In Fresno I eat tacos. They’re fantastic and everywhere. Taco trucks on every corner, people selling them out of their garage. It’s awesome. But Fresno’s burrito game is pretty weak.
i freakin love burritos. Good place near me. Lunch like 2-3 times a week.
I like the steamed ones I first encountered in SF, the grilled ones from this food truck round here, and the ones i make. Its a regular meal at my hut.
Not all folks like them. Some older guests don't know what to make of them. "you mean i just hold it?". Can I use a fork?
mine are usually pintos/ black beans, rice, salsa fresca, shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, salsa verde, sour cream, guac. and whatever else i can.
Damn Im hungry.
Anyone remember the "burrito bus" from dead tour 88-92ish? One of their big boys and a big sammy smith sustained me for a few tours.
Yep, they were good but the egg roll guy was my goto. Egg rolls the size of your head. Full of hot oil pockets that would scorch your mouth but I still enjoyed every bite.
Got to be whole beans. I prefer a lot of avocado. Fuck crema. And french fries have no place in burritos. However, this is more of a tacos and tortas kind of town.
You know what the world needs more of? Spicy pastor cooked on a schwarma spit with pineapple. And elotes. And I like my spicy limed up mango cut into pieces and not served on a stick.
Oh yeah! the egg roll guy. Those were great too. Anyone that yelled "kind veggie burritos" usually were a fail. You sorta got to know who to avoid and who to look for. Like the peeps that rented a truck and sold french bread pizza. And this one veggie stir fry gang.
Botb - I cook my pastor, I wouldn't call it authentic, with a chopstick stuck into a pineapple core. My marinade has lots of pineapple juice and chunks in it.
Fly -- yeah, the ones that barked also had a bite,,,, a big ole diarrhea bite.
I'm with you 4winds -- no potato(unless it's the rare occasion that I eat a breakfast burrito) and certainly no rice filler. Rice and black beans on the side with hot sauce and lime.
>>>>Anyone that yelled "kind veggie burritos" usually were a fail
I don't know if this is true, but a friend of mine swears he knew a dude who would sling burritos on tour using the cheapest of ingredients, including wet dog food which he allegedly spiced up and used as filling.
Mi Burrito on Lombard in North Portland serves the best burritos in town using the freshest of ingredients and with incredibly low prices.
Speaking of Mexican food in general (its questionable if burritos are truly Mexican), my son goes to college in Las Cruces, NM, near the border with Chihuahua and could live off of burritos. But he actually looks forward to coming back to Portland for the Mexican food because apparently, most of the food he gets in Cruces is limited to either New Mexican or Chihuahuan, while Portland has cooks from all over Mexico, resulting in much greater culinary diversity.
Hot dog cart idea has been mothballed until the economy goes belly-up again. Business model has been fully researched and ready to execute at a moments notice.
>>>>>You couldn't even buy flour tortillas in mexico 30 years ago.
Its true that corn tortillas are the real staple of Mexican cuisine, but popular legend states that the original burritos were made with flour tortillas, which are more common in the northern state of Chihuahua where the burrito supposedly first appeared 40 years before they took off in California. From Wiki:
"Juan Méndez sold tacos in a street stand in the Bella Vista neighborhood of Ciudad Juárez, using a donkey as a transport for himself and the food, during the Mexican Revolution period (1910–1921). To keep the food warm, Méndez wrapped it in large homemade flour tortillas underneath a small tablecloth. As the "food of the burrito" (i.e., "food of the little donkey") grew in popularity, "burrito" was eventually adopted as the name for these large tacos." (emphasis added).
Start with organic refried beans. Add cooked organic grass fed hamburger and grilled onions. Add green tabasco sauce and chopped up serrano peppers. Add organic mexican blend grated cheese. I cook up a pot of these beans and they last me a week or so.
Mission organic uncooked flour tortillas. These are awesome! You cook them on a flat grill as you need them.
One organic pasture raised egg per burrito. Scrambled.
Dollup of home made guacamole ( Organic avocados, chopped onions, chopped serranos, meyers lemon juice, seasalt, green tabasco).
Good stuff Maynard. Wait I need to add that to another thread......
