Cancelled: Wavy Gravy Birthday Celebration w/ DNB + Zero

Forums:

This news crushed my Friday. :(

Just received email that the Wavy Gravy Birthday celebration has been cancelled for pandemic reasons... and tickets will be refunded.

I was just about to book a plane ticket, glad my spidey sense made me procrastinate.

Replacement show is in play, same day, different venue, w/o DNB... who can find out of any DNB members might be joining as special guests?

TOTALLY LAME AND UNNECESSARY BUZZ KILL

I hope you're yelling at the pandemic, not me. ;)

Weird how there is a pandemic in berkeley but not one in Napa.

Maybe the show was undersold???

I didn't receive an email.  Perhaps because I bought my ticket at the box office...

Larry Brilliant canceled this because h's concerned about bad PR for SEVA if there is a COVID outbreak.

They didn't sell enough tickets so UC Theater pulled the plug and now it is in a significantly smaller room up in Napa.

You can buy tickets to the shows at UC Theater for this Saturday night or the Friday or Tuesday shows immediately prior and after the Wavy gig as well.

There's no COVID news here, just not enough Zero/DNB fans buying tickets.

I was very excited for this gig but not excited enough to drive to/from Napa on a Sunday.  Have fun kids.

^^^ SEVA is getting bad PR either way with this decision.

Regarding the undersold angle, I have to say that this event was not well promoted at all.

Well, no idea about the PR hit but I assume there are at least a few other folks like myself who were going to contribute to SEVA by attending a gig in Berkeley who will pass on traveling to/from Napa.

Well done, Larry!  Move the gig to a place that is nearly impossible to travel to and from via public transportation on a Sunday evening.

I guess fossil fuels and less tickets sold for a SEVA benefit are trivial notions compared to having to show your vaccination card before entry. Very progressive, sir!

.... and the Napa event is not a SEVA event...

Yeah, it's an hour and 15 minutes from my house and that's about 45 minutes farther than I am willing to drive to a show these days. Whatever the reason for the cancellation, I am sad and disappointed.  In In any event, I hope Wavy has a great birthday!

.... and the Napa event is not a SEVA event...

It's not and I'm sure ticket sales was not the reason for cancelation.

So SEVA pulled the plug on the big benefit show two weeks before show time because of the fear of a COVID super spreader event?

And now Zero is having their own gig to celebrate Wavy Gravy's birthday (with no SEVA affiliation) at a venue less than half the size of the UC Theater and DNB is no longer on the bill.

What a mess.  Has there ever been a Wavy Gravy birthday party that wasn't a SEVA benefit?

Even among the annals of bizarre music booking this is particularly weird.

And, perish the thought, but if the show turns out to be a covid spreading event - at Wavy Gravy's birthday party - I'd think with Wavy as the CO-FOUNDER of SEVA....I'm not sure the bad PR would be avoided?  So, bad PR, no money for SEVA, and a lesser show without DNB.

What a mess.

Has there ever been a Wavy Gravy birthday party that wasn't a SEVA benefit?

No

And now Zero is having their own gig to celebrate Wavy Gravy's birthday (with no SEVA affiliation) at a venue less than half the size of the UC Theater and DNB is no longer on the bill.

In a venue far from where most of the people attending the UC theatre event live. truly bizarre.

With all the cancellations and postponements in the last few years I'm getting close to being done with buying tickets for anything until the day before LOL!

Zero is playing Crystal Bay the night prior, so their manager evidently acted quickly to find them another venue in the Bay Area.

Agree that the choice of venue location could have been better thought through -- hotel prices there are another barrier to going if you're traveling from outside the Bay Area.

Camping in Napa? Is that a thing? ;)

Sounds like Wavy's birthday party will be without Wavy?

Seems like the better play would have been to postpone the event, move it outdoors, and celebrate Wavy with Zero/DNB and generate a bunch of money for SEVA.

Instead, a Zero gig in Napa celebrating Wavy without Wavy or any charitable donation.  So weird.

why not reschedule to an outdoor venue?!

We live in strange times....

Has it occurred to anyone that there may be musicians who are unable to play due to illness... thus no reschedule of the full lineup?

I haven't heard, but that could be a factor.

SEVA isn't getting bad press. Yes its outdoors but Wavy is 86 and many of the attendees are older in high risk demographics.  Assuming this is the true reason for the cancelation, hopefully, Jah Willing, a public celebration for Hugh Romney can happen this summer!

It could be any number of things. Personally I'm just bummed that this pandemic is still dragging on and on and on.....

David Nelson was scheduled to play a house concert today, the host reported that he needed to cancel  due to a fall

(not Covid)

Not a fall. He has been hurting for weeks.

Hmm. I must've misunderstood the post. So he's still recovering from a previous fall.. 'spill' and not a recent one?

whatever the cause of the cancellation, I hope he heals up soon

If Dr. Larry Brilliant has concerns about the safety of the event, I'd 100% take his advice. The man had a hand in eradicating smallpox, it's not like he's some dumbass promoter. Is the new event even affiliated with the canceled one? It kind of sounds like if SEVA isn't connected that it is NOT.

Larry Brilliant is brilliant (and compassionate). I would 100% take his advice, too.

For anyone thinking on the Zero show at Crystal Bay, know that Achilles Wheel + Dead Winter Carpenters had to postpone a date there... now it happens on 5/13, the day before Zero!

Has anyone heard about the refund yet? I called the theater yesterday, and they have a recorded message that says to send them an email. I did that, but haven't heard back yet. And there's nothing on the theater's web site about refunds for this show.

I stopped by the box office and staff confirmed that my refund would show up on my credit card statement.   Now I need to figure out how to log on to my account  (I know, I know...)

 I haven't heard a thing.

**THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED**Please refer to your purchasing email for refund information

My conformation says nothing about refunds...

Why don't we just celebrate Wavy and Seva both in the comfort of our homes?

^^^yuk, I'm so sick of staying at home watching streams by myself -- need that live music energy!

i received this email from UC Theatre regarding the cancellation and refund:

vibes for david

LLOLLO, I got that email too, but it doesn't really say anything substantial.

>>>I'm so sick of staying at home watching streams by myself -- need that live music energy!

LLOLLO, if you're still looking for a show that night (May 15th), I have a couple of extra tickets for Steve Hackett at the Oakland Fox I can offer you (no charge)... they're pretty good orchestra seats with good sight lines (on the aisle).  I was able to get some seats in the Pit a few rows closer, so I don't need these.

If you're not familiar, Steve Hackett is the guitar player from Genesis in their 70's heyday (with Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Tony Banks, etc).  I've been seeing his band for years and they really do old Genesis music justice.  Yeah, it's proggy, and some of the songs are long, but since I seem to remember you liking the Phish show last year, I think you might also like this, specifically played live.

Hit me up at: concerthall at yahoo dot com if you're interested in going!

Hey Googly!  Thanks for the ticket offer, sounds interesting.(and yes that Phish show was amazing!)... but I'm already planning a little Zero roadtrip tour..... I intend to be in Napa on 5/15 for Zero + what seems to be DNB lite and / or special guests.

Hope that refund happens soon!

This is likely my last opportunity to work remotely for a week in the Bay Area for awhile, so taking full advantage of it.

Crystal Bay (Achilles Wheel, Dead Winter Carpenters, Zero over 2 nights) > Napa (Zero/DNB-lite/?)  > SF  (if I can find tix for Taj Mahal + Ry Cooder)

Zoners don't seem to be big Zero enthusiasts, ...(and I've been dissapointed with certain Steve Kimock lineups over the years) but the show I saw in Petaluma last fall made me a fan again... and ya'll already know that I love my road trips, solo or not.

>Zoners don't seem to be big Zero enthusiasts<

Chut UP  I don't know about that...

^^^ LOL

good to see sweet Martin, thanks.

...just seems like very few Zoners were mentioning interest in the current Zero lineup.

I'm newly boostered, worked a long day and leaving now for Cream Jr. at the Mission Theater!

Right on LLOLLO, have fun!

I love the current Zero lineup but don't feel like schlepping up to Napa for a show on a Sunday night! We're going to see Stu here in Marin Sunday night 20 minutes from home which is my desired radius these days!

I'm going to zero that night I don't do streams

Well, look who's back.

It was fun hanging with you yesterday JJ.

Hi LLTD, I've wondered if you're okay. Hope you are.

I am ok

Been seeing tons of live music

Took a break from the zone

have had  some few challenges helping a friend as a special needs trustee   Tons of work and stress

Hell of a good time in Half Moon Bay with Stu Allen, Ezra Lipp, Reed Mathis and Steven Sofranko!

In the back yard of The Cantina of the San Benito House on Main Street in downtown Half Moon Bay!

^^^ Thanks Walstib!

Sweet, 2 birthday shows!

Looks like fun.

Club Fox is a GREAT little venue.

I hope to get down there at some point!

Well I just checked my ticket alerts for Taj + Ry and that's not looking good.

May stop by GAMH late PM on the 19th to see about a ticket, but more than likely will drive down to this Club Fox place and hopefully get a ticket at the door. I'll call them tomorrow to see if that's a wise approach... not sure how large it is and how many people they usually see on those nights.

I've been trying to find taj/ry tickets for the last month to no avail.....

I've been to all five of the grateful Thursday shows some of them are damn good

Thanks LLTD!  Well, any Zoners who I run into while I'm there gets a beverage of their choice.

I grew up following Spain's tradition of treating others on my birthday, instead of the other way around....used to buy friends tickets to $10 shows in Portland, but that's no longer a thing, LOL.

(And if by some miracle I get into the TAJ show, I'll post here to advise.)

California, can't wait to see you, it's unbelievably rainy in Portland today... and for the next few ahead, looks like.

My refund posted on May 11.

MIne too.

SUMMER OF WAVY!

https://www.seva.org/site/SPageServer?pagename=WavySummer

"May 15th is Seva Co-Founder Wavy Gravy’s 86th birthday! To celebrate our favorite Clown Prince, we’re throwing him a whole summer of celebrations – that’s right! Let it be known that now and forevermore, Summer 2022 is now the Summer of Wavy Gravy – and you’re invited!

Although we had to delay Wavy’s birthday benefit concert in Berkeley (if you haven't already done so, please check your inbox for an email from UC Berkeley theatre to get a refund on your tickets), undaunted, the festivities will continue! We wanted you to know that all our Seva friends and family are hard at work planning something befitting of our favorite Clown. We can say watch this space – there will be a world-wide cyber celebration of Wavy and we hope you can join us ... but more on that later this summer."

any word on who the "friends" are for the Zero Napa show?

Not David.
