings,  Lamb Ribs.  Anyway,  it's all pretty consistent over time.  So an unusual digestive incident got me wondering:  what caused this anomaly ??

I'm thinking it was the Duck Mousse with Truffles.  I was having a late-nite snack of the stuff,  a few Rye Triscuits with a dab of the Pâté.  He was interested,  so I gave H.I.M. a couple half-crackers with just a taste of Pâté.  Not a bowlful,  just a taste.

That's the label right there.  They don't list that particular product on their website;  maybe it's 'export-only'.  But I've been eating the stuff and it tastes great, no digestive upset.

So my best guess is that Hüsky is allergic to Duck Liver,  or Truffles.

The production of foie gras is the singularly most heinous act of food production out there. It is possible that the Husky did a Google search and became sick from what was learned.

thanks stu

my old guy only eats pate these days

good lord

Do you shave his balls?

let's stay on topic guys

we don't want to upset the old people

LOMAOLOODELOL

I Make some awesome Foie gras, feeding it to a dog is an insult, gavage of ducks and geese is a very old tradition in France ,and it is true the birds eat until their livers explode ,almost, that gives the liver an amazing texture and unique flavour.I for one cant stand Liver, but Foie Gras is not just liver...it is simply delicious if done right, most  duck and geese farmers in France have high respect for these animals, almost like a Lobster fisherman in Maine..However, Foie Gras, like lobster is intentse l y rich, you probably shouldnt give it to your pooche

I agree with you Thomas!  Shouldn’t feed delicious foie gras pate (or mousse) to a dog.  It’s “donner de la confiture à des cochons”...especially if it is made with truffles.

I didn't feed H.I.M. a whole bunch of the stuff,  just a tiny taste.  I'm thinking Truffle allergy,  as some of his Dog Food over time has contained Duck with no adverse effects.  Anyway he's fine;  ate a couple bowls of Kibble today.

Glad all is returning to normal
